This route services Runnymede Road north of Bloor Street. It also provides service on several local streets in the Mount Dennis community. The southern terminal is Runnymede Station and the northern terminal is Industry Street looping around TTC's Mount Dennis bus garage for its one branch, 71.

History
- January 7, 2001 - All service south of Runnymede Station is replaced with the new 77 Swansea route.
- November 23, 2008 - Moved to newly-opened Mount Dennis Division. Branch 71B is extended northwest along Industry Street to serve and loop around the Mount Dennis bus garage. The route is also modified to operate via north on Todd Baylis Boulevard and south on Trethewey Drive to Black Creek Drive. Service hours on branch 71B to Industry Street is expanded to operate 7 days a week whenever the subway is open.
- June 19, 2011 - Route made wheelchair accessible with bike racks.
- June 22, 2014 - Due to a system-wide reorganization of route branch designations, branch 71 to St Clair is redesignated 71A.
- October 13, 2019 - As part of the Junction Area Study, service on branch 71A is eliminated and replaced with the new 189 Stockyards
route. Branch 71B to Industry Street is redesignated 71.
- March 28, 2021 - This route was transferred to Queensway upon the opening of the brand new McNicoll Division.
- October 8, 2023 - This route was transferred back to Mount Dennis Division.
Overnight Service
Overnight service is not provided, however, the route operates until 1:00 AM every day.
