Toronto Transit Commission 1000-1149

Toronto Transit Commission 1000-1149 are Orion 07.501 HEV buses built and delivered in 2006. These were the first hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) ordered by the TTC, and the only "Old Generation" (OG) hybrids ordered by the TTC. Three subsequent HEV orders, all of the newer "Next Generation" series, were placed between 2007 and 2009; but as a consequence of overall reliability concerns, the TTC did not order further hybrid buses until 2018.

History

Order

The decision to purchase hybrid buses was based on the deployment of hybrids in New York City. The TTC also received funding from the Federal Government for the purchase of environmentally friendly buses. The TTC had previously had Orion VII hybrid demonstrator 1043 on-hand for testing in 2001 to 2002, and had purchased Orion VII diesel buses in previous years. In May 2005, a contract (C32PY04839) for 150 diesel-electric hybrid buses (numbered 1000 to 1149) and 180 clean diesel buses (7900 to 7979 and 8000 to 8099) was awarded to DaimlerChrysler Commercial Buses North America (Orion). Deliveries of the hybrid buses took place throughout most of 2006.

An option for an additional 220 buses (either hybrids or diesels) could be exercised. The option was taken and these units became 1200 to 1419.

Modifications

Due to reliability problems with the sealed lead acid (SLA) energy storage batteries delivered with the buses, they had their batteries replaced with Lithium-ion batteries by MTB starting in late 2008. Bus 1062 was chosen as the prototype for conversion, and originally had a square battery housing designed in-house. This was later swapped for the standard rounded cover used by Orion.

Bike racks and CCTV cameras were fitted a few years after delivery. Driver barriers were also added between 2009 and 2010. Throughout 2015, the seats immediately behind the front wheels, including those in the wheelchair space, received blue inserts as part of a fleet-wide modification to better denote courtesy seating.

In the summer of 2016, 1006 was selected as a prototype bus to be equipped with the new Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system. This bus was removed from service until the summer of 2018, when buses equipped with the VISION system started to be deployed in passenger service. The rest of the series was equipped with the VISION system by November 2018.

In May 2021, Wi-Fi service was introduced to route 35 Jane, and in June 2021, to route 102 Markham Rd. With this change, some units from this series from Mount Dennis Division became Wi-Fi enabled for route 35 Jane, and some Malvern Division units from the 3400 to 3654 series became Wi-Fi enabled for route 102 Markham Rd. These units were identified by Wi-Fi logos placed beside the rear and side fleet numbers. In the interior of the bus, decals were installed on the windows stating that the bus was Wi-Fi enabled. The first buses to be Wi-Fi enabled were 1000-1059 in May 2021. These units were ostensibly meant to be restricted to use on the 35, but could appear on other routes in the event of equipment shortages. Conversely, non-WiFi buses were also occasionally found on these routes. Between December 2021 and January 2024, any and all remaining active units were equipped with Wi-Fi to compensate for decommissioned units.

In early March 2025, the TTC disabled the Wi-Fi and removed all decals from the remaining active units.

Rebuild

In the first quarter of 2015, the TTC began the midlife rebuild of these buses. The first bus was outshopped in April 2015. By November other buses in this series entered the rebuild program, and the final buses were completed in August 2016. The rebuilt buses received body and structural repairs as well as an overhaul of some systems and components. They were given new flooring and a fresh coat of paint. Because of budget constraints, overhaul and replacement of the generator, traction motor, propulsion control, and high voltage cabling was postponed to 2017. It was decided in February 2019 that all of the buses in this series would go back for minor body work and a repaint into the new LFLRV livery. 1071 was the first bus to receive the new paint scheme in February 2019 and 1147 was the last in January 2020.

Deliveries History

All 150 buses were delivered to Arrow Rd Division, allowing them to replace the retiring GM New Look buses (including the 2600 series ex-Montreal units) and some of the 6000 and 6100 series Flyer D901 buses.

Movement History

With the arrival of more NG hybrids at Arrow, this series was split upon the opening of Mount Dennis Division, with 50 units each going to Arrow Rd (1000 to 1049), Wilson (1050 to 1099) and Malvern (1100 to 1149). Wilson split up their 50 units in May 2010, with the lower 25 going to Mount Dennis, and the upper 25 going to Malvern. Arrow sent their remaining 50 units to Mount Dennis in August 2010, making it an even 75/75 split between Mount Dennis and Malvern. In February 2011, 1075 to 1079 were moved to Mount Dennis to compensate for a bus shortage and were returned in 2012. Buses 1063 to 1074 were transferred to Malvern in summer 2013 to replace retiring 7000-series Orion V buses. Just before the 2015 Pan Am Games, 1063 to 1067 and 1071 to 1076 were transferred back to Mount Dennis. In 2018, the remaining units at Malvern were transferred to Mount Dennis in exchange for most of Mount Dennis's 1500 and 1600-series NG hybrid buses.

Deployment

When these buses were delivered new to the TTC, they operated out of Arrow Rd. Division on routes 35 Jane, 36 Finch West, 37 Islington, 41 Keele, 45 Kipling, 46 Martin Grove, 60 Steeles West, 77 Swansea, 79 Scarlett Rd, 84 Sheppard West, 96 Wilson, 99 Arrow Rd, 101 Downsview Park, 106 York University, 108 Downsview, 110 Islington South, 120 Calvington, 165 Weston Rd North, 191 Highway 27 Rocket, 308 Finch East, 309 Finch West, 311 Islington, 312 St Clair, 319 Wilson, and 512 St Clair. By 2008, this series was restricted from use on route 191 Highway 27 Rocket (now known as 927 Highway 27 Express), due to mechanical/propulsion issues these buses faced at highway speeds.

Currently, this series is operating out of Mount Dennis Division and can appear on the following routes: 14 Glencairn, 28 Bayview South,29 Dufferin, 32 Eglinton West, 35 Jane, 41 Keele, 45 Kipling, 71 Runnymede, 77 Swansea, 79 Scarlett Rd, 161 Rogers Rd, 168 Symington, 171 Mt Dennis, 300 Bloor-Danforth, 310 Spadina, 320 Yonge, 329 Dufferin, 332 Eglinton West, 335 Jane, 341 Keele, 510 Spadina, 929 Dufferin Express, 935 Jane Express. 941 Keele Express, and 945 Kipling Express.

Retirements

As the age of these vehicles began to approach the 18-year mark, retirements of this series began in March 2023 when the TTC acquired 134 Xcelsior hybrid buses.
