Horror on a Greyhound bus!

Recommended Posts

170 was involved in the incident where two guys got on, argued, got kicked off, then one stabbed the other right outside the back doors.

Thanks. I remember now. The stabbing was not actually IN the bus.

Wow that is terrible. This is why I have an overall negative view on any religion. But without religion or politics, the world wouldn't go round.

Without politics, we'd still have our trolleys <_<

And without them, you guys might also have a Streetcar System, and we might have both Trolley's and Streetcars running round... actually without politics there'd still be alot of things running round and some things would never even have happened...

Yeah. When I first heard about this, I thought that they should have been branded traitors instead of the Dixie Chicks after one of them said she was ashamed that they were from the same state as him. I hope someone smacks some sense into these losers.

On a different point, I'm sure many more people are ashamed that they are from the same country/time zone/continent/planet as George W. Bush.

So now this guy has to keep bringing this crap to Canada? It was bad enough they did this at funerals where citizens who serve there county were being mourned in the US, in fact it was outrageous. Incredibly misguided people. You should hear the stuff Phelps has his kids saying.

PETA is nothing more than a bunch of lunatic extremists.

After a suicide bombing involving a donkey laden with explosives, they actually sent off a letter asking that the next suicide bombing only use people, leaving the animals out of the conflict.

The real crime is that lunatics like PETA make people who have legitimate concerns about animal rights lose credibility.

you know, ive never been a fan of PETA and this just takes the cake, how dare they compare one of the most gruesomist murder that this country has ever seen, to the slaughter of animals!?

ah but we do my friend, what do you think the LRT system is, just a modern streetcar, of course it took them 26 years to figure out we needed to start a new system after they scrapped the last one, so it's not like there is no precident eh?

So following the same pattern, we will have to wait 26 years for them to figure out we need modern trolleys after scrapping the BBC's? I wonder what the trolleys will look like in 26 years?

Like this only better

I read in the Toronto Star that these misguided religious people never showed up at the funeral, though there were anti protesters there just in case. Not sure what happened to them though.

There were no protestors. The funeral was peaceful. Heavy police presense including traffic control. I think those religious idiots knew they were going to get a VERY rough reception if they dared show up. The mood on the street was that NOBODY was going to tolerate it. It would have been much more than sh-tface looks and I think the fanatics were wise to stay away.

phelps and his entourage were barred entry at the border.

what he was planning to do would constitute a hate crime up here. plus they were likely trying to head off the inevitable riot for everyone's safety (although it'd make my day to see him lynched.)

i'm reasonably sure he has "persona non grata" status with canada customs, and will be forced to do a 180 every time he attempts to cross.

Family of beheaded man to sue RCMP, Greyhound

Something like this could have happened anywhere, I'd personally rather it had happened on that bus than out in public somewhere. At least on the bus he can be held quite easily (lock the door, disable the engine like the driver did) until police arrive whereas in public he could of run rampad and possibly end up causing more damage and harm to more people(sp?)... Then who would the family blame? Just my opinion anyways...

What a stupid family. Sue the government because it wasn't a safe environment? Sue Greyhound? As YRT-Guy said, this incident could have happened absolutely anywhere, and there should be no accountability held against Greyhound for this incident, just because it happened on a Greyhound bus. If this just happened to happen outside a Wal-Mart, would they go sue Wal-Mart because it was their property, and the government for not having better building regulations for safety? Give me a break.

I would rather see increased security on a VIA train than a bus.

Suspect charged with bus beheading to go on trial in 2009

WINNIPEG , The Canadian Press

Vince Li, the accused in the Greyhound bus beheading of Tim McLean last Wednesday night, appears in a Portage La Prairie court Tuesday. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods)

Chinta Puxley — He was an easygoing 22-year-old carnival worker who enjoyed hanging out with friends, playing video games and listening to the hard-core, hip-hop group Insane Clown Posse.

His attacker was a quiet, married man who immigrated from China in 2004, working a number of odd jobs including cleaning a Winnipeg church and delivering newspapers in Edmonton.

Their lives converged in an unspeakable act that shocked Canadians and made headlines around the world -- a quiet evening bus ride across the prairies that turned into a scene out of a horror movie.

One minute, Tim McLean was resting peacefully, listening to music through his earphones.

The next, passengers heard him "scream bloody murder" as he was stabbed over and over again, and eventually decapitated.

This coming March, Vince Li will go on trial in Winnipeg for second-degree murder before a judge alone. The only issue during the three-day trial will be Li's state of mind.

The legacy of the unprovoked attack is still being felt -- from new metal detectors in major Canadian bus stations to a call for tougher legislation for mentally ill people found not criminally responsible for their actions.

"I think this case strikes a chord with Canadians and upsets Canadians," said Alan Libman, one of Li's lawyers.

"It just shows us how fragile and unpredictable life is. This poor young man did nothing wrong. This poor young man and Mr. Li had never met, had no prior relationship. It just shows how uncontrollable the circumstances of life can be."

Li's lawyers are not disputing that he killed McLean.

The evening bus ride began uneventfully, that night back in July.

McLean was heading home to Manitoba after working at an Alberta fair. He chose a seat near the back of the bus. The bus stopped at a rest stop and McLean made small talk with fellow passengers as they had a smoke.

As the bus carried on toward Portage La Prairie, Li moved from his perch at the front of the bus to the back and took a seat next to McLean. A movie played to pass the time. McLean listened to music on his earphones and texted an old girlfriend before closing his eyes and resting his head against the window.

"We heard this blood-curdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly like 40 or 50 times," remembered fellow passenger Garnet Caton.

"There was no rage or anything. He was just like a robot, stabbing the guy."

Passengers rushed to the front, telling the driver to pull over. They scrambled to get out while the attacker started methodically carving up McLean's body, ignoring the chaos around him.

Caton and the driver barred the door from the outside while they waited for police.

Christopher Alguire was driving his truck along the highway, hauling a load of metal pipe from Alberta, when he saw passengers running from the bus parked on the side of the road. He pulled over and grabbed a metal bar from his truck.

Alongside a driver from another Greyhound bus that had pulled over, Alguire went into the bus to ensure no other passengers were on board. He watched a man leaning over McLean's body, hacking at his neck with a knife.

His eyes were "empty," Alguire remembered.

"It was like staring into a black hole."

Alguire followed the driver off the bus and bolted the door.

"The guy came to the front of the door with buddy's head in his hands, decapitated," remembered passenger Cody Olmstead, from Kentville, N.S.

Olmstead had just shared a cigarette with McLean hours before.

"He dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body back up."

Caton remembers throwing up at that point.

"He was wearing sunglasses," Caton said of the attacker. "It was no big deal to him."

The attacker turned away, sitting in the driver's seat and tried to start the bus, but the engine was disabled.

Police tactical teams arrived and arrested the suspect when he tried to climb out a bus window. Crown prosecutors say police then discovered a plastic bag containing an ear, nose and part of a mouth in the pocket of the accused.

Since then, very few have seen Li. He appeared in court in Portage La Prairie a few days after the gruesome killing, and just shook his head when asked if he wanted a lawyer.

"Please kill me," he said quietly.

His trial was moved to Winnipeg, where all spectators have to pass through airport-like security, following threats made on Li's life.

None of those who witnessed the horror that night will be expected to relive the experience at Li's trial. An agreed statement of facts will take care of the details of the attack.

Instead, the witnesses are expected to consist mainly of forensic psychiatrists who can speak about Li's mental health.

"The defence or Crown can raise evidence that the person didn't have the requisite mental intent, he didn't have any malice," Libman said. "In this type of situation, it would be that the person didn't know that killing that person was wrong, either morally or legally . . . There was no attempt to conceal it, no attempt to run away."

If Li is found not criminally responsible, he could be immediately discharged by the judge or hospitalized indefinitely depending on the seriousness of the crime. If he is ordered to undergo treatment, he would be reassessed regularly by a mental health review board.

"We don't punish people if they didn't intend to do something or if they honestly believed what they were doing was right because of an illness," Libman said. "We don't punish people who are not at fault. He would just be treated and get medical help."

But for Carol deDelley, McLean's mother, the prospect that the man charged in her son's death might eventually be released is too much to bear. She, along with others, are already pushing for tougher laws to ensure that doesn't happen.

"My son Timothy lost his life and our lives will never be the same without him being a part of it," she said at a recent vigil to press for changes to legislation. "Myself and my family are seeking justice for Timothy (and) mercy for ourselves."

The family is also suing Greyhound, the federal government and Li for failing to ensure McLean's safety. The $150,000 lawsuit is not about the money but is about accountability, the family's lawyer has said.

In the meantime, Greyhound has brought in increased security at some major bus stations. Passengers in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary will now be swept with hand-held metal detectors before they board the bus. But most bus stops are in small towns or by the side of a rural road where passengers won't be screened.

However, all passengers have to stow their luggage in the cargo compartments with the exception of purses, wallets and books.

Other bus companies have taken it one step further.

The Saskatchewan Transportation Company, which runs bus service across the province, just brought in new security measures including cameras, global positioning units and a panic button that immediately dispatches police to the bus's location.

Drivers are also getting more training in self-defence and conflict resolution.

Although Greyhound said they still "have a lot of full buses," spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said they won't be assessing ridership until early January.

"It was a very tragic event that occurred in Manitoba and not one that we believe we could have been prepared for," she said.

Hopefully this guy going into the Mental Hospital with a Striaght Jacket for life!

This just in: Vince Li; Tim McLean's murderer has been found not criminally responsible for the events on the Greyhound Bus. Now he will most likely be in a mental hospital or released into the community for care. However, it's most likely to be the former.

During the trial, Li stated that the voice of god in his head told him to kill Tim McLean. However, the only people I can think of would agree with him were the ones who {fortunately} didn't show at Tim McLean's funeral.

Certainly, I'd rather not see him on an overnight train/bus ride.

This God guy sure seems scary o_O

I remember I turned the TV on the other day to see footage of a Greyhound bus surrounded by cruisers, and I was thinking "OMG. AGAIN?" But It was archive footage

Gotta love the media response...... Not criminally responsible based on mental disorder almost always gives a longer sentence than ANYTHING but being sentenced as a dangerous offender.

compared to li, the westboro church, is more or less a cult disguised as a church in a way, they brainwash people into thinking homosexuals are evil and so on, nobodys safe in their eyes, even princess diana! they said she went to hell. thats a ridiculous just because she cheated on charles, yeah well he did that too with camila for frick sakes! she donated her time and resources in advocating the ban on land mines! tring to save kids in countrys with landmines buried everywhere. she mightve been adulterous but im sure god (if you believe in heaven and hell) outweighed that with her humanitarian actions

That doesn't make sense. Not criminally responsible means no charges. Therefore, you don't support the concept of not being criminally responsible and feel that the mentally ill should have to operate at the same level as a 'healthy' person insofar as the legal process is concerned?

Victim's family angry beheading bus still in use

Canwest News ServiceJune 5, 2009

The Greyhound bus where a sleeping Tim McLean was stabbed, dismembered and cannibalized nearly one year ago by Vince Li remains on the road in Canada, drawing ire from the victim's family.

"It's disrespectful," said Carol deDelley, McLean's mother, from her Winnipeg home Thursday. "I just think it's a bad thing to do. But, at the end of the day, it's all down to the money, isn't it?"

Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said the bus no longer operates in Manitoba.

"After we did some extensive restoration and cleaning . . . then the bus was put in service in another province," said Wambaugh, adding the bus number was retired.

McLean, 22, was attacked last July near Portage la Prairie, Man., in an incident that made news around the world because of its brutality.

McLean was repeatedly stabbed, then beheaded, dismembered and cannibalized by Li in front of three dozen witnesses -- all other passengers on the bus, which was travelling from Edmonton to Winnipeg.

Li was suffering from untreated schizophrenia and psychotic delusions at the time, which included hearing commands from God ordering him to kill McLean, whom he apparently viewed as a demon.

In his trial in March, he was found not criminally responsible for the murder. This week, a review board decided Li would remain under heavy security at a Manitoba psychiatric facility.

They cleaned it up, changed the number and put it back into service in another part of Canada.

Jeez, no way am I ever taking Greyhound again... the thought of being on that bus is a little to creepy.

Soon enough the new number will be leaked by a Greyhound staffer. It's the internet after all.
