The John D. Dingell Transit Center is a multimodal railroad station serving National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) and Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation located on the Michigan Department of Transportation Michigan Line in Dearborn, MI. It is SMART's second-newest hub and one of Amtrak's newest stations.
History
Dearborn was previously served through a small, nondescript station that opened in 1978 about a mile east between Greenfield Road and the Southfield Freeway. That station lacked any transit connections, although SMART and Detroit Department of Transportation both had buses on nearby Michigan Avenue. Construction of the new John D. Dingell Transit Center was underway in 2013 and opened to Amtrak trains on December 20, 2014; and to SMART buses on April 6, 2015.
The John D. Dingell Transit Center was among the stations on 261 Fast Michigan, which began service on January 1, 2018.
Connecting routes
These connections allow Amtrak passengers to take a one-seat ride on SMART as far west as Westland and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, as far east as Downtown Detroit and as far south as Wyandotte.
- SMART 140 Southshore
- SMART 250 Ford Road
- SMART 261 Fast Michigan
SMART route 200 Michigan Avenue Local also serves the transit center from separate flags on Michigan Avenue in front of a nearby Tim Horton's restaurant, which includes a shelter at the eastbound stop.
