They still indicate that the 7000s are the last non-electric batch but I wonder what can replace the 9000s artics which are near the end of life.

And who said they are at the end of life?

I always assumed the TTC considered artic lifespan to be 12 years.

That's not just for artics, that is their intended lifespan for everything they have, hence why the 8100s and 8300s are being retired now.

I have often heard 15 quoted as the lifespan for the articulation joint, but I am not clear as to how accurate that is, as I have been in European cities (with worse maintenance than ours) where artics have lasted more than 20 years in service. If the TTC can't find a suitable replacement for the 9000s, there is nothing that would stop them from keeping them going longer except for political interference. The fact that they are nixing the 81s and 83s while keeping the notoriously unreliable NG hybrids going absolutely smacks of political interference.

Unless we have a reliable source from a mech that worked on the artics to chime in. We don't know what they conditions are. All we know is there is no plan to retire the artics with almost all except a handful (single digit count) that has been in regular in the recent month. So they are probably still in good shape. The planned retirement is probably still near the end of the decade so we'll probably see them for another 5 years.

they probably got another 5 years left in them or so but if i were to guess they'd probably be replaced by the xe60s

TTC considers all buses to have 18 year lifespans, this is what a mechanic told me at Hillcrest today

They moved to a 12 year replacement cycle a few years ago for conventional 40-footers but before then I had thought they already bumped it down to 12 for artics after their Orion 3 experience.

This is starting to get really far off topic, but to provide answers/context to the various discussions above...

12 years seems to be the generally quoted number for articulated joints in North America. But I think like all things, that range depends heavily on usage and maintenance.

The only definitive word on upcoming retirements that I've seen recently (that weren't word-of-mouth from various "sources") was that the TTC awarded a contract to Langilles for the disposal of specific quantities and types of buses for the next 5 years, which took effect on March 31 this year. The contract includes all of the remaining Orion VII buses (old and NG, hybrid and diesel) plus 250 Nova LFS buses from 2015-17 model years. The "Nova Low-Floor Articulated" models were noted as "to be sold due to collision only", which means there are none currently scheduled to be retired within the next 5 years (or until at least 2029).

Can't wait for the Novas to be gone. But no point getting too happy , because TTC will just order more of them.

I think we'll have a situation of too many good Diesels retiring and EV buses not performing as then should. A nice combination of that will have TTC leasing buses like the 1990s. Can't wait!

The XE40s were at Eglinton to test the chargers that were installed there.

Birchmount is the next one in line to get chargers iirc.

3715 kept “turning off” on 64 Main yesterday. The bus completely screwed itself over jn one of the worst possible places, Gerrard and Main Intersection blocking one lane of traffic on gerrard and one on Main (drivers had to go straight through the turning lane). Supervisor attended and I tracked it an hour later and it was back in service already.

If 3715 was in such bad shape, I am amazed that it managed to make it up the steep hill on southwood on the way back to Main Station. 😆
