History

Order

These buses are part of a contract for 330 buses, made up of 150 diesel-electric hybrid and 180 clean diesel buses, that was awarded to Orion in early 2005. This is the final batch of first generation Orion VII buses for the TTC.

Features and Modifications

The fleet was outfitted with automated announcements in late 2007 to early 2008, bike racks in early 2008, CCTV cameras in late 2008, and driver barriers in late 2009.

Concerns over unrestrained luggage on buses while traveling the highway portion of route 192 Airport Rocket prompted the TTC to install luggage racks on 8000-8011 in January 2013. The two-tier racks were located across from the rear door, and replaced three rows of seats. The Airport buses also received a unique livery following their mid-life refurbishment in 2015 to better promote the service. It consisted of an off white base with assorted passport stamps. On the right side of the bus there was a slogan, "Your journey starts here". The upper five-sixths of the front were painted black. At the rear on the engine door and right side bottom corner of the bus there was a stamp that said "Downtown to Airport in 45 minutes, One TTC fare". There was also a route number sticker and TTC logo on the engine door beside this stamp.

In Summer 2016, 8026 was selected as one of the prototype buses to be equipped with the new Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system. This bus was removed from service until Summer 2018, when the VISION system started to be deployed system-wide. The rest of this series was equipped with VISION by January 2019.

In April 2019, buses in this series began being retrofitted with LED headlights. All units were eventually equipped with LED headlights.

Fleet numbers were reused from the retired 1974-75 Flyer D800A and the 1975 GM New Look buses.

Refurbishments

Beginning near the end of 2014, this series of buses began their mid-life rebuild. They received a mechanical and structural overhaul. Inside, the buses received new flooring and seat inserts as needed. The original rear doors were replaced with more robust doors. Rebuilt buses are best identified by their fresh coat of paint.

Deliveries History

All 100 buses (8000-8099) were delivered to Wilson Division, which allowed for the retirement of much of the 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2700 and 2800-series GM New Looks, as well as some of the 6000 and 6100-series Flyer D901s and the 6200-series GM/MCI Classics.

Movement History

These buses were transferred to Queensway between October 2007 and Summer 2008, originally to relieve the New Flyer D40LF fleet (which were starting to undergo rebuild), and then to retire D40s and 1991 Orion Vs. They were replaced at Wilson with the new 1400-1500 Orion VII NG hybrids. As 8026 was one of the VISION test buses, it was transferred to Wilson in 2018 until Queensway had VISION installed on their vehicles.

Deployment

When these buses were new, this series operated out of Wilson division and ran on various routes such as 7 Bathurst, 14 Glencairn, 29 Dufferin, 32 Eglinton West, 47 Lansdowne, 52 Lawrence West, 60 Steeles West, 63 Ossington, 98 Willowdale-Senlac, 105 Dufferin North, 161 Rogers Rd, and 196 York University Rocket.

After this series migrated to Queensway division, these buses ran mostly on routes 15 Evans, 26 Dupont, 30 High Park North, 32 Eglinton West, 37 Islington, 40 Junction-Dundas West, 44 Kipling South, 45 Kipling, 46 Martin Grove, 48 Rathburn, 49 Bloor West, 50 Burnhamthorpe, 52 Lawrence West, 55 Warren Park, 66 Prince Edward, 73 Royal York, 76 Royal York South, 77 Swansea, 80 Queensway, 110 Islington South, 111 East Mall, 112 West Mall, 123 Sherway, 127 Davenport, 145 Downtown/Humber Bay Express, 168 Symington, 176 Mimico GO, 189 Stockyards, 203 High Park, 300 Bloor-Danforth, 315 Evans-Browns Line, 337 Islington, 900 Airport Express, 937 Islington Express, 944 Kipling South Express, and 945 Kipling Express.

Retirements and Repurpose

The first two units (8058 and 8095) were officially retired in July 2020 due to collision damage. The Airport Express units (8000-8011) were initially withdrawn in late December 2022 and early January 2023, following 3330-3341 being equipped with luggage racks; however, due to frequent breakdowns, units 8008 and 8010 returned to service later that month. At the end of January 2023, 8008 and 8010 were once again withdrawn from revenue service. In early March 2023, 8007 and 8008 returned to service. In late April 2023, 8009 and 8011 briefly returned to service along side 8008. With the 8100s that moved to Queensway in May 2023, this allowed for the remaining Airport buses to officially be withdrawn from service. As more 8100s transfer over to Queensway, any units that experience a major mechanical failure that are deemed uneconomical to repair along with expiring MTO renewals were retired. The last of these buses were retired from revenue service in July 27, 2024.

Between March and June 2023, former Airport Express buses 8005, 8006, 8008-8011 were reassigned as Shelter Buses. Unit 8010 was the first to begin conversion and was the Shelter Bus prototype. Through May and June 2023, the rest buses were sent to to Hillcrest to begin their conversion. Units 8012 and 8013 were also sent to Hillcrest to become Shelter Buses.

Preservation

At the TTC board meeting on December 20, 2023, the Commission has recommended a preservation of an Orion bus, one of the last group of transit buses manufactured in Ontario. The TTC staff contacted Halton County Radial Railway to determine their interest in obtaining one Orion bus. However, the museum declined its interest to focus on rail vehicles and the TTC has selected 8079 and 8091 to be retained for preservation as part of its historical fleet.
