Toronto Transit Commission 2000-2110, 2150-2155, 2240-2485, 2600-2619, 2700-2765, 2767-2858 are General Motors T6H-5307N New Look (or "Fishbowl") buses built and delivered between 1977 and 1983. The series is comprised of various batches of buses which have been rebuilt, including a number of buses purchased from Montreal.
History
In the 1990s, the TTC was experiencing increased ridership. In addition, the TTC had not received any new buses since the beginning of the decade. They created the Bus Heavy Rebuild Program in 1995 as a solution to renewing their bus fleet. The TTC settled on rebuilding buses at the 6-year and 12-year mark. Two years later, the TTC expanded the rebuild program to include buses that had reached the end of their 18-year life. Some of these buses were past that mark and were taken out of retirement. The majority of the buses came from batches numbered in the 8000 series. Other buses came second-hand from the Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM). Sixty-four GM New Look buses were acquired from the STCUM in 1998, however only 20 buses were ultimately rebuilt. A total of 535 GM New Looks were rebuilt between 1997 and 2004. They were renumbered in the 2000-series, which cleared out the 8000-series for future buses, starting with the 8000 series Orion VIIs in 2007.
In late 2008, the TTC announced that 52 of the remaining GM New Look buses would undergo a second life extension to compensate for service expansion and issues with the hybrid buses. Select buses in the 22/23/2400 and a few 27/2800 series were refurbished (mostly body repairs including a new paint job and mechanical work). The 52 units that completed the Life Extension Program (LEP) are 2246, 2251, 2252, 2255, 2265, 2266, 2268, 2271, 2280, 2281,2284, 2286, 2290, 2291, 2294, 2296, 2299, 2301, 2302, 2316, 2326, 2340, 2345, 2355, 2357, 2360, 2365, 2374, 2375, 2392, 2402, 2408, 2413, 2414, 2418, 2426, 2428, 2434, 2439, 2441, 2444, 2455, 2456, 2459, 2467, 2468, 2470, 2472, 2482, 2755, 2822, and 2855. The date each unit completed this program is indicated in the respective notes section below. In 2010, approximately 20 LEP Fishbowls went through LEP Phase 2 which involved various structural work.
As their numbers dwindled due to retirement, the buses remaining in active service were generally 2200-2400 series units, which were rebuilt later than the others, with a few 27/2800 units remaining as well. The last route that regularly ran these buses was the 52 Lawrence West, which was the last remaining non wheelchair accessible route. Very rarely, GMs could be found on other routes out of Mount Dennis division. Prior to their relegation to the route 52 on July 31, 2011, the buses could be found on the 59 Maple Leaf as well, and prior to June 19, 2011, the 71 Runnymede, 77 Swansea, and 90 Vaughan.
By December 2011, there were eight buses in active service and 24 more in storage that never returned to service. The official final day of the Fishbowls in service was December 16, 2011. The remaining five buses (2281, 2286, 2290, 2444 and 2855) provided their last day of service on the 52 Lawrence West and were in service all day. Bus number 2281 was the last fishbowl left in service, moving to the Yonge Subway shuttle service from midnight until 2:15XM. Bus number 2252 remained in use on the Toronto Island Shuttle, but not in active passenger service, until April 2012.
The buses were originally supposed to be phased out at the end of 2012. However, due to complaints of these buses not being accessible and MTO emissions regulations, they were all phased out a year earlier than expected.
In a surprise move after retirement, the TTC and The Shuffle Demons band got together for a promotional gig of their new album. This involved retired fishbowl 2252 making a trip up and down Spadina Avenue on the 510 (as the Spadina streetcars were not running because of track repairs) on July 5, 2012. The Shuffle Demons were onboard, and performed their 1980's hit "Spadina Bus", the music video which was shot along Spadina Avenue and included footage of TTC fishbowls operating on the 77 Spadina route. This was a fitting end to the fishbowl legacy in Toronto.
Preservation
At the August 2010 Commission meeting, the issue of preserving two 2000-series GM buses was raised.[1] The restoration and maintenance would be included in the 2012 operating budget. In 2012, 2345 and 2444 were set aside as possible candidates for preservation. They were later joined by 2252 after its term on the Toronto Islands. In December 2015, 8058 was acquired back from the Halton County Radial Railway museum and set aside for preservation. The TTC plans to use 2345 for parts and restore 2252 and 2444. Bus 8058 may be restored as well or have its salvageable components put into one of the other buses. The bus had severely deteriorated after its donation to the museum.
Work began on the restoration of 2252 in 2016. By the end of September of that year, much of the bodywork was complete and was being readied for painting.
Two more buses, 2290 and 2291, in operational condition, were donated to the Transport Enthusiasts Club (TEC) who are involved in bus preservation in Ireland. The first unit was spotted in December 2013 at the Liverpool docks overseas, on its way to its new owners.

2000-2110
This series of buses is composed of GM New Looks built from 1977 to 1981. Select buses came from the following batches: 8160-8204, 8270-8314, 8320-8369, 8520-8561 and 8570-8729. Reaching the end or past their 18-year lifespan, they were rebuilt from 1997 to 2000 and renumbered per the order of rebuilding. Some carried their old number after rebuild because they were done before the decision was made to renumber the buses.
The buses received a full mechanical and structural overhaul. They also received a number of other features. The driver's area was enlarged, which took up one passenger seat, and a blacked-out effect acrylic divider was installed in order to accommodate the new, larger driver's seat. The steering wheel was also replaced with a more modern one and power steering was added to assist drivers. Passenger seats had their padded brown vinyl inserts replaced with red fabric ones. Buses from the 8320-8369 series retained their padding. The buses received a fresh coat of paint giving the buses the TTC's current livery.

2150-2155
2150-2155 were formerly units 8157, 8073, 8164, 8163, 8166, 8169 built between 1975 and 1977. They received their body and mechanical rebuild around 1997 to 2000 at the same time and were renumbered as per the order of rebuilding. This rebuild program was intended to produce more units, but it was cut back to the six units listed.
In addition to receiving a full mechanical and structural overhaul, the buses received a number of other features. 8073's rollsign was replaced with Luminator flip-dot destination signs. The driver's area was enlarged, which took up one passenger seat, and a blacked-out effect acrylic divider was installed to accommodate the newer larger driver's seat. The steering wheel was also replaced with a more modern one and power steering was added to assist drivers in turning. Passenger bench seats had their black vinyl with rose vinyl trim upholstery replaced with brown vinyl. The buses received a fresh coat of paint giving the buses the TTC's current livery. They retained their unique seating layout with more forward facing seats in the rear section.
2240-2485
2240-2485 were formerly units 8740-8985 built from 1982 to 1983. They received their 12 year rebuild in the mid to late 1990s and their 18 year rebuilds between 2000 and 2004. After their 18 year rebuild, these buses were renumbered. Their original number is their current number subtracted by 6500, as they were all numbered in sequence. There is no bus numbered 2321 as unit 8821 was sold for scrap after an accident before its rebuild.
As part of their their 12 year rebuild, the buses received a number of other features. The driver's area was enlarged, which took up one passenger seat, and a blacked-out effect acrylic divider was installed to accommodate the new driver's seat. The steering wheel was also replaced with a more modern one and power steering was added to assist drivers in turning. Passenger seats had their padded brown vinyl inserts replaced with unpadded red fabric ones. These buses received LED marker lights, turn signals, and brake lights. They received body work and were given a fresh coat of paint giving the buses the TTC's current livery. The 18 year rebuild gave the buses a full mechanical and structural overhaul, with a new coat of paint.

2600-2619
2600-2619 were originally built new between 1979 and 1982 for the Commission de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (CTCUM). In 1998, the TTC intended to purchase 100 approximately 18-year old New Looks from the Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM, successor of the CTCUM) of Montréal, who had excess buses at the time. A large number of these second hand "graveyard" buses were planned to be rebuilt, but because of the costs and difficulty of rebuilding them (especially the older units) only 20 were rebuilt, and ultimately only 64 ex-STCUM New Looks were acquired by the TTC in total (some parts from the unused buses acquired did make it onto other TTC units). The younger retirees from the 23-, 24- and 25-series were mostly used in the program, with TTC 2600 and 2601 being rebuilt from older 22- and 21-series units (respectively) early on to test the feasibility of rebuilding older units. They were also intended to be acquired as replacements for the Flyer D800Bs and the 1987 New Flyer D40s due to frame corrosion that did not last 18 years.
During their rebuilding at Hillcrest, the buses received some new features. The rollsigns were replaced with Luminator flip-dot destination signs. The driver's area was enlarged, which took up one passenger seat, and a blacked-out effect acrylic divider was installed to accommodate the new driver's seat. The steering wheel was also replaced with a more modern one and power steering was added to assist drivers in turning. The interior colour scheme of light blue from Montreal was changed to the TTC's cream and brown. The light blue walls were painted light cream and the interior of the doors and dash area were painted brown. The light blue vinyl seats were reupholstered in brown vinyl.
These buses had McKay gate operated rear doors which required the gate to be pushed open to open the doors as one exited the bus. This was designed as a one way exit as STCUM passengers do not board through the rear doors. Most TTC routes however have boarding through rear doors in fare-paid areas, so one would have to pull the gate towards them before boarding through the rear doors. Because the McKay gates hindered rear door boarding, these buses were primarily restricted to service on the 35 Jane (one of only a few TTC routes to not enter a fare-paid area). After the 35 became accessible, the buses were restricted to the 41 Keele, then the 96 Wilson until their retirement.
The 64 known ex-STCUM units acquired by the TTC: STCUM 21-041*, 063, 081, 112, 22-009*, 014, 015, 028, 029, 033, 034, 042, 068, 089, 116, 127, 132, 141, 145, 150, 23-007, 008, 009, 028, 029, 030, 033, 036, 041, 063, 072, 081, 082, 089, 090, 095, 105, 108, 115, 117, 122, 124*, 128, 129*, 130, 133*, 140, 146, 147*, 24-010*, 018*, 019*, 020, 023*, 042*, 043*, 046*, 072*, 084*, 106*, 113*, 25-005*, 024*, 069* (* = denotes a unit rebuilt by the TTC to a 2600, as listed below). The unrebuilt units were stored (initially arriving at Hillcrest, later being stored offsite at a lot near VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre in Mimico) until rebuilt or disposed of.

2700-2765, 2767-2858
2700-2765, 2767-2858 were originally built from 1981 to 1982. 2700-2720, 2759-2789(odd numbers only), 2790-2806, 2808-2818 and 2820-2858 received 18 year body and mechanical rebuilds independently of each other, while 2721-2757, 2768-2788 (even numbers only), 2807 and 2819 received the 18 year body and mechanical rebuild at the same time. The rebuilding program took place between 1999 and 2001, and units were renumbered as per the order of rebuilding (not being renumbered in original sequence). There is no vehicle numbered 2766 as that number is taken by the historic Peter Witt 2766.
In addition to receiving a full mechanical and structural overhaul, the buses received a number of other features. The driver's area was enlarged, which took up one passenger seat, and a blacked-out effect acrylic divider was installed to accommodate the new driver's seat. The steering wheel was also replaced with a more modern one and power steering was added to assist drivers in turning. Passenger seats had their padded brown vinyl inserts replaced with unpadded red fabric ones. These buses received LED marker lights, turn signals, and brake lights. Body rebuilds gave the buses a fresh coat of paint giving the buses the TTC's current livery. 2700-2765 and 2767-2834 were given the UWE systems for outdoor storage.
