The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or WMATA, operates transit service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which also includes parts of Maryland and Virginia.
History
WMATA was formed in 1967 to plan, develop, and operate public transportation in the Washington, DC, metro area. It began bus operations in 1973.
