History
Order
This is the third batch of hybrid-electric buses delivered to the TTC, and the second Orion Next Generation order. The Commission began negotiating with Orion for an additional 140 hybrid buses in 2006. Orion offered to maintain the pricing terms for an additional 50 buses. These 190 buses were delivered concurrently with 1200-1423.
With the exception of the last five buses of the order, they were delivered with sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries for energy storage. 1685-1689 were delivered with lithium-ion batteries. Due to the poor reliability of the SLA batteries, buses 1500-1684 had the SLA batteries replaced with Lithium ion batteries by MTB and Jet (automotive technology company). This process was started in October 2009.
Modifications
These buses were delivered with bike racks, and had CCTV cameras added later. Beginning in 2009, driver barriers were being added to the fleet, and by 2010 all buses in this series were equipped. In late summer 2009, the passenger windows of this series and the other TTC NGs began receiving screws through the window latch so that the window cannot open. The TTC has not explicitly stated the reasoning for the action. It can be assumed, based on an NHTSA recall, that the extra screws are a short-term solution to address the potential of the tip-in transom falling into the bus as the screws holding it originally may loosen.[1] A more permanent solutions is being installed on the buses. This consists of two rectangular brackets installed at the bottom corner of the transom. When the brackets are installed, the window is unscrewed. Most buses started receiving this early 2010. In late October 2009, some buses received doors similar to those used on 2010-model NGs. The rear door is still the same height and the split in the panes is between the bottom window line of the high floor section and low floor section.
This series began getting the new Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system installed in August 2018. Units that had VISION installed were: 1500-1504, 1509, 1513, 1516, 1521, 1526, 1529-1534, 1536, 1541, 1547-1550, 1553, 1555, 1559-1562, 1565-1566, 1568, 1573, 1575-1577, 1579, 1586, 1588-1590, 1593, 1595-1596, 1602-1603, 1605-1607, 1611, 1614, 1618, 1625-1626, 1631, 1633, 1639, 1649-1658, 1660-1663, 1668, 1674, 1676, 1679-1680, 1688. Not all buses from this series had VISION installed as this series is being retired.
Deliveries History
These buses were delivered to Arrow, Malvern, and Wilson divisions. They were able to retire some of the 2200, 2300, 2400, 2700 and 2800-series GM New Looks, 6200-series GM/MCI Classics, the 6400 and 6500-series New Flyer D40s and the 6600 and 6700 Orion V buses.
Movement History
Most of these units were transferred to Mount Dennis upon its opening in 2008. Fleet numbers were not consistent because the lower-mileage units were sent to Mount Dennis, where the mechanics would have an easier time maintaining the buses. Until 2014, the majority of the fleet was assigned to Mount Dennis with some buses stationed at Wilson. With increasing reliability issues with this series contributing to a fleet-wide bus shortage in 2014, approximately 25 broken down Arrow Road units were exchanged with healthy units from Mount Dennis which includes some from this series.
In 2018, all non-rebuilt units from this series that were at Arrow, Mount Dennis, and Wilson divisions were transferred to Malvern. 1536 and 1633 were temporarily transferred from Mount Dennis to Malvern in early March 2019 when the Nova LFS hybrids had to be pulled from service due to a mechanical failure on February 28th, 2019. In March 2021, the remaining units at Mount Dennis moved to Malvern ahead of the opening of McNicoll division.
Deployment
This series is currently operating out of Malvern division. They may appear on routes: 38 Highland Creek, 85 Sheppard East, 86 Scarborough, 95 York Mills, 102 Markham Rd, 116 Morningside, 122 Graydon Hall, 130 Middlefield, 131 Nugget, 132 Milner, 133 Neilson, 134 Progress, 169 Huntingwood, 185 Sheppard Central, 200 Toronto Zoo, 300 Bloor-Danforth, 302 Kingston Rd-McCowan, 385 Sheppard East, 395 York Mills, 902 Markham Rd Express, 904 Sheppard-Kennedy Express, 905 Eglinton East Express, 938 Highland Creek Express, 985 Sheppard East Express, 986 Scarborough Express, and 995 York Mills Express.
Retirement
The TTC originally planned for these buses to have an 18-year lifespan, however they began facing challenges as the buses approached their mid-life. More frequent failure of components, particularly in the buses' propulsion system, meant an escalating cost of ownership.[2] Beginning in 2018, as the TTC started taking delivery of new buses from Nova Bus, they started to retire buses from this series. Typically, when a major component such as the engine or traction motor fails and is deemed uneconomical to repair, the bus is retired.
