History
Order
The Commission awarded a contract for 330 buses, made up of 150 diesel-electric hybrid and 180 clean diesel buses to Orion in early 2005. Due to the unplanned retirement of a number of older buses, the TTC needed buses before the planned delivery date. Orion was able to deliver these 80 buses ahead of schedule.[1]
Features and Modifications
These buses are virtually identical to the 2005 order except they do not have any UWE connectors on the front of the bus. They were the first Orion VII buses in the fleet to use the Cummins engine and were to be equipped with diesel particulate filters. However because they ended up being delivered before ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) became mandatory, they feature diesel oxidation catalysts instead. It is a requirement that ULSD be used with the particulate filter.[1]
Many units entered service with bike racks already installed, recycled from retired CNG Orion VI buses. All buses had auto announcements and CCTV cameras installed, along with driver barriers in 2009.
This series started getting the new Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system installed in mid-January 2019. By July 2019, 25 units (7955-7979) had VISION installed. The rest of the fleet received VISION at Malvern Division in November 2019. The kits they received were the ones salvaged from the retiring 1500, 1600, and 1700 unrefurbished Orion hybrids. The entire series was equipped with VISION by February 2020 with the exception of units 7900-7908, 7911, 7929, 7936, 7939. Buses that didn't have VISION installed by May 2019 (7906, 7908-7910, 7912-7928, 7930-7935, 7937-7938, 7940-7956) were given TETRA radios for use on streetcar shuttles.
All units have been retrofitted with LED headlights.
Fleet numbers were reused from the retired 1974 GM New Look buses, and partially reused from the retired 1974-75 Flyer D800A buses.
Deliveries History
All 80 buses (7900-7979) were delivered to Wilson division, allowing them to replace some of the 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2600, 2700 and 2800 series GM New Looks, 6000 and 6100 series Flyer D901s, 6200 series GM/MCI Classics and the remaining 9200 series Orion VI CNG buses.
Movement History
Buses 7900-7904, 7906-7907, 7909-7911 moved to Eglinton in October 2008. Arrow Road received 7900-7924 so that diesel buses could be used on route 191. Wilson retained 7925-7979 until 2010 when Queensway received 7970-7979 and later traded 7925-7969 for the 1300 and 1400 series Orion hybrids. Birchmount received 7900-7919 in August 2010, and borrowed 7939, 7945, 7953, 7960, 7965 from Arrow. They returned to Arrow Road in early 2011 when Birchmount received the 8100 series Orion buses from Wilson. Other units were transferred between Arrow and Queensway during late 2015 and 2016 to replace retiring D40LF units at Queensway and as units completed their rebuild. In 2018, the remaining Arrow units were transferred to Queensway. In late April 2019, 7937-7938, 7940-7956 were transferred to Birchmount in exchange for a few 8400 series LFS buses. From May to June 2019, 7937-7938, 7940-7956 were transferred back to Queensway.
Deployment
When these buses were new, this series operated out of Wilson division on various routes such as 7 Bathurst, 14 Glencairn, 29 Dufferin, 32 Eglinton West, 47 Lansdowne, 52 Lawrence West, 60 Steeles West, 63 Ossington, 98 Willowdale-Senlac, 105 Dufferin North, 161 Rogers Rd, and 196 York University Rocket. In the middle of their lives, they were assigned to various routes operating out of Arrow Road, Birchmount, Eglinton and Queensway divisions.
Near the end of their lives, these units were confined to Queensway division and last operated on 15 Evans, 26 Dupont, 30 High Park North, 37 Islington, 40 Junction-Dundas West, 44 Kipling South, 45 Kipling, 46 Martin Grove, 48 Rathburn, 49 Bloor West, 50 Burnhamthorpe, 55 Warren Park, 66 Prince Edward, 73 Royal York, 76 Royal York South, 77 Swansea, 80 Queensway, 110 Islington South, 111 East Mall, 112 West Mall, 123 Sherway, 127 Davenport, 145 Downtown/Humber Bay Express, 168 Symington, 176 Mimico GO, 189 Stockyards, 203 High Park, 300 Bloor-Danforth, 315 Evans-Browns Line, 337 Islington, 900 Airport Express, 937 Islington Express, 944 Kipling South Express, and 945 Kipling Express.
Retirements and Repurpose
In August 2018, 7900-7905 were removed from revenue service and converted into Events Support buses for the Toronto Police Service. These buses are used for moving officers during large events, and utilized as roadblocks during street closures. At first, the buses were given an all-over dark metallic grey livery (matching the police cruisers). At the start of November 2018, the buses were repainted in a greyscale LFLRV livery and given decals, making them more visible.
In June 2019, two of the Events Support buses (ES-1 and ES-4) were vandalized during the Toronto Raptors NBA Championship celebration and were written-off. In October 2019, 7906 and 7908 were removed from revenue service and converted into Events Support buses to replace ES-1 and ES-4.
In January 2021, 7937 and 7950 were converted to Event Support buses, but unlike the ES-x units these units were still equipped with revenue service equipment (bike rack, Presto readers, fare box pedestal, VISION, operator door/shield, the next stop screen, run box and CCTV cameras).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, 7955-7958 were converted to Vaccination Buses while 7953 and 7961 were converted to COVID-19 Positive Transport Units. Both the COVID-19 buses were withdrawn in December 2022 while 7937 and 7950 were withdrawn in 2023.
The first bus of the series, 7929, was retired in February 2019. Following the delivery of the new 7000 series Nova Bus LFS HEV buses and with most of the buses having reached their 18 year lifespan, the remaining buses were retired beginning in June 2023 lasting into February 2024. The final active unit of the series, 7941, was retired on March 4, 2024 after operating on route 40 Junction-Dundas West. 7913 and 7952 were retained as Toronto Island Shuttle Buses from January 2024.
