TTC in the news

Anybody got the fleet number of that bus? I don't think it's on a 7200-series bus Arrow runs on, but 165 is an Arrow route. Still don't snap photos of operators texting or anything extra-curricular while they're at work. We don't want a repeat of what happened last year and over the past couple of days.

More TTC news:

The 1 Yonge-University-Spadina line will be closed BW from Bloor to Union for the weekend for putting in a cross-over track. As a result, all Yonge Subway trains will turn back north at Bloor-Yonge Station. All University-Spadina trains will turn back north at Union Station.

A frequent, accessible bus service will be provided between Bloor-Yonge Station and Union Station, stopping on Yonge Street at Bloor Street, Wellesley Street, College Street/Carlton Street, Dundas Street, Queen Street and King Street and on Front Street at Bay Street.

What you fail to understand is there will always be people in any job who will do that.

Why do people drink and drive when its all over the media not to do that?

What else are they going to do? The Police BYLAW have to see it with their own eyes.. Thats why when there is a motor vehicle accident, No one gets charged unless the cops show up.

I think you miss the point. The driver is responsible for following the rules of the road, and is responsible for the 50+ people on the bus as well as others on the road. That is his/her job. By texting on the job you violate everything that you stand for, by putting those people's lives in potential danger, not to mention breaking the law.

It's a professional drivers conduct that is in question here, if you cannot follow your duties then you dont deserve to have your job. It's just as bad as drinking and driving. The fact that the Unions will stand up for him and prevent disciplinary action is the reason why these individuals continue to be that way.

Think about it, if there was a real possibility of loosing your job, would you do it? Most likely not. The point is they do it because even if they did get caught the punishment is mediocre.

I bet that if it was a private coach operator they would get fired no questions asked.

The union also has a legal obligation to represent him at discipline because of the fact he pays dues.

You'd lose that bet. I know some Greyhound and Coach Canada guys down at the Toronto Coach Terminal, and they can attest that there are drivers who get caught texting, are suspended, and back to work a week later.

Apparently, the 54 Lawrence East bus the woman snapped a photo of the driver is 7459.

More photos just came up: http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandg...8/17072986.html

UPDATE: There was a pedestrian fatality at Bloor and Ossington (near the Ossington subway station) involving a TTC bus on the 63 Ossington at 1:15AM sending the 63, 94, 161 and 316 routes on a detour. Photo evidence reveals the 63 bus is numbered 1572.

Star article: Conflicting opinions on whether to snap shots of texting, and whether to talk with drivers or send info to Customer Service (which is hardly open outside business hours*):

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/929736...texting-drivers

Still no word from Brad Ross on whether TTC received a complaint through the proper channels connected to last weekend's video of a subway operator manipulating a hand held device while apparently in service, entering a station.

As for the TTC's customer service department, it is generally unresponsive -- and yet many times Kinnear has told me how it appears to take complaints 'as gospel'. But suppose you saw a serious safety violation right now? Call 416-393-3030 or talk with the employee or call 911? Depends on the situation and the moment...

Sigh. I'm not sure which route that would be -- I interacted with two 94 operators last night and noticed nothing unprofessional.

*Heard a rumour that the CS dept is being cut... no details.

Good job, everyone.

TTC eases up on cuts to bus routes

Tess Kalinowski

Transportation Reporter

The TTC is expected to announce Monday it has slashed the list of 48 routes that were to have their weekend and evening hours cut due to low ridership.

Seven routes have been thrown a lifeline, including the 98 Willowdale bus that serves the Rotary Cheshire Home for people who are blind and deaf.

That bus will continue to run weekdays until 1 a.m. and weekends until 10 p.m., The Toronto Star has learned.

In all, 72 of 212 threatened boarding periods will be saved with only about half the original service cuts going ahead.

Last week the TTC held four evenings of public consultation and met with city councillors on the transit commission on Tuesday morning to work out a revised list of service amendments.

Also handed a partial reprieve are the 120 Calvington bus. It will now run Sundays and holidays until 10 p.m. The 101 Downsview Park bus that served members of a roller derby has also been reinstated. It will now run Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Cutting the 48 routes was supposed to save the TTC $7 million, with the service supposedly reallocated to overcrowded routes in the fall.

The less dramatic cuts will likely reduce the savings to about $4 million.

Teen hit by TTC bus

A 14-year-old girl was hit by a TTC bus just before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

She was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children, where she is being treated for potentially life-threatening injuries, said an EMS official.

The girl was crossing Martin Grove Rd. when she was hit by a bus turning right onto John Garland Blvd., police said.

The intersection is still closed for the investigation.

The 46 Martin Grove and 96 Wilson routes are being diverted.

I'm sure the media will be all over this, completely missing the fact that modern buses are absolutely full of blindspots...

And will probably tie it into some sort of texting/cell phone thing too when it had nothing to do with it, front page of the Sun I'm sure..

TTC worker charged in bus passenger assault

A Toronto Transit Commission employee has been charged with assault after a bus passenger claimed he was attacked on a TTC bus.

The man was arrested Tuesday afternoon following an investigation into the Jan. 8 incident.

Isaac Gould, 40, said he was standing with his 10-year-old son at the front of the crowded bus, on Sheppard Ave. E. near Markham Rd., when the confrontation with the fellow passenger occurred.

Gould told a newspaper that the man apparently became agitated about the bus being behind schedule, making him late for work, and then yelled at other passengers to move toward the back of the vehicle.

Gould said he and his son moved back as far as they could, but the TTC employee began snapping at him and then shoved him into one of the steel poles.

The driver received a call to stop the bus at McCowan Rd., but the TTC staffer left and caught another northbound bus before police arrived.

Police confirmed that detectives from 42 Division had investigated the alleged assault. “There were a lot of witnesses,” Const. Wendy Drummond said.

The TTC also provided police with video surveillance from the bus’s on-board cameras.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross said the transit operator “takes this matter very seriously” and has disciplined the employee.

He would not elaborate because the matter is now before the courts.

Ross added that the TTC has 12,000 TTC employees and that the vast majority perform their jobs professionally.

He said TTC employees are trained in customer service and in de-escalating situations before they get out of control.

“Our expectations are that our TTC employees should always treat our customers with courtesy and respect,” Ross said. “With these allegations, that apparently did not happen.”

Frederick Tulk, 59, of Toronto, has been charged with assault.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 17.

The gent who took the one photo of the driver with a cell phone also feels that he is being treated like a snitch now, and feels discriminated against. He continues to speak out that it wasn't his intent to have the driver fired.

This video link will also kind of piggy back on vivablue5215's post with the driver charged with the Sheppard East bus incident.

A little late for sympathy now isn't it since those horses have already left the barn. As for the other angry idiot, can everyone say 'loser'?... I knew you could.

He feels like a snitch because he is a snitch, simple. Why else did he take the photo, for himself?

When will people learn that the TTC is not a schoolbus service that requires cars to stop at all sides.

[/quo

YRTs second hand classics (8300 series) had a sign up at the front warning not to cross in front of the bus after getting off, the orginal property mustve had issues with people crossing in front of the bus after getting off and getting hit
