A timeline of Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation-related events that took place between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2018.

December

  • SMART begins converting their entire fleet to bio-diesel fuel.

2010

February

2011

August

  • Late August 2011 - Banners advertising the usage of bio-diesel fuel on SMART begin appearing on the exteriors of many buses, above the windows on the door side.

September

The September 2011 redesign of smartbus.org as it appeared on November 6, 2011.
  • September 2011 - SMART redesigns it's website for the first time since 2004. This design would be used until August 2014.

November

  • November 3, 2011 - SMART unveils three new hybrid Gillig Low Floor buses with BRT fronts painted in the colors of Michigan universities. Identical buses would later be delivered in 2013 and 2014.

December

  • December 12, 2011 - SMART cuts service by 22% as a result of lower property values.

2012

August

  • August 2012 - Oakland County approves a two-year extension to the SMART millage.

December

  • December 2012 - A Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is formed for Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties.

2013

  • Late 2013 - SMART installs Clever Devices LED signage and automated announcements in all buses.

2014

  • Early 2014 - SMART begins using vinyl bus wrap advertisements.

August

The current version of smartbus.org as it appeared on November 20, 2014.
  • August 10, 2014 - SMART's website is redesigned again, including a new bus tracker map.

September

  • September 10, 2014 - SMART announces that they would be purchasing 59 40' diesel-electric hybrid Gillig Low Floor buses with BRT fronts to replace outdated Low Floors dating from the early 2000's.

October

  • October 2014 - The first 3 buses of a 12-unit order are delivered.
  • October 13, 2014 - Lathrup Village opts back into SMART. As a result, route 420 begins stopping within the community, which is surrounded entirely by Southfield (the northern end had already been served by route 740).
  • October 27, 2014 - The Lakeside Mall Hub temporarily relocates to a location about 250 feet west in front of the Sears entrance due to construction.

November

  • November 20, 2014 - Outfront Media replaces CBS Outdoor as the advertisement provider on SMART.
  • November 22, 2014 - The Northland Center Hub reopens.
  • November 23, 2014 - The Holiday Magic Parade takes place on Washington Avenue in downtown Royal Oak, affecting route 460.
  • November 26, 2014 - The already-existing M-1 Rail construction detours on routes 445, 450, 460, 465, 475 and 610 are modified to accommodate the staging of floats for America's Thanksgiving Parade.
  • November 28, 2014 - Two Santa Claus parades affect two routes: the Mount Clemens Santa Parade affects route 560 and the Grosse Pointe Santa Claus Parade affects route 610.
  • November 29, 2014 - The Santaland Parade takes place in Garden City, affecting route 280.

2015

January

  • January 5, 2015 - Winter service changes take effect:
    • Routing changes are implemented on routes 275 and 405 in Southfield.
    • Route 275 trips operating via Telegraph and Eureka Roads between Goddard Road and Southland Center are converted into express trips that remain on Telegraph between Michigan Avenue and Cherry Hill Road and between 7 and 8 Mile Roads.
    • Schedule changes are implemented on routes 445, 450, 460, 465, 475 and 740.
  • January 30, 2015 - The 2015 Meridian Winter Blast takes place in downtown Detroit, affecting routes 445, 450, 460, 465 and 475.
  • January 31, 2015 - The Grosse Pointe Farms Winterfest takes place, affecting route 610.

February

  • February 11, 2015 - The Meridian Winter Blast detours on routes 445, 450, 460, 465 and 475 end.

April

  • April 6, 2015 - Spring service changes take effect:
    • The northern terminus of route 140 is cut back from Fairlane Town Center to the new John D. Dingell Transit Center. Route 250 is extended to the Transportation Center along the former route of 140.
    • The Southgate Park & Ride lot for route 830 relocates to the Meijer store on Fort Street, across the street from the former lot at a Super Kmart store, which closed in October 2014.
    • Schedule changes are implemented on routes 140, 160, 200, 250 and 280.

June

  • June 15, 2015:
    • Summer service changes take effect. The only changes made are to the schedules of routes 125, 275 and 830
    • After months of sitting idle at the Oakland Terminal due to delays in component delivery, 3015, part of the initial 10 new buses, is placed into service, operating as the seventh route 125 run.

July

  • July 21, 2015 - The remainder of the initial 10 new hybrid buses enter service.
  • Late July 2015 - Banners advertising the smartbus.org bus tracker begin appearing on the exteriors of many buses, above the windows on the door side.

September

  • September 7, 2015 - Fall service changes take effect:
    • Route 760 is rerouted to operate via Crooks Road, Meijer Drive (via the Meijer store in Royal Oak) and Delemere Avenue back to 14 Mile Road. Through service on 14 Mile between Crooks and Delemere is discontinued.
    • Schedule changes are implemented on routes 140, 160, 250, 450, 460, 730 and 740.

2016

April

  • April 4, 2016 - Spring service changes take effect:
    • Route 430 is extended to the Troy Transit Center via Big Beaver, Coolidge and Maple Road, and as a result service to Somerset North is withdrawn in favor of a new routing via Somerset South.
    • Schedule changes are implemented on routes 125, 400, 710 and 851

May

June

  • June 6, 2016:
    • The detour for Woodward Routes 445, 450, 460, 465, and 475 due to construction for the M-1 Rail project has been revised as follows:
      • Southbound: Regular route on southbound Woodward past M.L. King Blvd, right Fisher Service Dr, left Cass, left Grand River, right Griswold, left Larned, regular route.
      • Northbound: From Woodward and Congress, left Congress, right Griswold, left Fort, right Washington, left Michigan right Cass, past W. Montcalm, right Fisher Service Drive, left Woodward, regular route.
      • SMART buses will serve all regular SMART bus stops along the detour route. Southbound buses will also deboard passengers on southbound Griswold just before State. Northbound limited buses will also board passengers on westbound Michigan just past Washington.
    • The detour due to the M-1 Rail project for Route 610 Kercheval has been revised until further notice as follows:
      • Southbound: Regular route to northbound Cass past W. Montcalm, right Fisher Service Drive, left Woodward, regular route.
      • Northbound: Regular route on southbound Woodward past M.L. King Blvd, right Fisher Service Drive, left Cass, past Bagley, regular route.
      • Drivers will board and deboard passengers at any posted SMART bus stop or any safe location along the detour route.
    • Due to construction for the M-1 Rail on MLK Jr Blvd, all Route 515 and 560 trips serving the VA Hospital will be on detour until further notice as follows:
      • Northbound: From VA Hospital, continue south on John R, right Mack, left Woodward, right W. Fisher Service Drive, left Cass, regular route.
      • Southbound: Regular route to northbound Cass, right Fisher Service Drive, left Woodward, right Mack, regular route to VA Hospital.
  • June 9, 2016 - Due to the 2016 summer Eat to the Beat concert series at the City Centre Plaza in the Southfield Civic Center, Route 405 Northwestern buses will be on detour between 11:00 am and 2:30 pm as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route to westbound Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., right Lahser, left 11 Mile Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route to eastbound 11 Mile Road, right Lahser, left Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., regular route.
  • June 10-12, 2016 - Due to the Royal Oak Clay, Glass & Metal Show, Woodward Route 460 and evening Route 450 trips will be on detour in downtown Royal Oak beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10th through Sunday, June 12th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m as follows:
    • Inbound: Regular route to eastbound 11 Mile, right Lafayette, stay right on Lafayette, pick up/drop off on west side of Lafayette across from Transit Center, south on Lafayette to left Lincoln, right Washington, regular route.
    • Outbound: Regular route to Washington, left Lincoln, right Lafayette past 6th to Royal Oak Transit Center, regular route.
  • June 11, 2016 - Due to the annual Berkley Art Bash Route 740 Twelve Mile will be on detour as follows:
    • Eastbound: Regular route to eastbound 12 Mile Road to Greenfield, right Greenfield, left Catalpa, right Coolidge, regular route.
    • Westbound: Regular route to northbound Coolidge, left Catalpa, right Greenfield, left 12 Mile Road, regular route
  • June 18, 2016 - Due to the annual Cruisin’ Gratiot event in Eastpointe, Route 710 Nine Mile will be on detour beginning at 10:00 am as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route on westbound 9 Mile Road, right Kelly, left 1st turnback to southbound Kelly, right 8 Mile Road, right Schoenherr, left 9 Mile Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route on eastbound 9 Mile, right Schoenherr, right 8 Mile Road, left 1st turnback to eastbound 8 Mile Road, left 1st turnback past Kelly to westbound 8 Mile Road, right Kelly, right 9 Mile Road, regular route.
  • June 20, 2016 - Summer service changes take effect:
    • Routes 560 Gratiot and 565 Gratiot Limited will no longer travel to County Line Road in New Baltimore. The route will end at Rose Street by the McDonald’s restaurant. Weekday, Saturday and Sunday trips will be changed accordingly.
    • Trips on Routes 140 Southshore and 250 Ford Road will be changed to accommodate adjusted running times.
    • Due to construction on Grand River between 10 Mile and Haggerty, Route 330 Grand River will be on detour until further notice as follows:
      • Northbound: Regular route on Grand River over M-5 to 10 Mile Road, keep left onto 10 Mile Road, right Haggerty, right into shopping center on southeast corner of Grand River and Haggerty (about 400 feet before Grand River/Haggerty intersection, turn around in parking lot and exit out to left Haggerty, regular route.
      • Southbound: Regular route.
  • June 23-27, 2016 - Due to the annual Trenton Mid-Summer Festival, Route 160 Downriver and Route 830 Downriver Park & Ride buses will detour beginning Thursday, June 23 until Monday, June 27 at 9:00 am or until streets are clear. Buses will operate as follows:
    • 160, 830 Southbound: Regular route on westbound Jefferson to Harrison, right Harrison, right Fort, left 1st turnback to southbound Fort, right West, regular route.
    • 160, 830 Northbound: Regular route on eastbound West Rd to Fort, right Fort, left 1st turnback to northbound Fort, right Harrison, left Jefferson, regular route.
  • June 24, 2016 - Due to the annual Mt Clemens Independence Day Celebration Fireworks, Gratiot Routes 560 and 565 will be on detour from 5pm (but may go on detour earlier than noted) until 12 midnight or streets are clear as follows:
    • Northbound: Regular route on northbound Gratiot to Church, left Church, right Groesbeck, right Elizabeth across North Avenue into Clair, left Gratiot, regular route.
    • Southbound: Regular route on southbound Gratiot into the M-3 bypass, stay to the right on the M-3 bypass past Cass (do not go into downtown Mt. Clemens), continue into southbound Gratiot, regular route.
  • June 26, 2016 - Due to the New Baltimore Fish Fly Festival, Route 560 Gratiot trips serving New Baltimore will be on detour from 10:00 am- 2:00pm as follows:
    • Outbound: Regular route to 23 Mile, left Huntley, left Cricklewood (end of route, layover on street in front of New Baltimore DPS garage).
    • Inbound (New Baltimore DPS garage): Left Birch, right 23 Mile, regular route.

July

  • July 11-18, 2016 - Beginning Monday, July 11 until 12:00 noon on Monday, July 18, Routes 140 Southshore and 160 Downriver will detour in downtown Wyandotte for the Wyandotte Street Art Fair as follows:
    • Route 140 Southbound: Regular route on southbound Biddle to Vinewood, right Vinewood, left 3rd, right Oak, left 5th, continue past Maple, layover alongside Wyandotte Roosevelt High School.
    • Route 140 Northbound: From layover on 5th, left Eureka, left 3rd, right Vinewood, left Biddle, regular route.
    • Weekday Route 160 Northbound: Regular route on eastbound Eureka to 3rd, left 3rd, right Vinewood, left Biddle, regular route.
    • Weekday Route 160 Southbound: Regular route on southbound Biddle to Vinewood, right Vinewood, left 3rd, right Eureka, regular route.
    • Saturday Route 160 Northbound: Regular route to eastbound Eureka, left 3rd, left Oak, left 5th, continue past Maple, layover alongside Wyandotte Roosevelt High School.
    • Saturday Route 160 Southbound: From layover on 5th, right Eureka, regular route.
  • July 14, 2016 - Due to the 2016 summer Eat to the Beat concert series at the City Centre Plaza in the Southfield Civic Center, Route 405 Northwestern buses will be on detour between 11:00 am and 2:30 pm as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route to westbound Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., right Lahser, left 11 Mile Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route to eastbound 11 Mile Road, right Lahser, left Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., regular route.
  • July 14-18, 2016 - Due to the annual Founders Festival in downtown Farmington, Route 805 Grand River Park & Ride will be on detour beginning Thursday, July 14 at 11:00 am until Monday, July 18 at 9:00 am as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route to northbound Farmington, right Slocum, left Mayfield, left Grand River past Farmington Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route to eastbound Grand River past Farmington Road, right Mayfield, right Slocum, left Farmington Road, regular route.
  • July 15, 2016 - Due to construction on Maple Road, trips on Route 405 Northwestern will be on detour as follows:
    • Eastbound: Regular route to Drake, left Drake, right Walnut Lake, right Orchard Lake, continue regular route.
    • Westbound: Regular route at this time to Henry Ford Hospital.
  • July 15-18, 2016 - Due to the Pig & Whiskey festival in downtown Ferndale, Route 710 Nine Mile will be on detour on Friday, July 15 from 8:00 am until Monday, July 18 8:00am or streets are clear as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route on westbound 9 Mile Road to Hilton, right Hilton, left Cambourne, right Woodward, left 1st turn back onto southbound Woodward, right 9 Mile Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route on eastbound 9 Mile Road to Woodward, right Woodward, left 1st turn back to northbound Woodward, right Cambourne, right Hilton, left 9 Mile Road, regular route.
  • July 16, 2016:
    • Due to the After 6 Event in Grosse Pointe Park, Route 610 Kercheval will be on detour beginning at 3:00 pm through the end of the service day as follows:
      • Northbound: Regular route to Maryland past Kercheval, right Vernor, right Balfour, left Kercheval, regular route.
      • Southbound: Regular route on Kercheval to Balfour, right Balfour, left Vernor, left Maryland past Kercheval, regular route.
    • Due to the annual Founders Parade in downtown Farmington, Route 330 will be on detour from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm or streets are clear as follows:
      • Northbound: Regular route to westbound Grand River, left Orchard Lake, right Freedom, right Drake, left Grand River, regular route.
      • Southbound: Regular route to eastbound Grand River, right Drake, left Freedom, left Orchard Lake, right Grand River, regular route.
  • July 23, 2016 - Due to the annual Birmingham Day on the Town, Woodward Routes 450, 460 and Route 780 Fifteen Mile will be on detour until 10:00 pm as follows:
    • 450 Northbound: Regular route to northbound Woodward, right Elm, left Bowers, right Old Woodward, right Brown, right Woodward, left 1st turnback to northbound Woodward past Oak, regular route.
    • 450 Southbound: Regular route to southbound Woodward past Quarton, stay to left, continue on Woodward past Maple, right Brown, left Old Woodward, regular route.
    • 460 Northbound: Regular route to northbound Woodward, right Elm, left Bowers, right Old Woodward, right Brown, left Peabody, right Maple across Woodward, regular route.
    • 460 Southbound: Regular route to westbound Maple past Woodward, left Peabody, right Brown, left Old Woodward, regular route.
    • 780 Westbound: Regular route to westbound Maple, left Peabody (between Old Woodward and Woodward), right Brown, right Chester, left Maple, regular route.

  • July 25-TBA, 2016 - Due to construction, Route 255 buses will not be able to access the regular bus stop or parking lot at the Dearborn Ice Skating Center starting Monday, July 25 and will detour as follows:
    • AM Eastbound: Regular route past Ternes, left first turnback past Chase, right Ternes, left drive to skating rink, board passengers on service drive alongside of ice rink, right Ford, left 1st turnback to regular route.
    • PM Westbound: regular route to Ford, right Ternes, left service drive, deboard passengers on service drive alongside ice rink, right Ford, regular route.
  • July 28-TBA, 2016 - Due to construction on Maple Road, trips on Route 780 15 Mile will be on detour as follows:
    • Eastbound: Regular route to Cranbrook, right Cranbrook, left Lincoln, left Southfield, right Maple continue regular route.
    • Westbound: Regular route to Southfield, left Southfield, right Lincoln, right Cranbrook, left Maple, continue regular route.
  • July 29-30, 2016 - Due to the annual City of Grosse Pointe Sidewalk Sale, Route 610 Kercheval will be on detour beginning 9:00 am on Friday, July 29 until 5:00 pm Saturday, July 30 as follows:
    • Southbound: Regular route on Kercheval, right Neff, left Waterloo, left Cadieux, right Kercheval, regular route.
    • Northbound: Regular route on Kercheval, left Cadieux, right Waterloo, right Neff, left Kercheval, regular route.
  • July 29-31, 2016 - Due to the Piggyback BBQ Festival all routes serving downtown Pontiac will begin and end trips at the SMART bus stop on Huron between Perry and Mill beginning 9:00 am Friday, July 29th through Sunday July 31st at 11:00 pm or streets are clear.

August

  • August 3-TBA, 2016 - Due to construction on Maple Road, trips on Route 445 Woodward Limited will be on detour beginning Wednesday, August 3, 2016 as follows:
    • Southbound: Regular route to Cranbrook, right Cranbrook, left Lincoln, left Southfield, right Maple continue regular route.
    • Northbound: Regular route to Southfield, left Southfield, right Lincoln, right Cranbrook, left Maple, continue regular route.
  • August 11, 2016 - Due to the 2016 summer Eat to the Beat concert series at the City Centre Plaza in the Southfield Civic Center, Route 405 Northwestern buses will be on detour between 11:00 am and 2:30 pm as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route to westbound Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., right Lahser, left 11 Mile Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route to eastbound 11 Mile Road, right Lahser, left Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., regular route.
  • August 19, 2016:
    • Due to the annual Berkley CruiseFest parade and activities in the downtown Berkley area, Route 740 Twelve Mile will be on detour all day as follows:
      • Westbound: Regular route to westbound 11 Mile Road past Coolidge, right Greenfield, left 12 Mile Road, regular route.
      • Eastbound: Regular route on eastbound 12 Mile Road to Greenfield, right Greenfield, left 11 Mile past Coolidge, regular route.
    • Due to the Pontiac Road Kill event prior to the Woodward Dream Cruise in downtown Pontiac, Route 450 Woodward will be on detour on all day as follows:
      • Northbound: Regular route on northbound Woodward past Square Lake: right MLK Blvd, left Auburn, right NB Woodward to regular route, end route at bus stop on Huron between Perry and Mill.
      • Southbound (from bus stop on Huron between Perry and Mill): Regular route to SB Woodward: left Auburn, right MLK Blvd, left Woodward, regular route.
    • Due to Woodward Dream Cruise activities all routes serving downtown Pontiac will begin and end trips at the SMART bus stop on Huron between Perry and Mill beginning all day through the end of the service day.
  • August 20, 2016 - During the Woodward Dream Cruise, multiple routes are detoured:
    • Routes 450 and 460 will operate from State Fairgrounds via Eight Mile, Hilton, Campbell, Eleven Mile, Royal Oak Transit Center, Main, Thirteen Mile and Coolidge to Somerset Collection. Route 450 will continue north via Big Beaver to Interstate 75 to M-59 to the Pontiac Transportation Center.
    • Routes 275, 752, 753, and 756 will be detoured in Pontiac as follows:
      • 275 Northbound: Regular route to eastbound Huron, right Williams, right Orchard Lake Rd., left first turnback to east bound Orchard Lake Rd., right Woodward, end at the Pontiac Transportation Center on SB Woodward just past Orchard Lake Rd.
      • 275 Southbound (from the Pontiac Transportation Center): South on Woodward to left Whittemore, left Woodward, left Auburn into Orchard Lake Rd., right Williams, left Huron, regular route.
      • 752 Southbound: Regular route to eastbound State, continue straight on State across Huron into Williams, right Orchard Lake Rd, left first turn back to eastbound Orchard Lake Rd, right Woodward, end at the Pontiac Transportation Center on SB Woodward just past Orchard Lake Rd.
      • 752 Northbound (from the Pontiac Transportation Center): South on Woodward to left Whittemore, left Woodward, left Auburn into Orchard Lake Rd., right Williams across Huron into State, regular route.
      • 753 Southbound: Regular route on southbound Baldwin to left Cesar E Chavez, right Sanderson, left State across Huron into Williams, right Orchard Lake Rd, left first turnback to eastbound Orchard Lake Rd, right Woodward, end at the Pontiac Transportation Center on SB Woodward just past Orchard Lake Rd.
      • 753 Northbound (from the Pontiac Transportation Center): South on Woodward to left Whittemore, left Woodward, right Cesar E Chavez, regular route.
      • 756 Westbound: Regular route on southbound Perry to Howard, right Howard, left Baldwin, left Cesar E. Chavez, right Sanderson, left State across Huron into Williams, right Orchard Lake Rd, left first turnback to eastbound Orchard Lake Rd, right Woodward, end at the Pontiac Transportation Center on SB Woodward just past Orchard Lake Rd.
      • 756 Eastbound (from the Pontiac Transportation Center): South on Woodward to left Whittemore, left Woodward, right Perry, regular route.
  • August 22-TBA, 2016 - Due to construction at the Royal Oak Meijer, trips on Routes 415/420 and Route 760 13/14 Mile will be on detour beginning Monday, August 22, 2016 as follows:
    • 415/420 Northbound: Regular route to Coolidge Hwy past the entrance to Meijer Drive, continue north on Coolidge Hwy, left first turn around onto southbound Coolidge Hwy, right Doyle Drive into Troy Transit Center, end of route.
    • 415/420 Southbound (From Troy Transit Center): continue north on Doyle Drive to Maple, right Maple, right Coolidge Hwy past Meijer Drive, regular route.
    • 760 Eastbound: Regular route to Coolidge Hwy, left northbound Coolidge Hwy, left first turn around to southbound Coolidge Hwy, left 14 Mile Road past Delemere to Crooks, continue regular route.
    • 780 Westbound: Regular route to Crooks, continue past Crooks on 14 Mile Road, right on northbound Coolidge Hwy, left first turn around to southbound Coolidge Hwy, right 14 Mile, continue regular route.
  • August 31-September 6, 2016 - Arts, Beats, and Eats detours affect routes 430, 450, 460, 465, 730 and 740, and also, the Royal Oak Transit Center becomes temporarily inaccessible.

September

  • September 1-TBA, 2016 - Due to construction at I-375 in downtown Detroit, outbound trips on routes 610 Kercheval, 620 Charlevoix, and 635 Jefferson Express will be on detour beginning Thursday, September 1st until further notice as follows:
    • OUTBOUND: Regular route to Larned Street, straight past Chrysler Service Drive, right Rivard Street, left Jefferson, regular route.
    • INBOUND: Regular route.
  • September 5, 2016 - Fall service changes take effect:
    • RefleX Gratiot begins service.
    • With the completion of the Jefferson Street Bridge, Route 125 will resume travel on Jefferson to Westend to Fort. Buses will no longer travel down Coolidge to the Fisher Freeway to Springwells.
    • On Route 430, a selected trip has been added to serve the Royal Oak High School on Crooks just north of 13 Mile Road.
  • September 8, 2016 - Due to the 2016 summer Eat to the Beat concert series at the City Centre Plaza in the Southfield Civic Center, Route 405 Northwestern buses will be on detour between 11:00 am and 2:30 pm as follows:
    • Westbound: Regular route to westbound Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., right Lahser, left 11 Mile Road, regular route.
    • Eastbound: Regular route to eastbound 11 Mile Road, right Lahser, left Civic Center Drive past Central Park Blvd., regular route.
