We know the video was taken sometime between 1982 to 1986 because the GM Artics only ran for OC Transpo for that long.

I know these GM artics were a trial sponsored by the Government of Ontario, but I wonder what OC's rationale for not keeping them beyond 4 years was given the legendary service of the New Look fleet? I wonder whether  GM would have built more units beyond the initial 60 some OC, the TTC and Mississauga were given? Instead both OC and the TTC opted for the Hungarian Ikaruses, which we all know ended up being pieces of junk, yet Mississauga kept their GM artics.

I remember when 9751 was in service, and I got to ride it once.  I was mainly used on low-ridership routes such as 123 and 147, and it was eventually replaced by cutaways such as 9750, 9899 and 2601.  It was listed for sale on the CUTA classifieds in 2001 (http://web.archive.org/web/20010713204216/http://www.cutaactu.ca:80/OCTranspoBusAd.htm), but it was still on OC Transpo property in May 2002 when I took these two very-low-quality photos of the bus.  There's a thread discussing the bus here: https://cptdb.ca/topic/754-oc-9751/

Haha, it’s funny how quickly that thread got off topic, nevertheless, thank you. It seems like it was, but was it only the one bought by OC Transpo?

Yes, although OC Transpo demoed an EZ-Rider Max in 2008.  Apparently, that didn't lead to anything either...

I have it on reasonably good authority from the mechanics that preceded me, that the legendary reliability of the new look didn’t particularly translate to the GM artic.

In toronto anyway, they were happy to see them go.

Indeed. They were extremely hard on fuel and they were downright dangerous in the snow (on grades especially). They were always pulled off the road during snow storms.

The whole 8222 project was a flop. That bus was nearly impossible to keep in revenue service from day to day due to maintenance issues.

The Orion-Ikaruses certainly had many issues as well but they were a better performing bus overall than the GM 60's. The Ontario government forced the Ikaruses on Ottawa and Toronto since Orion was an Ontario crown corporation at that time and the gov't was giving a large subsidy for bus purchases. Despite that, OCT had given the 1986/87 60 foot bus order to Volvo but they pulled out of the NA bus market. OC had also tested Vanhool and Neoplan artics but (probably under gov't of Ontario pressure) wound up buying more Ikaruses.

I only ever spotted 9751 with my own eyes once and that was for about all of 10 seconds. I was driving northbound on Bank waiting at the light at Johnston when it came southbound down during onto Johnston on what is now old route #1 / current route #6.

In any event I'm glad that the 8222 project happened. I remember when I spotted 8222 for the first time. I was walking north on Metcalfe at Laurier and at Metcalfe and Albert on passes through a bus that I hadn't seen on Ottawa streets in close to 20 years. I thought to myself 'OMG they've brought them back?' thinking maybe some of them had been in storage all these years. Fortunately I was also able to snag a handful of rides on it for the 18 months or so it was in service. I think the original plan was to have only 1 parts donor bus and to bring 2 of the ex-HSRs into revenue service.

Hello everyone,

I found out recently that OC Transpo once had several 99’ Gillig Phantom buses and was wondering if anyone had any photos,

Thanks

OC Transpo never had Gillig Phantoms.

OC Transpo & STO Classics next to each other. Photo taken sometime during the 2000s

This was taken sometime after 2007 but before 2010. STO retrofitted their fishbowls and classics with Balios or MegaMAX: 3000 destination signs in 2007, and OC got rid of the GM/MCI Classics in 2009 (if I'm not mistaken)

I can tell you that this was definitely taken in 2010. See that Chez 106 ad on the side? That specific ad came out in 2010. I know because I remember seeing that exact bus with the same ad.

Also, OC retired them in 2010. The last three were 9115, 8941, and 8942.

GMs were all retired by 2008, except for 8792. That bus was retired and used as a shuttle bus in October 2009, but it officially got retired in December.

84xxs got retired 2004-2005. The 85xx buses got retired 2005-2007. The 87xx buses got retired 2004-2009. 8792 was the only bus to survive the strike, and last until the end of 2009.

I think that's a D40, has the curve at the rear unlike the Orion's straight boxy rear.

The bus in the middle is a 1992 Orion V. There is no D40 in that picture....

I found this photo on ESBDave's Fotki page showing GM bus 7918 shortly after delivery in 1979.  It is signed for route 24 Express with a window sign set to Tanglewood.  The window signs fell into disuse shortly after this time, as the main rollsigns were updated to show the destination neighbourhoods in around 1980.

This photo was taken by Bob Hussey and is being used for educational purposes only.

Interestingly, route 24 never served Tanglewood.  The route was created in November 1972 to serve Beacon Hill North in Gloucester Township, retained its route number during the 1980s renumberings, and was renumbered Connexion route 224 in December 2016.  Tanglewood is in Nepean and is currently served by local route 83.  Back in 1979, the neighbourhood was served by regular route 96, peak-period route 20 and Sunday route C5.
