Broadview Station is a rapid transit station and bus/streetcar terminal operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 769 Broadview Avenue one block north of Danforth Avenue.
History
Broadview Station opened with the original Bloor-Danforth subway line on February 26, 1966.
Station description
The main entrance is accessed by doors which open onto the east side of Broadview Avenue. Inside the main entrance, there is the collector's booth and fare gates and beyond the fare-paid line is the station bus and streetcar terminal. The bus and streetcar terminal features 5 bus bays stretching along the south side of the station property and two separated streetcar platforms with their own track. To access the streetcar platform for the 505 Dundas streetcar, passengers must cross over the tracks used by the 504 King streetcar. Connection to 300 Bloor-Danforth night buses can be made at the intersection of Broadview Avenue and Danforth Avenue and to the 322 Coxwell night buses just north of the station at the intersection of Erindale and Broadview Avenues.
In the underground concourse, stairs, escalators, and an elevator provide access between street level and the subway platforms. Stairs from the outdoor bus terminal waiting area, lead directly down to the eastbound and westbound subway platforms. The subway platforms are of the typical Bloor-Danforth style, with white wall tiles and a black trim.
Station expansion
With increasing ridership on the 504 King streetcar and increasing congestion on King Street, reliability on the streetcar route had diminished which prompted the TTC board to identify solutions to this issue. One of the proposed solutions was to expand the streetcar loop at Broadview Station as it had only one streetcar loop serving two streetcar routes.[1] On December 9, 2002, the Commission board approved plans for several improvements to Broadview Station. The plans included expanding the single track loop into double track, construction of an additional bus bay, new elevators, and a second exit from platform level to the bus and streetcar terminal area. Construction was expected to begin mid 2003 and be completed in 2005.[2]
After construction delays, the new elevators began operation in 2006, which officially made Broadview Station accessible. The new second exit stairwell and concourse from the subway platforms to the outdoor bus and streetcar terminal area opened but faced water leak issues and was closed numerous times. The leak was fixed and the exit reopened in 2010.[3]
