Hamilton GO Centre is a GO Transit train and bus station in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, located at 36 Hunter Street East. It is situated on the south side of Hunter Street between James Street and John Street in downtown Hamilton.

Station description

The main entrance is from Hunter Street, where a taxi stand exists. Ticket sales for HSR is located inside, as well as a waiting area for buses and trains. The bus platforms are south of the station. GO buses enter from southbound James Street, turn left into their bay, reverse out, and exit onto northbound John Street. HSR buses serve stops along the south wall. The train station platforms are elevated on top of the station building and are parallel to Hunter Street. Four trains stay overnight at Hamilton; two on the platform and two on stub tracks east of the station.

History

Hamilton GO Centre was opened as a rail station and head office by the Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway (TH&B) railway in 1933. Passenger service to the station ended in 1981, leaving the station disused. GO's operations in the early 1990s were scattered across Hamilton, with train service along the CN Grimsby sub north of the downtown and bus service in a terminal at John Street and Rebecca Street. GO desired to centralize all its operations closer to downtown Hamilton and bought and renovated the former TH&B station, opening it on April 13, 1996.

Initially serving only GO buses and intercity coach operations, Hamilton Street Railway buses were rerouted into the terminal starting with route 51 in 2009, and shortly followed by busy routes 1, 2 and 3.

Connecting routes

The bus terminal at the station has 17 bus bays numbered 1-15 and 17-18, and 5 different zones which GO bus routes are assigned. GO buses are able to use any bay in the route's assigned zone. Four HSR routes directly serve the terminal, while connections with 19 other HSR routes and one Burlington Transit route are available from nearby streets.
