Border City Transit Posted April 15, 2018 Report Posted April 15, 2018 @Buzz2kb strikes again! Haha. Great pics and follow-up. I dig RTD -- a big variety of routes and service types. Pretty much any type of transit service you'd find anywhere in the US, you'll find at RTD. Despite their Gillig-heavy fleet, it's still a fun system to watch. Must have been twice as fun when they had Gillig Phantoms, Neoplans, Flxibles and Canadian New Looks! 18 hours ago, Buzz2kb said: 1. It seems that all MCI motorcoaches, New Flyer XD60's and of course the Mall Ride electric buses are operated in-house. That is consistent with my observations/understanding. Definitely, the artics all run out of RTD's directly operated Platte and East Metro facilities. Interesting that the MetroRide artics have their own number series (1800s)... as though to "permanently" set them apart from the regular artics (9300-9400 series). Mall Ride runs out of Platte. I always wonder about the deadhead route to/from the mall itself. It must be weird to drive a Mall Ride bus in mixed traffic, on a regular city street. As for the MCI coaches, I am 95% sure that they're all in-house... likely over-represented in Boulder. In fact, the official name of the Boulder facility is Boulder Intercity... a clear nod to the coaches. 18 hours ago, Buzz2kb said: For reference, here is the list of operator of the routes I've photographed so far: Looks "essentially" correct. As you've noted, some routes are split between operators. To my knowledge, RTD assigns individual blocks to one operator/division or another. This differs from many other systems that contract out, where entire routes are the domain of one operator. It's not uncommon to see a route that's, say, mostly RTD... but then an occasional trip/block operated by a contractor slips in. Or vice versa. The large number of peak-only routes adds to the fun. Take Route 40, for instance. It's an all-day route, mostly operated by First Transit. But there may be a loose peak-hour "extra" trip of Route 40 that's hooked to a trip of Route 39L... and that entire block comes from RTD East Metro Division. The result is "one-off" appearances in unexpected places. I don't believe there's a strict methodology to it. It seems to be whatever makes most sense in context of the entire schedule. There -have- been cases of routes mostly shifting operators. 65 Monaco Crosstown... was a contractor-operated route for a long time. Eventually, RTD took pretty much all of it in-house. 18 hours ago, Buzz2kb said: 3. While the Union Station and Civic Center are undoubtedly great places to spot MCI coaches during weekday peaks, Downtown Boulder Station and the 8th & Coffman Park and Ride are the best spots to spot all-day coach routes, with the BOLT, the FF family of routes (chiefly the FF1) and route N serving the former and the BOLT and LD family (Mon-Sat only) serving the latter. Amen! Keep the great observations and convo coming!

LDCY Posted December 12, 2018 Report Posted December 12, 2018 I visited Denver this summer. It was literally a lovely place where I would like to travel there again. Since I was in town only during the weekend, I couldn't get a chance to take pics of more weekday buses. Anyway, Mall Shuttle are impressive for both the fleet and the frequency lol. 3 2

Border City Transit Posted October 20, 2019 Report Posted October 20, 2019 Oh, and @MountainWizard ... great backdated roster, but how could you forget these recent retirees?? And this oddball (forgive the mediocre pic)... 9101, which kept its original paint scheme, but picked up weird, silver-aluminum window sashes. Glad they didn't apply that more widely -- it lent the bus a tough, grimy, 'cities in decline' kind of look... like it was a prop vehicle from a 1975 prison movie. 2
kona404 Posted March 18, 2021 Report Posted March 18, 2021 Anybody have any updated fleet information? Specifically, I know coach numbers 3666, 3671, and 3673 exist, as do 6501-6568, but can’t find any information on them. (There may be more in both sets, esp the 3600s, those are just the confirmed ranges.) 1
MVTArider Posted May 15, 2021 Report Posted May 15, 2021 Some photos and observations from my first visit to Denver! As of April 2021 RTD is still running at reduced service levels systemwide. Vehicle capacity limits are also in place for social distancing due to the Pandemic. (Approx. 15 riders on a standard bus, 20 on a larger bus, 30 per rail car) I'm not exactly sure how many routes are fully suspended. FreeMetroRide, FF2-FF5, and some express service are suspended for sure. Some light rail services are also suspended, however all lines and stations still receive service, there's just not the overlap of 2-3 lines at several stations as normal operations would see. For fleet news; 29 2018-2019? Siemens SD-160 are in service. These are numbered in the 3xx range following the existing 3xx SD-160s. I'm not sure what the exact number range is on them. More MCI D4500CT units in the Flatiron Flyer livery have been added with a 2019 order. Possibly 3661-3674 for range. 3662 is 1M8PDMNAXLP015596 which would fit that range hypothesis if the fleet numbers are sequential with the VINs in the list. 655x+ are 2020 Gillig LF 40' in the new RTD livery. I don't know what 6501-6549 are for certain as I did not spot anything in that range. I would guess they are also Gillig LF 40' though some could be a 2019 order instead. Despite the reduced service levels, older equipment was still running. I saw SD100s 102, 103, 104 in service. All LRVs have been refurbished in house to incorporate more mobility device and bicycle space at the ends of the cars. This was done by removing one row of seats and creating a large open space. Several of the 5134-5236 series 2006/2007 Low Floors were running. XD60 were a common sight on the 0 and a few other busy local routes. Free MallRide is still operating at high frequency. Ridership was busy during the afternoon but I don't think the buses were getting as full as they typically would. They also were not running at the 'every light cycle' frequency during the peaks. Still every 3-4 minutes though. The BYDs seem to be holding up alright. I did not see any issues with them aside from some with peeling paint on the seal under the 'destination' window. Some random pics: Regular route bus action, Gilligs galore and XD60; BYD action; Motorcoach activity, I mostly covered these in Boulder as there just wasn't much to be spotted downtown with reduced express operation. And the light rail; I did get some photos of the commuter rail while at Union and riding to/from DEN. Those are on my Flickr along with several other RTD shots in this album if interested. Special operations: Englewood 'Trolley' is a free shuttle route funded by the municipality connecting various points of interest in Englewood, CO to Englewood Station. Initially it was operated with some 'trolley' buses. (hence the name) However in more recent years they decided to go with cheaper vehicle replacements and now run these jumbo cutaways. I think we have officially reached the farthest one can get from a legit PCC streetcar on one of these 'trolley' routes Boulder (as mentioned in previous posts) has some movement themed bus routes. HOP, SKIP, JUMP, BOUND, BOLT, DASH. A few of them still carry special livery reflecting the route name and corridor. HOP is not an RTD route but is funded directly by the City of Boulder and operated by VIA Mobility. From observations the Boulder HOP fleet currently consists of Gillig LF 29' from 2004 and 2017, and at least one ARBOC Spirit of Liberty unit. The HOP fleet is due for a makeover very soon as Boulder places three new 2021 Proterras into service. (article) 4
skyline Posted August 19, 2021 Report Posted August 19, 2021 (edited) For our Light Rail Vehicles: Our SD-100 vehicles are numbered 101-149, delivered between 1993 and 2002 We have 2 different variations of the SD-160. I personally refer to them as the 200 and 300 Series The 200s are numbered 201-322 (I think), and the 300s are numbered, 323-352 The main difference are the drivetrain, the interiors, lighting, and the LED Destination boards For our 6500 Series Gilligs 6501-6578 are 2020 models, and -79 and -80 are 2021. We should have about 106 new busses coming in. Those busses are replacing the 5000s so it should be 5001-5187 that would be retired by 2024. I know that Boulder HOP only has 1 Arboc SOL I have a document of Boulder HOP's fleet. Busses 1-13 are Collines RE-185D busses, some of them are from 1994, and I'm unsure of the rest 14-20 are 2004 Gillig LF 29's (Number 15 received an EV conversion in 2019) 21-24 are from between 2009 and 2010, I'm not sure exactly what year. 25 is the Arboc 26-29 are the 2017 Gilligs And 30-32 are the 3 Proterras. For RTD's 1400 Gillig HEVs All have been retired except for 1405, 1407, and 1409 out of Boulder Division, they're running CTN routes temporarily I also have a pretty good idea of who operates what in Boulder FF1 and FF3 are Platte Division. I've like 75% sure that the rest are Boulder Regional: BOLT, NB, AB, and GS are all Boulder Division Route Y is First Transit I believe CTN Local: SKIP and DASH are Boulder Division JUMP and BOUND are First Transit Longmont Local Routes: If I'm not mistaken, all of the 2xx Routes are First Longmont as well. But I'm only 75% sure about that - Jackson Edited August 22, 2021 by skyline Added Boulder HOP fleet information 1
MountainWizard Posted August 30, 2021 Report Posted August 30, 2021 A few notes to recent posts regarding RTD Denver. The Flatiron Flyer did get 14 new MCI buses 3661-3674. 3658 has been retired due to an accident. Number 3660 was skipped. Prior order was 3601-3659. 3601-3645 are currently based in the Boulder Yard and 3646-3674 are based in the Platte Yard. I believe all nine 1400s (1401-1409) have been retired. A delivery of 80 new buses (Gillig LF 40' ) was received late 2020, number 6501-6580. These were two orders arriving at nearly the same time. The first order placed in 2019 and delivered in Oct 2020 was 6501-6546. Vin #s are consecutive starting with 15GGD2715L3194775. The second order placed in early 2020 and delivered Nov 2020 was 6547-6580. Vin #s are consecutive starting with 15GGD2718L3195502. There is a gap in Vin's between 6546 and 6547 (the two orders). 6501-6563 are 2020 (according their Vins, 10th position is L) and 6564-6580 are 2021 (according their Vins, 10th position is M). All 80 were given to sub-contractors. 6501-6522 was given to Transdev. 6523-6538 and 6546-6580 was given to First Transit Denver. 6539-6545 was given to First Transit Commerce City. 2005 Gillig's 5001-5103 have all been retired. 5104-5265 are still in service expect for 5111 and 5265 which were involved in accidents. Light Rail vehicles. #101-149 are Siemens SD100 from 1993-2001. #201-268 are Siemens SD160 from 2006-2008. #269-323 are Siemens SD160 from 2011-2012. #324-352 are Siemens SD160 from 2018-2020. 1 1
MountainWizard Posted September 1, 2021 Report Posted September 1, 2021 I have attached two photos. The first one is of #6559 showing off the new paint scheme. All new buses #6501-6580 are painted like this, plus all future buses. Not sure if they are going to re-paint any of the existing fleet. The 2nd picture is of #3658 sitting in the Platte Yard. It tried to go under an overpass that was too low and the front top was sheared off (the front is to the right). They have stripped the rest of the bus of all parts, except for the frame. 2 1
skyline Posted September 5, 2021 Report Posted September 5, 2021 (edited) I know for certain that 1401-1404 have been retired, I spotted those in Platte Retirement about a month ago. However 1405-1409 have recently been in service at Boulder Division (Except 1406) 1405 recently travelled around a lot of Denver going up to GVR before heading down the Parker, I lost track of the bus there and don't know where it is A couple months ago, 1406 was seen on Interstate-25 North so presumably it was sold off as it continued on the interstate well past E-470 1407 was recently seen at Platte Division, however I saw it on CTN just a couple weeks prior. 1408 is on the SKIP today And 1409 is currently at Boulder Division as far as I can tell *1409 was on the SKIP today as well And a couple of the 1400s are still on EM's roster even though EM doesn't currently have any there, but that info is a couple months old. Edited September 6, 2021 by skyline Added information about Fleet #1409
skyline Posted September 11, 2021 Report Posted September 11, 2021 1405's resurfaced! It's been operating on Route SKIP since the service changes a couple days ago. So we've got that mystery solved.
skyline Posted September 11, 2021 Report Posted September 11, 2021 Recently, I posted about which routes operate out of which divisions. But ever since the September Service changes, It's been more complicated to identify which routes operate where as some most definitely Boulder Division routes like CTN's DASH has been seen with FT 5100 and 5200 Series Gilligs. So I'll keep updating this forum with the most up to date information about RTD's Bus Routes

I highly recommend it, there's a lot of very helpful information. The app also supports bus tracking in Vancouver, the Seattle Area, the Portland Area, Spokane, the Bay Area, Minneapolis, the DMV, Philadelphia, and New England

Just thought I'd ask i believe there are only 2 left in service the 5104 is running route 93L today and the 5105 was last seen yesterday running route 49 everything after are 2006 models On 9/5/2021 at 9:53 AM, skyline said: I know for certain that 1401-1404 have been retired, I spotted those in Platte Retirement about a month ago. 1408 hast seen a route in 2 months i believe it got retired

Link8451 Posted December 22, 2021 Report Posted December 22, 2021 does anyone know of any other instances of this on other routes i caught a Gillig low floor operating the last trip to Longmont which is usually run by MCI's Edit: i suspect this is happening due to the driver shortage
