Calgary Transit CTrain Service Disruptions

A train derailment at the Tuscany LRT station is disrupting nearby traffic, as emergency crews respond to the scene.

Police say it appears a northbound train overshot the end of the track and derailed.

Calgary radio station CHQR says witnesses report the train appeared to be going fast when it hit a barrier at the end of the rails, causing two to three cars to jump the tracks.

There were only two passengers, plus the driver aboard the CTrain when it went off the tracks, according to police. They have all been removed from the train cars and the driver was being assessed by EMS.

Police said via Twitter Crowchild Trail has been shut down from 12 Mile Coulee Rd. to Stoney Tr. N.W. in both directions.

Calgary Transit, meanwhile, has said via social media that its service has not been disrupted.

It will be interesting to see how they will move them. Probably tonight...crane....tractor trailer? My guess 2311 might go offsite for repair's if not maybe even scrapped...

Not sure what they did with this Salt Lake citys S70. It suffered a similar fate as 2311

15 minutes ago, LRT said:

Reports say car 2311 DONE!

That's sad to hear... can't imagine the costs that associate with that.

Power between Crowfoot and Tuscany stations is getting shutting down. Shuttle service will be implemented between the two stations.

There was just another media update with Russell Davies, acting director of CT.

  • The train stopped at Tuscany station, performed its normal duties of offloading passengers, and then, for reasons unknown, proceeded further west at full speed, hitting the fence at over 60km/h
  • Catenary pole and tensioning weights for the catenary were struck and came through the windshield, but fortunately "just missed" the operator
  • Operator is in hospital, haven't been able to speak to her yet, had to be cut from the wreckage. "No reason to believe it's a medical issue". Senior operator, "pretty experienced".
  • No reason to believe there was any weird operation from the train, going to pull train recorder data from all three cars to make sure
  • "The first car [2311] looks like it's a write off, significant damage on the underside and to all major systems and wiring".
  • Full extent of the damage to the centre (2310) and trailing cars (2329) isn't known yet, but second car also sustained "significant damage", third car is believed to be okay but still investigating
  • A crane is coming from Leduc and should be arriving between 3 and 4 pm, train is being cut in half to be removed from the site
