Summerhill Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 16 Shaftesbury Avenue, situated on the north side of Shaftesbury Avenue east of Yonge Street. This station primarily serves the Summerhill community.
History
Summerhill Station is one of the original 12 stations of the Yonge subway which was inaugurated on March 30, 1954.
Station description
The station architecture is comprised of two levels: street entrance level and platform level. The only entrance to the station is located on the north side of Shaftesbury Avenue east of Yonge Street. The main entrance takes the form of a brick building with tinted windows lining the collector's booth area. Inside the entrance building is the collector's booth and inside the fare paid area is stairs leading down to platform level.
Passengers can connect to the 97 Yonge and 320 Yonge buses at the bus stops on Yonge Street and Shaftesbury Avenue as the station has no bus terminal.
When trains were travelling between Summerhill and St. Clair Stations, subways ran through an open-cut section between Summerhill Avenue and Pleasant Boulevard prior to the 1980s. Since then, it has been gradually covered over to make way for parking lots, tennis courts, and an apartment building. Signs of this previously open-cut section of track can be noticed from the upward sloping sides and the occasional tree when looking out the front of the subway train. Signs can also be seen on street level such as the green fence lining both sides of Summerhill Avenue and the south side of Woodlawn Avenue East. This highlights the presence of a bridge than once spanned over the open-cut section. In addition, south of Summerhill Station, the open-cut section previously ended at Price Street but it was later covered up to Rowanwood Avenue in 2002 to make way for a parking lot.
Easier Access
As part of the Easier Access Program, two new elevators will be installed at Summerhill Station to provide barrier-free access between street level and the subway platforms. The main entrance building on Shaftesbury Avenue will also be completely redesigned to house the elevator shafts, and incorporate the new accessible fare gates and automatic sliding doors. The elevators, which are within the fare-paid area will be located on the south and west side of the building, and the entrance doorway and fare line will be shifted to the east side.[1]
Construction at the station began in the fall of 2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2024.[2]
