The contractors for Southeast and BRT are different, I think. Not sure how easy that would be.

No, they are the same contractor. Miller now operates Viva as well as YRT Southeast.

The operations of both divisions are bundled into one contract.

The planned frequency adjustments for Viva Blue, Viva Purple/Purple A and Viva Orange for September 3rd are postponed. Noted down below:

Frequency and some schedule changes previously planned for Viva blue, purple/purple A and orange in September 2023 are being postponed until further notice.

There will be no changes for Viva blue, purple/purple A and orange at this time, with the exception of some schedule changes for Viva blue on Sundays/holidays.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Final comments:

I still will keep the original comments that were planned for September 2023 in my original post for those that are still interested in reading what the planned ones are.

Out of all honesty, I don't think anyone would really notice the frequency change if it was implemented. Especially when Blue still maintains frequent service of every 15 minutes or better north of Bernard.

Viva Pink is still under review, but I think it will most likely replace Purple A once York University Markham Campus opens up for student enrolment. Scheduled for Spring 2024 at the time of writing. If there is a lot of demand, Unionville Go Station transit loop is nearby in case cover buses or trippers need to be added to meet ridership demand.

I have said for years that the Pink should operate Finch to RHC then to McCowan Road via HWY 7 and Enterprise. This way it can connect on both sides with the Purple that should just stay on 7. Pink should also operate all day, 7 days a week. I have also suggested that the Blue should operate express between Finch and RHC and then all passengers traveling in between can take the Pink service.

I would agree with you on that regarding Pink should simply replace Purple A and operate the Enterprise branch. Which would bring it to 7 days/week operation, at the same time, Finch Go extension would only be provided during peak periods. All other times, it would terminate at Richmond Hill Centre.

Considering that Blue operates pretty frequently south of Bernard to handle transfers from other routes at Richmond Hill Centre.

Right now, I don't think any major changes will happen until the next annual service plan in a few months.

Route 361 Nashville Express has debuted yesterday (September 5th). Operating with 4 buses during the peak periods.

For anyone wondering what the debut units are:

AM peak period: 1424, 1427, 1432, 1706

PM peak period: 1511, 1702, 1703, 1817

Operated by Southwest Division.

Final comments:

Four buses operating on 361 to provide a frequency of every 27 minutes. Express fares are no longer required which the premium fare was eliminated today for all 300 series routes.

It is more of the challenge from Barons Street/Major Mackenzie Drive to Highway 407 Station via Huntington that may be a bigger challenge since the total scheduled time is 1 hour and 3 minutes.

Versus 361 Nashville Express to Barons Street/Major Mackenzie Drive, it only takes around 33 minutes. Which it is more intended to cover a transit desert along with being a trial to see if there is any demand or interest for transit service in the Vaughan Enterprise Zone. Especially trying to provide more coverage to areas that currently don't have service.

This email is a follow-up to your concern regarding York Region Transit (YRT) Route 361 – Nashville Express.

YRT is currently reviewing the potential of restructuring Route 361 in the future to service businesses along Highway 50 and Trade Valley Drive. The restructure will be dependent on budget availability, infrastructure improvements, and maintenance agreements. YRT is working with the City of Vaughan to improve infrastructure in the area which would allow for additional transit service to be introduced. YRT is also working with Brampton Transit to identify improvements to cross-boundary service integration.

Your feedback regarding this request has been documented in our tracking system for future consideration as part of the annual planning process.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, and providing us the opportunity to review and respond to this matter. Should you have any further questions we can address for you, please feel free to contact us again.

A report has come up regarding advancing environmental assessments or EA for short along with engineering work along specific corridors.

Here is the list:

  • Jane St from Hwy 7 to Major Mac
  • Enterprise Blvd from Birchmount to Kennedy
  • Kennedy from YMCA to Hwy 7
  • Hwy 7 from Kennedy to McCowan

Link to the report here:

https://yorkpublishing.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=41060

If the link doesn't work or removed, I have also attached the report for recordkeeping/reference.

Final comments:

The request to advance the environmental assessment is more to determine the impacts which would be for Jane Street between Highway 7 and Major Mac. Considering it is a higher ridership corridor because of Canada's Wonderland with Route 20 Jane and 720 Jane.

Enterprise Boulevard from Birchmount to Kennedy, Kennedy from YMCA Boulevard to Highway 7 and Highway 7 from Kennedy to McCowan is in the engineering phase. I know that Kennedy BRT is planned for construction in 2026 pending available funding.

Now if YRT only had funding to actually provide frequent service beyond the expensive bus rapid transit infrastructure, maybe it will workout.

Forgot to share earlier. York Region Transit is opting into the provincial fare integration program between YRT and TTC. Lasting two years which is written until March 31, 2026 to coincide with the provincial budget cycle. Along with a budgeted amount of losses that will be covered between $8 million to $9 million dollars annually.

At the time of writing, there is no start date yet other than early 2024.

Link attached here: https://yorkpublishing.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=41493

If there is a problem with the link, I have also attached the report for reference.

Final comments:

York Region Transit has co-fare agreements with other 905 transit agencies as long as there is time remaining on the transfer along with Go Transit. Allowing transfers between 905 system and Go Transit at no additional charge especially with the shift to Presto to receive the discount.

I can see the fare integration beneficial especially if transferring from the subway station to continue north of Steeles Avenue or Highway 7 if on the Vaughan side of Line 1.

Does anyone have a list of which 18xx Xcelsiors have the Gemini seats?
Was it a retrofit (or delivered with them) to see if the agency likes this type of seat then all subsequent orders went back to the Insight?

The list of units with the InSight seats vs Gemini seats are on the Wiki page for the fleet.

The second half of the 2018 order was delivered from the factory with the Gemini seats. I'm not certain why the change; I've variously heard either it was due to a shortage so they got available Gemini seats swapped in to allow for faster delivery; a production error; or was simply testing them out (this was the same time TTC switched to Gemini seating on the 31xx LFS and 34xx LFS HEV).

December 2023 is the final month that York Region Transit will be selling monthly passes. December 14th is the final day for December 2023 monthly passes.

Effective January 1, 2024, fare capping will instead be utilized to ensure that passengers don't pay more than a monthly pass only available via Presto card either physical or digital card will count towards the fare cap.

Breakdown for monthly capping:

  • Adult: 40 one-way trips
  • Youth: 39 one-way trips
  • Seniors/Child: 28 one-way trips

Transfers within the two hour period, companion fares along with coming from trips that don't start at York Region Transit first will not count towards the cap. Only trips that start on-board a YRT/Viva bus will count with the exception for TTC buses that operate north of Steeles Avenue.

Link here: https://www.yrt.ca/en/fares-and-passes/fare-capping-program.aspx

Final comments:

I think it is difficult for some people to purchase a $156 adult monthly pass considering that you don't know how much or little you will use. Since travel patterns do change from month to month such as December if being on break during the holidays. Versus fare caps paying only when you use it.

Transit Assistance Program or TAP for short has been piloting the fare cap system with free rides after 40 one-way trips. The difference with TAP is only a limited amount of participants who meet the program requirements along with agreeing to take part in surveys from time to time. The fare discount is 50 percent off adult fares with a Presto card which the Presto card loaded with the concession is provided.

Final comments:

The main focus is the rebranding of existing express routes (91E Bayview Limited Express/720 Jane Express/760 Vaughan Mills/Wonderland) into the 300 series to be better consistent with the existing Route 300 series routes. Back when the Route 300 series routes were more marketed as premium express via Highway 407.

98E Yonge Express was down to one trip. Only a matter of time before it was eliminated. Especially when most passengers have shifted to Viva Blue which provides more frequent service between Finch Go and Bernard/Newmarket Bus Terminal. Needing to match supply with demand.
