Toronto Transit Commission 6440-6521 were New Flyer D40 buses built and delivered in 1989. They are referred to mainly as D40-89s to distinguish them between the 3 other D40 orders (1987, 1988, 1990).

History
Order
These buses were delivered with the 1980s so-called "CLRV" paint scheme with the grey lower portion and higher red mid stripe and linen rollsigns, which were in use with most of the fleet. The TTC retrofitted the buses with Luminator Matrix:MAX signs. Unlike the previous order, they were delivered with large black window frames along with the third stop lamp mounted inside the bus at the bottom of the rear window. Inside the buses, they had the standard cream and brown colour scheme and the seating is configured for 39 passengers using the Otaco Model 6468 passenger seats that has padded brown vinyl seat inserts. Additional features that came were the tilt and telescopic steering wheel.
Unit 6440 briefly demonstrated for OC Transpo in 1989, sporting temporary OC Transpo lettering.
Modifications
The last two buses, 6520 and 6521 were fitted with solid panel Stone Bennett dual slide glide entrance and rear doors rather than the four flip out doors that were standard on most high floor buses in the fleet, presumably as a test by the Commission. They were later converted to the dual flip-out doors.
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, this series received their 12 year overhaul. 6510 and 6514 were the first buses to be rebuilt. They received the circular LED lamps that are brighter, turn signals, and brake lights. The padded seats were replaced with unpadded red fabric inserts from Holdsworth. They were also given a fresh coat of paint into the TTC's current livery.
Some of the buses received the automated announcement systems due to the fleet retiring.
Delivery and Movement History
These buses were delivered to various garages. By then, the allocations were as follows:
- 6440-6449 at Malvern
- 6450-6459 at Danforth
- 6460-6471 at Birchmount
- 6472-6481 at Eglinton
- 6482-6491 at Davenport
- 6492-6501 at Lansdowne
- 6502-6511 at Queensway
- 6512-6519 at Wilson
- 6520-6521 at Davenport
In the mid-late 1990s, they were transferred to Wilson Division. By 2000, they were consolidated to Queensway Division where they spent most of their lives ever since. These buses replaced the retiring 82xx and 84xx series Flyers.
Deployment
Throughout their later lives, these buses were found on routes 15 Evans, 26 Dupont, 30 Lambton, 32 Eglinton West, 37 Islingon, 40 Junction, 44 Kipling South, 45 Kipling, 48 Rathburn, 49 Bloor West, 50 Burnhamthorpe, 52 Lawrence West, 55 Warren Park, 66 Prince Edward, 71 Runnymede, 73 Royal York, 76 Royal York South, 77 Swansea, 80 Queensway, 89 Weston, 110 Islington South, 111 East Mall, 112 West Mall, 123 Shorncliffe, 168 Symington and 300 Bloor-Danforth.
Retirement
They were gradually retired with the 6420-6434 series between 2007-2009. The last active bus in the series, 6457, was retired when its MTO inspection expired at the end of March 2009.
