Route Details

The routing of Route 316

Route 316 was a Communibus route that operated in the Lowertown and Sandy Hill communities of Downtown Ottawa. On September 3rd, 1996, this route was originally planned to be cancelled due to low ridership, however, with a few changes, OC Transpo managed to increase ridership on the route.

History

June 26th, 1994

  • New Communibus route operating between Sandy Hill and downtown serving the Rideau Centre, Bank Street, Elgin Street and Jack Purcell Centre. It operates during the daytime only, Monday to Saturday. It will operate similarly to Route 16, providing a new accessible service to customers.

April 23rd, 1995

  • Buses that currently sign "Jack Purcell” will instead sign ‘Elgin/Gladstone" starting April 24. This new destination name is more popular and meaningful to riders.

July 24th, 1996

  • Will have a new routing. It will travel straight along Chapel to Rideau (not along Laurier or Cumberland), then Rideau, Wellington to Bank (not on Queen), then Bank, Gladstone, Cartier and Somerset to Bank in a 1-way loop (no service on Lisgar or Elgin).
  • Service will operate every 60 minutes Monday to Saturday.

April 6th, 1997

  • Will travel on Queen, instead of Wellington, between Bank and Elgin.

June 15th, 1998

  • Will be expanded to serve the local community west of Bank Street, including Saint Vincent Hospital and the Good Companions Centre, to LeBreton Station.
  • Customers who board in the Gladstone/Cartier area should check the bus destination sign to confirm its direction of travel.
  • Buses signed SANDY HILL will travel north on Bank Street to the Rideau Centre and Sandy Hill, buses signed LEBRETON will travel west along Somerset, south on Booth to Gladstone, to Preston and LeBreton Station.

June 20th, 1999

  • Will be removed from Booth between Poplar and Gladstone to travel via Poplar, Rochester and Gladstone to its current routing. Buses will follow the opposite routing in the other direction.

June 27th, 2004

  • Extended to provide service to Pretoria and Metcalfe, service to St. Vincent Hospital will be removed.

June 24th, 2007

  • On weekdays, the last trip from LeBreton to the Rideau Centre will be cancelled as well as the last two trips from the Rideau Centre to LeBreton.
  • Service between the Rideau Centre and Sandy Hill will be maintained.

August 31st, 2008

  • Route will be shortened to travel from Sandy Hill to the Rideau Centre to improve service efficiency.
  • The western portion of Route 316, from LeBreton to Cartier and Somerset, will be provided by new Route 153.
  • The section of Route 316 that serves Elgin, Pretoria, Metcalfe and Argyle will only be served by Route 6, Monday to Friday.
  • Route 316 will be connected with Route 6 at the Rideau Centre on weekdays, so that customers can remain on the bus and continue to have service to downtown and Elgin Street. Additionally, customers will benefit from a new direct connection to Carling, the Civic Hospital, Parkdale and Tunney’s Pasture.

September 4th, 2011

  • Route is cancelled due to the unnecessary need of the route since the fleet was already 100% accessible. Some customers may be required to walk farther.
  • Alternative service options include Routes 5, 7, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
