O-Train Line 1 | The Confederation Line

Recommended Posts

Today (September 14th) is the 4 year anniversary when the Confederation Line started revenue service. When it was supposed to mark a new era, but instead a lot more issues have been plaguing the system needing to change the strategy and approach to service delivery. The biggest one was the derailment that shutdown the line for 54 consecutive days back in September 2021.

At the same time, there are some time periods where the demand at some stations such as UOttawa when classes are finished that trains reach full capacity while others may wait for another train that comes with two cars to clear the platform.

I just posted a couple of videos of the Confederation Line, under the current operational condition (single-car train operation and double-car train operation).

Single-car Train Operation, at every station and both sides of the platform (caution the video is 1 hour and 51 minutes long)

Double-car Train Operation while spotting at Belfast Road and Tremblay Road (almost 15 minutes long)

Whatever vehicle they were testing last night was displaying the direction, saw quite a few confused folks when the blair train didn't open the doors

Same with 1103 today. (Had Tunneys Pasture displayed.) Though the station announcements did say the train was not in service.

Here is the full wording of the staff e-mail/memo to City Council, obtained by Ken Gray: https://bulldogottawa.com/o-train-to-return-to-double-car-service/

Quote

The purpose of this memo is to advise the Mayor and Members of Council that OC Transpo will  provide double-car train service on O-Train Line 1 beginning on Monday, January 8.

Double-car trains will operate on weekdays. The larger trains will accommodate customer volumes during the busiest times on the system, improving customer comfort. Trains will operate approximately every five to six minutes.

The move to double-car trains is due to a new measure that extends the life of the wheel hub assemblies on the vehicles while continuing to ensure the ongoing safe operation of the fleet.

Wheel hub assembly nut pinning

At the joint Transit Commission and Light Rail Subcommittee meeting on December 14, 2023, an update was provided on a proposal to add pins to the restraining nut on the axle hubs to  extend their useable life. Axle hub assemblies are currently required to be replaced every 60,000 km as part of the containment plan outlined in the Alstom Safety Note. This has been complicated by supply chain issues and required the careful management of the fleet to sustain  service, including the use of single-car trains.

Rideau Transit Maintenance (RTM) has completed the necessary testing and analysis of the proposed nut pinning solution. OC Transpo and Transportation Resource Associates (TRA) are satisfied that safety requirements have been met and the hub assemblies with the nut pinning solution can now be deployed to in-service vehicles. This added measure allows for the  immediate return to double-car trains on Line 1.

The rigorous inspections and maintenance requirements in Alstom’s Safety Note remain as a containment measure until the vehicle supplier is confident the program can be amended.

In addition, a test train will operate during regular service hours over the next couple of months to gather additional data for ongoing safety assurance. This testing allows for early detection of  potential issues. Customers may occasionally see this out-of-service test train on Line 1.

Further information and updates on the ongoing work to improve train reliability will be shared as  it becomes available.

Probably just me not paying attention, but it has come to my attention that Happy Goat at Rideau has closed down... Anyone know when they closed? I honestly don't even remember when they opened as well. If anyone has either answer, that would be appreciated!

Trains are starting to be tested along with the systems. First stage was between Blair and Montreal Stations when service finished for the night.

Eventually, the testing will reach Trim Station once the systems are installed.

Subject / Objet O-Train East Extension Train Testing Begins Date: February 26, 2024

The purpose of this memo is to provide the Mayor and Members of Council with notification of  an important milestone achieved on the Stage 2 O-Train East Extension.

The O-Train East Extension will extend OC Transpo’s rail network east from Blair Station to  Trim Road. It will add 12.5 kilometres of rail to Line 1 along with five new stations at Montreal Road, Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard, Convent Glen, Place d’Orléans and Trim Road.

Last night, after regular O-Train Line 1 service ended, an Alstom Citadis Spirit train was  operated on the O-Train East Extension for the first time from Blair Station to Montréal Station. This milestone was achieved following testing activities including track commissioning, traction  power substation testing, and overhead catenary system (OCS) testing. This series of tests  culminated in the successful energization of the OCS from Blair Station to Montréal Station.

Travelling at walking speed, the train was escorted by staff on foot to verify the interface  between the train’s pantograph and the OCS while the train was in motion. Additional testing  between Blair Station and Montréal Station is anticipated later this week as crews continue to  test and validate the OCS system. Testing of the signal and train control system is expected to  start this spring, after which residents will see regular, slow speed testing of trains on the line.

On a side note from personal observation, some railway signals have been installed in the Place d'Orleans area the LRT extension.

The test included a man walking along the track in front of the car to verify proper pantograph-wire contact.

Passed by Lincoln Fields and there appears to be some Rail (Tarped over) and Special Trackwork (Switches) onsite at two locations along the guideway.

Track work has begun between Lincoln Fields and the Junction of Line 1/3 with the double crossovers being laid just outside Lincoln Fields Station.

For the Confederation Line East Extension, an LRT train made it past the future Montreal Station (Montreal Road).

Below is a tweet with pictures and a video of the train going eastbound on Track 1 (westbound tracks) in the median of RR174, east of the St. George Etienne Cartier Parkway (formerly the Rockcliffe Parkway).
