Eglinton West Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 1300 Eglinton Avenue West in the centre median of the Allen Road expressway offramp partially spanning the underside of Eglinton Avenue West.
This station will be renamed Cedarvale (for the nearby neighbourhood) when the Eglinton Crosstown LRT opens in 2021. In an effort to simplify and improve wayfinding, new stations with names similar to existing stations were renamed. Allen (for Allen Road) was also a contender.
Station description
The architect that designed the station was Arthur Erickson Architectural Corporation and Clifford & Lawrie.[1] The station's architecture comprised of a large glass enclosed main entrance building on the north side of Eglinton Avenue West with a wraparound bus roadway and terminal in between the onramp and offramp of Allen Road. The main entrance building features a large concrete roof overhang with two large cube light boxes attached to it bearing the station name. It also features a long wide brick pathway leading to the station entrance. The glass enclosed main entrance building acts as a station entrance as well as a waiting area for passengers connecting to surface routes. The building roof has skylights to let in natural sunlight.
Passengers can connect to all bus routes inside the station bus terminal except for 332 Eglinton West, which can be boarded at the bus stop just outside the main entrance. Buses enter the station bus terminal through a roadway beside the southbound Allen Road offramp.
Line 1 platforms
Subway platform level is situated in the centre median of the Allen Road ramps and there are elevators, escalators, and stairs inside the main entrance that lead to an intermediate concourse. The intermediate concourse bridges across the subway tracks with escalators and stairs leading down to the side platforms. The southern part of the platform concourse is enclosed as the Allen Road expressway ends, and it features two identical floor-to-ceiling porcelain enamel on steel murals by Gerald Zeldin called "Summertime Street Car".[2] The northern part of the platform has windows lining the sides of the entire platform with concrete support pillars and benches placed at regular intervals. The northern section of the platform also features a green roof running down the length of the platform roof. Built in 2009 due to constant roof leaks, it was the first green roof implementation on a Toronto Transit Commission subway station.[3]
Line 5 platforms
Set to open in 2021, LRT platform level is located under Eglinton Anvenue just north of the subway platforms. Trains will run alongside a centre platform. The LRT and subway platforms are connected by a lower concourse and an upper concourse. The lower concourse is level with the subway platforms.
