The station opened in 2002 with the launch of the [[SkyTrain Millennium Line|Millennium Line]]. There is one bus route that connects to the station which is [[Coast Mountain Bus Company route 27 'Kootenay Loop / Joyce Stn'|Route 27]]. This station is located in Vancouver, which is in Zone 1.
Located along Rupert Street between East Broadway and Grandview Highway in Vancouver, the station serves the surrounding residential areas and nearby offices.

The station was designed by Baker McGarva Hart Inc. Both Rupert and Renfrew are the only stations on the SkyTrain network to have offset platforms: they are mirrored versions of each other. Rupert has its entrance facing west while Renfrew has its entrance facing east, with the platform offset being mirrored as well.
