Stouffville GO Station is a GO Transit train station located in Stouffville, ON. It is located on Main St. at Edward St.
Buses serve the station from stops on the street, as space around the GO station is tight since it is located within the Stouffville downtown. The main platform extends north from Main Street on the east side of the tracks. Stouffville retains a historical train station that serves in part as a ticket agent: during morning rush hours, the agent is in a booth accessible from outside the building; during all other times, passengers must purchase tickets from the Chamber of Commerce, located inside the station building.
On summer weekends, the station is also served by the York-Durham Heritage Railroad, which runs historical trains between Uxbridge and Stouffville.
History
Original service to Stouffville started in 1868 with a Toronto & Nipissing Railway line between Toronto's Union Station and Coboconk. Operations were not stable, and the railway folded numerous times into Midland, Grand Trunk and finally CN, becoming the Uxbridge Subdivision. Service was pulled back to Uxbridge in the 1950s, and service was removed from Stouffville. When CN applied to end service on the line in the 1960s, the CTC forced CN to re-extend service back to Stouffville. The line was transferred again to VIA, and in 1982 along with the Bradford Line was transferred for the last time to GO operations.
Two tracks exist at Stouffville. The east track houses the main platform, while historically the western track was used by the York-Durham Heritage Railroad. South of the station, the west track merges into the east track, while at the north end, the east track merges onto the west track. Since the removal of overnight storage at Stouffville, the west track has become unused (and unusable, as stopping position signs were put up between the rails of that track), although the rails still exist. South of Main Street, two single-crossovers existed so that YDHR trains could move the locomotive between ends. These crossovers have since been removed.
Originally, trains were stored at Stouffville Station itself. One train was located past the platform on the dead-end track, while the second would spend the night on the platform. When a 3rd train was added to the line, it was originally stored south of the station, although with the grading along that section it was quickly changed to be stored on the west track, and a special 'mini-platform' was built on the west side so the 3rd train would be able to load/unload passengers there. When additional trains were required in 2005-6, GO built a new yard further north on the line, and all trainsets now spent nights at that yard (this yard would become the future site of Lincolnville GO). Since the east track was no longer used, YDHR trains used the east track to load/unload passengers.
Starting in 2007, expansions to Stouffville Station happened. A new parking lot was built west of the tracks, as the cramped original lot on the east side could not be expanded. Even then, parking was limited, prompting the opening of Lincolnville Station (which, being located in countryside, had ample room for parking). The platform was also extended past the 5-car length it originally had (and only needed), and the now-unneeded 'mini-platform' was removed.
12 car trains began serving the Stouffville line in September 2012. As Stouffville only had a 10 car platform at the time, trains stopped across Main Street Stouffville (with the 11th and 12th cars isolated) until platform construction was complete in December.
