York University Station is a rapid transit station owned and operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The station is located at 120 Ian MacDonald Boulevard in the York University Keele Campus grounds.
Station description
The entrance to the station is a crescent shaped steel and fritted glass amphitheatre with flared ends located at the east end of the Harry W. Arthurs Common. The aluminum "cool roof" design has high solar reflectance and absorbs little heat. The entrances are on either end of the building and there a flowing sloped steps descending towards the bend. There is an entrance at this level as well. Inside, stairs lead to a triangular shaped lower concourse. The concourse stretches east and is divided into unpaid and paid areas. Beyond the fare gates is access to platform level via stairs, escalators and an elevator near the centre.
The platform level is a centre platform design with tracks on either side. Stairs, escalators and an elevator are spread along the centre leading to the lower concourse. The ceiling over the platform is above the concourse leading to open space for most of the platform. Station emergency exits located at either end of the platform lead up to the surface in front of the Schulich School of Business building and the Provincial Archives Building and Research Tower. The exit structures will be clad in opaque glass panels and feature green roofs.
The colour scheme for the station is mainly cold and metallic. Walls in the main entrance area and lower concourse are clad in white ceramic wall panels. Bare concrete pillars are used in the lower concourse and at platform level. Flooring throughout the station is in grey terrazzo and stairs are in dark granite.
The station's artwork, developed by Jason Bruges Studio, will be on the walls that extend from the ceiling over the tracks to the concourse level. These walls will be covered in an array of 100x100mm LCD screens which will display patterns of light as they can change tone between white and black. The light patterns will be determined by movements in air created by the trains and people. The working title for this piece is Piston Effect.
