NFI Group announced that the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, RTC, has awarded its subsidiary New Flyer of America a new contract for 30 Xcelsior compressed natural gas, CNG, sixty-foot, heavy-duty transit buses, with options to purchase up to 100 additional buses. RTC has since exercised 32 options. The new five-year contract is supported by Federal Transit Administration, FTA, funds. "This new order with future potential option orders for up to 100 additional high-capacity CNG buses demonstrates RTC's commitment to more sustainable and efficient transportation, and provides a transition point toward zero-emission mobility," said Paul Soubry, President and Chief Executive Officer, NFI. "With over 13,000 CNG buses on the roads across North America, NFI is a CNG technology leader in mass mobility." The new CNG buses will replace end-of-life diesel vehicles with cleaner, more efficient, low-emission mobility options, and deliver on RTC's Access 2040 Regional Transportation Plan, focused on improving air quality and enhancing multimodal connectivity.

I visited Las Vegas last month. I didn't get a chance to find Wright Streetcar, but both generations of Enviro 500 are on the strip big time.

Saw the double-decker also operated at some other routes including BHX, 202, and 203. It is interesting to see in ADL double-decker operated on the regular fix-route service (excluding commuter bus) in the US.

DEUCE is so frequent and it is often to see more than 1 bus at the same spot.

That's one interesting ad wrap in the second photo ??... but seriously nice pics man.  Those double deckers look sharp. Quick question....are the fixed routes the ADL's operate on near high traffic tourists areas or have enough passengers to justify having these buses on them instead of a standard 40 foot or articulated buses? Genuinely curious cause I'm not from or visited Las Vegas ?

Fair question.

Las Vegas has very high transit ridership. While the Strip routes carry plenty of tourists, the regular fixed routes carry large numbers of locals who are traveling to/from service sector jobs or other unremarkable daily errands.

Yes, far away from the Strip, volumes on streets like Nellis and Tropicana and North LV Blvd -do- justify higher-capacity buses -- whether double-deckers or artics.

LV is a surprisingly interesting town for transit. If you get a chance to visit, explore the outer reaches of the transit system -- you may be surprised at the high usage, especially in a lower-density, largely suburban environment.

In my opinion, if a route has a lot of short-haul trips and it doesn't serve a sightseeing purpose as DEUCE, perhaps articulated bus is a better option. The standing+seating capacity of double-decker is not really promising and its first floor has very limited space. That's why we see Environ 500 being used mostly in some long-distance express routes in some other systems.

Latest LV news - 011-061 being dragged off to SA Recycling. Last used on 401 Premium Outlets shuttle, that now gets 40 footers. Only about 5 of 351-370 C40LFs left, mostly used as trainers. 38 of 40 Enviros 20801-20840 now running, new paint job, silver replacing copper. Used on 301-Deuce. Older 150 series still on Deuce, also seen on Sahara and Boulder Hwy regularly. System on Saturday schedule Mon-Sat for a while now from lack of drivers (like that is something new...).

I bought this rare brochure in this year from UK.This book introduces built for Las Vegas Wright Streetcar buses, which were sadly scrapped in 2022.Perhaps this magazine was available at the 2008 APTA EXPO at San Diego where one of Streetcar was exhibited.

RTC of Southern Nevada has a survey going until November 3rd which I have linked below:

https://www.rtcsnv.com/ways-to-travel/fares-passes/titlevisurvey/

Here are the proposals:

  • A permanent $4 fare for The Deuce via rideRTC app
  • Ability to pay fare via debit and credit cards
  • Account based ticketing via smart card

Final comments:

Last time I visited Vegas, had to purchase a prepaid swipe card which I oped for the 3 day pass which costs $20 which would cover The Deuce being a premium fare route. Along with a 24 hour pass to cover me enough to cover fare to the airport.

The $4 fare is handy for The Deuce if you are only going to make a one-way trip without a transfer. $6 provides a 2 hour transfer, but it isn't worthwhile considering the traffic delays that can be encountered, the transfer would most likely run out before getting back on-board the next vehicle.

One day pass which is classified under 24 hours is two single fares. The 24 hours/3 days starts from the very first swipe at the farebox and expires 24 hours/3 days after the first swipe. It isn't like other transit agencies where passes expire at the end of their service day depending on how the scheduling is structured.

I did note in the survey requesting that they should have a smart card that can hold one or three day passes or fare capping so that customers don't pay more than the daily or weekly maximum. Considering that travel patterns have changed along with more efficient ways to pay. Seeing how other transit agencies have already adopted more modern payment methods and devices that can accommodate electronic payment methods.

During a recent trip to Las Vegas, I photographed an older Enviro500 double decker that did not have a fleet number visible from the open side of the bus. I did not notice it at the time so was unable to check for a bus number on the rear or closed side.

The licence plate appears to be new as it is not listed on the CPTDB wiki.

Any ideas as to the fleet number of this bus?

It looks as if this is one of the retired 100's series 2007 Enviro500's just with new license plates, as it seems there's no RTC branding anywhere on the bus. I've also noticed a bunch of buses running while displaying a 500's route number (this one being 503), which isn't one of the regular routes here (the original 500s routes became the BHX, DVX, SX and CX). It's possible either RTC has these as spares for shuttle buses or another contractor bought/leased them to use for an event.

The side sign says BHX-A so it appears to be in service for RTC unless the new owner doesn't fully know how to turn off the signs.

Interesting two weeks ago (July 11th), the transit call centre will be available around the clock every day Monday to Sunday. Even if someone has to call in at 2 AM in the morning, someone will be available to respond.

Only Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, they won't be available.

Considering that transit in Las Vegas operates around the clock.

Final comments:

The only other transit agency that has transit info operating around the clock is MTA in New York City. Of course, the subway operates around the clock for select lines.

Of course, Las Vegas never really sleeps. I have been out at 2 AM once on Fremont Street waiting for The Deuce at the first stop to get to my final destination and there is still plenty of passenger volume. Especially relying on the tourism.
