Warden Station is a rapid transit station and bus terminal operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 701 Warden Avenue at the southeast corner of the intersection of Warden Avenue and St Clair Avenue East.
History
Warden Station served as the eastern terminus of the Bloor-Danforth subway when it was extended into Scarborough in 1968. It opened to the public on May 10, 1968 along with the opening of Islington Station, the new western terminus. As both Islington Station and Warden Station were constructed and opened at the same time, these stations share very similar terminus station architectural features. A notable similarity is the bus terminal building which has a separated bus platform bay for each TTC route that serviced the station. Each bus bay is accessed by a flight of stairs from the bus concourse level.
The TTC still used zone fares at the time, but decided to make the whole subway system Zone 1 and have connecting buses outside of Zone 1 as Zone 2. Warden's bus terminal, like the other stations on the extension, was built outside of the fare paid area. It has since been incorporated into the fare paid area after the TTC abandoned fare zones within Metro Toronto. Kennedy Station became the new eastern terminus when the Bloor-Danforth subway was further extended in 1980 but Warden Station still remains as a major transfer point for subway passengers connecting to bus routes that serve Scarborough.
Station Description
The station architecture is comprised of four levels: street entrance level, an underground concourse and collector's booth level, a bus concourse level, and subway platform level.
The main entrance for the station is located on the east side of Warden Avenue just south of St Clair Avenue East. A second entrance is at the station's Passenger Pick up and Drop off which is located between the station bus terminal and the subway platforms. The Passenger Pick up and Drop off can be accessed by a roadway off St Clair Avenue East and has parking spaces and a taxi stand. Warden Station also has two parking lots which are situated on the north and south sides of the station. The north parking lot, which is at the northwest corner of Warden Avenue at St Clair Avenue East, has 920 parking spaces while the south parking lot has 151 parking spaces. There is a covered walkway that spans over Massey Creek which provides a connection between the station and the north parking lot.
There are stairs inside the main entrance which lead to the concourse/collector level. Inside the fare-paid area of the concourse, there are stairs that provide access to the separated bus platform bays for the TTC routes that serve the station. This station is not accessible, however, there are stairs and/or escalators that connect between the street, concourse and the bus and subway platform levels. Only stairs connect between the bus concourse and the bus platform levels.
