Capstan is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Located at No. 3 Road and Capstan Way, the station is an infill station constructed in conjunction with high-density and mixed-use residential developments. The proposed name for the station in 2005 was Capstan[1] but was used interchangeably with Capstan Way.[2]

Compared to other Canada Line stations in Richmond, Capstan's design is different. Platforms are larger and have two sets of up and down escalators and two elevators, as opposed to one of each for most Canada Line stations. There is also space for a commercial retail unit, bike lockers and public art.

The station features a 3,600-square-foot piece of public art titled Breath Below by local artist Howie Tsui. The art piece is part of TransLink's Public Art Program and depicts an underwater world of the Fraser River estuary created using over 3,500 custom-made metallic-glazed glass tiles that form the side walls between the concourse and platform levels. The artwork won in the Technical Product Application category of the 2024 Hardsurface Awards.

History

Funding for the station began in 2012 when the City of Richmond made an agreement with Capstan Village developers to permit extra density in exchange for funding.[3] The original cost of the station was around $27.79 million and was expected to be raised over a 15-year schedule but was complete in May 2019 with $32 million raised.[3] The station design process began in November 2017[3] and in 2018, design work was contracted to architectural firm Perkins + Will, who also designed the Richmond stations on the Canada Line as well as various other SkyTrain stations across the network.[4]

It was expected that construction would start in 2019.[5] However, by December 2019, the station was still in the design stage and under an agreement between the city and TransLink, the station must be built and complete within 30 months of the transferring of all funds from the City of Richmond.[5] The city transferred $28 million to TransLink in late December 2019 following a $3.5 million transfer in November 2017 for design work.[6] Full station design work was complete in early summer 2021.

Construction began on September 2, 2021, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Richmond Councillors Alexa Loo and Bill McNulty, Mayor Malcolm Brodie, TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn, and TransLink's acting vice president of engineering Jeff Busby.[7] Various work resulting in the closure of a northbound lane on No. 3 Road and the east sidewalk and bike lane began on the week of October 25, 2021.

From January 10 to February 2, 2022, excluding Sundays, work began on the guideway that required single-tracking for Canada Line trains between Bridgeport and Richmond–Brighouse stations. This operational change meant service on the Brighouse branch was reduced to every 17 minutes and all outbound trains departing from Waterfront ran every four minutes to YVR–Airport. Extra bus service was provided, running from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. every 5–7 minutes on weekdays and every 5–10 minutes on Saturdays. The extra bus service ran as a direct, non-stop service between Bridgeport and Richmond–Brighouse, bypassing Aberdeen and Lansdowne to maintain direct transit service to Richmond–Brighouse. Several rounds of nightly closures were required afterwards to facilitate construction.[8] The last round of nightly closure occurred between October 15 and November 1, 2024.

The station was expected to be open in 2022. By September 2021, it was scheduled to open in spring 2023 but was deferred due to various construction-related delays. As of June 2023, the station's expected opening date was again pushed back to 2024 owing to the effects of the ongoing global shipping and logistics shortage.[9] On December 19, 2024, TransLink announced that the station would open effective noon on Friday, December 20.

During construction, three pieces of public art by Richmond-based artists were commissioned by TransLink's Public Art Program. The art was displayed around the station construction site. The artwork pieces were:

  • Transporting by Dawn Lo
  • Passages by Laura Kwok
  • Connection by Jeni Chen
