GO Transit Hawker Siddeley Canada BiLevel 208

GO Transit 2100-2155 and 200-214 are Hawker Siddeley Canada Bilevel coaches and cab cars built in 1983-1984.

The Bilevel design (as it is now known) was arrived at expressly at GO Transit's behest. In the early 1970's, GO quickly found out that the single-level cars then being used were simply not able to provide the capacity required within the track time that they were been alloted by CN. After tests with leased "Gallery-style" equipment from C&NW and later CPR, it was decided that an entirely new car style would be the best way to attack the problem.

This was the first order of Bilevel cars that include some cars equipped with cabs. The cab is situated where the washroom is located in the coaches - as a result, the number of seats was reduced by 1.

Refurbishment

The Series II Bilevels underwent refurbishment from 2002 to 2004, and received features matching those in the Series VI cars. Refurbishment was split between Bombardier in Thunder Bay and Alstom in Montréal. Features of the refurbished coaches include:

  • Repainting of the ceiling and walls to a cream colour (much like the original colour)
  • Updated seats with improved ergonomics. Seat and back were reupholstered in a blue fabric with small light blue and yellow stitches, and the new headrests which wrap around back-to-back seats was done in a light blue vinyl.
  • Cabs were expanded to the full width of the coach. Seats were rearranged, a partition and door added, and a second end window added
  • Cars refurbished by Bombardier were delivered with tables and electrical outlets; tables were removed by 2004. These features were not a part of coaches refurbished by Alstom.

On August 7, 2019, the Government of Ontario announced that Ontario Northland will be refurbishing the 15 Series II cab cars at their Remanufacturing and Repair Centre in North Bay.[1] A contract for the refurbishment of the 56 remaining Series II Bilevel cars was awarded to Ontario Northland in April 2022.[2]

The first cab car, 206, returned from refurbishment in November 2022. These cars have had their cabs reactivated. One of the first coaches to return from refurbishment was 2101 in around 2024.

Features of the refurbished coaches include:

  • Grey walls and ceilings, with end walls in light brown wood-look like the CEM cars.
  • Medium grey carpet and dark brown aisle flooring like the CEM cars.
  • Seats in current green fabric with grey vinyl headrests.
  • Electronic device charging ports and outlets.
  • Current two-tone green livery.
