Transit Windsor (formerly the Sandwich, Windsor and Amherstburg Railway Company) operates transit service in the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario, Town of LaSalle(Route 25 LaSalle) and a small portion of Tecumseh. Transit Windsor is also unique in that it is one of only a few, if not the only, fixed-route transit agency that operates a frequent fixed transit route across an international border, through the Tunnel Bus service (formerly operated by the Detroit-Canada Tunnel Company) to the Rosa Parks Transit Center in downtown Detroit, Michigan, in the United States, where connections are made with DDOT, SMART (including the Fast rapid transit service), M-1 Rail QLINE and the Detroit People Mover. Transfers can also be made to Tecumseh Transit at Tecumseh Mall in East Windsor. Transit Windsor also services and stores 1-2 Greyhound Canada buses per day.

History

Timeline of important events

This section is incomplete. You can help! [1] [2]

  • 1977 - On November 1, the Sandwich, Windsor and Amherstburg Railway Company becomes Transit Windsor. At the time, the active fleet consisted of 90 transit buses, two suburban buses, three highway coaches and one double-decker bus.
  • 1979 - The old Kildare Road garage is abandoned and torn down to make room for an expansion of a General Motors transmission plant. A portion of the property is temporarily leased back to Transit Windsor until the new administrative offices and garage at 3700 E.C. Row Avenue (since renamed North Service Road East) are dedicated on April 29.
  • 1982 - Transit Windsor took over the Tunnel Bus service, after the tunnel corporation ceased to operate the tunnel service. The buses used to operate the service were sold to an individual in Michigan, who ran a shuttle service for a private college. Eventually some were used for parts to keep the others running before ceasing operations.
  • 1988 - Mascot "Willi" is introduced.
  • 1989 - New fareboxes are installed in August, capable of reporting the number of boarding passengers, passenger types, bus routes and times of day.
  • 1996 - Fort Frances Transit ceases operation and sells two of their Orion Bus Industries Orion II buses to Transit Windsor, which then become their first low-floor buses. They would later be placed into service on the short-lived Devonshire Mall - Silver City Shuttle service in 1998.
  • 2000 - In January, Trip Tickets are introduced, allowing passengers to purchase one-way tickets in sheets of 10 at a discounted rate.
  • 2001 - Bike racks are installed on Transit Windsor's low-floor buses. High-floor buses were never equipped with bike racks as of 2016.
  • 2007 - The new Windsor International Transit Terminal opens.
  • 2016 - On August 24, the Transit Windsor garage receives minor damage from a nearby passing tornado.
  • 2017 - On September 5th, Transit Windsor will be expanding to include the town of LaSalle(Route 25 LaSalle).
  • 2019 - On July 8th, Transit Windsor will start an express route to the towns of Essex, Kingsville and Leamington called the 42.
