12 Niagara Falls-Toronto is a route operated by GO Transit that serves between Burlington GO Station and Niagara Falls VIA Station in Ontario, connected to train services from Burlington to Toronto Union Station. This is a daily service. It is part of the Lakeshore West series of GO Transit routes.
History
Route 12 was implemented during a board change period on June 30, 2008 to serve the community of Stoney Creek. It provides service for Stoney Creek citizens to reach the GO train at Burlington or to return. Prior to route restructuring, service for Stoney Creek-Burlington GO Station occurred during the whole day, generally every hour or two both directions, with more service during peak hours. Westbound trips occurred from 4:48 AM until 10:49 PM. Eastbound bus trips operated from 7:10 AM until 1:44 AM.
The Niagara Falls GO Train was launched on June 27, 2009, and added a new 12C branch to the route. This branch operated express from Union Station to Niagara Falls, stopping on demand at St. Catharines, providing a trip back to Niagara Falls from Toronto after midnight.-
With the seasonal end of train service on September 4, 2009, route 12 was adjusted to provide year-round service to Niagara Falls, while continuing to stop in St. Catharines, Stoney Creek and the new Grimsby Park & Ride lot. Although the 12C branch initially remained unchanged, it was later eliminated as passengers could take the Lakeshore West train and transfer at Burlington GO to a regular 12 trip.
Due to heavy ridership in the summer months, GO began stationing three Enviro500 double decker buses at the Niagara Falls satellite garage in June 2011, staying until the Labour Day weekend. GO also doubled up busy trips by adding a 12B branch, which operated express from Burlington GO to Niagara Falls. With enough double decker buses to cover high demand routes, route 12 now operates double decker buses at all times.
