History

492 Rochester (original)

  • July 1, 1991 - Route introduced, contracted to ATE Management & Services. Route runs between Oakland University and the Oakland Mall Hub via Squirrel Road, Walton Boulevard, University Drive, Rochester Road, Maple Road and Chicago Road.
  • June 9, 1994 - SMART takes over operation after privatization costs are eliminated after ATE's drivers joined the Amalgamated.
  • May/June 1995 - Route discontinued north of South Boulevard after Rochester and Rochester Hills opt out of SMART.
  • December 11, 1995 - Due to systemwide restructuring, route is discontinued, with Troy dial-a-ride service expanding to include Rochester Road within that city.

492 Rochester (current)

  • April 22, 2024 - Route is restored, running over almost the same alignment that the original route ran between July 1, 1991 and May/June 1995 (albeit serving Big Beaver Road and John R. Road instead of Maple Road) as well as continuing south of the Oakland Mall Hub to serve the Royal Oak and Jason Hargrove Transit Centers, replacing route 430 south of the Royal Oak Transit Center. This service change is the result of Oakland County moving into a countywide opt-in model that was approved by voters in the November 2022 general election.
