This route services Coolidge Highway between the Royal Oak Meijer store and 14 Mile Road, 14 Mile Road between Coolidge Highway and Southfield Road, Southfield Road between 14 Mile Road and Northwestern Highway, Northwestern Highway between Southfield Road and 8 Mile Road, 8 Mile Road between Northwestern Highway and Woodward Avenue and Woodward Avenue between 8 Mile Road and the State Fair Transit Center. Limited-stop service is provided along 8 Mile Road. Most trips are interlined with route 415.
- November 27, 2006 - Service along Greenfield Road between 8 Mile Road and Joy Road is eliminated as route 420 is rerouted and extended to downtown Detroit to replace route 410.
- December 12, 2011 - Due to systemwide service cuts, route 420 south of the State Fair Transit Center is eliminated.
- 2014 - Stops are added in the city of Lathrup Village after that community opts back into SMART.
- September 5, 2017 - The Northland Center Hub, which route 420 had served, closes.
