Barrie South GO Station is a GO Transit train station located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the east of Yonge Street north of Mapleview Drive East.
History
Rail service towards Barrie had existed for many years. VIA service operated to Barrie along the same route as today's GO service but when GO originally took over operation of the line in 1982, they cut the line back to Bradford; Barrie was left with bus service connecting to Newmarket. The line was extended northwards to Barrie in 1990 with a possible future extension to Orillia. However, due to low ridership and government budget cuts stemming from the recession in the 1990s, train service to Barrie was abandoned and cut back to Bradford in July 1993.[1]
In the early 2000s, GO sought to re-extend train service into Barrie. The first stage was a new station at the southern edge of Barrie, coupled with a new layover yard nearby. GO train service to the City of Barrie that had been absent since 1993 was restored with the opening of Barrie South GO Station on December 17, 2007.[2] Barrie South became the northern terminus of the line until January 30, 2012, when Allandale Waterfront opened, next to the historic Allandale station near the waterfront. This allowed customers a direct connection to Downtown Barrie without the need to transfer to local bus service at Barrie South GO Station.
