Interior layout of 5810-5935 before rebuild.

Toronto Transit Commission 5810-5935 are Can-Car Rail H6 class subway cars built and delivered between 1986 and 1989. All cars have been based out of Greenwood their entire lives, and therefore only provide service on the Bloor-Danforth line. The contract for these cars was awarded on December 30, 1983 at a unit price of $1,147,500. The first cars were completed in February 1986, and after tests and troubleshooting, entered service on May 26, 1987.

Changes from the H5 cars included door threshold and coupler heaters, overhead heating, more PA speakers (14 per car), Brush traction motors, CIR DC motor driven compressor, and interior colour scheme. The H6 cars had a paler interior colour scheme with beige flooring and light orange and off-white seat inserts that alternated throughout the car. The TTC eventually phased out the off-white inserts. One pair, 5840-5841, received brown fibreglass seat inserts in 1999 as a trial, however these have since been replaced during overhaul. The H6 cars would be the last to be delivered without door chimes. They were added to most of the subway fleet between 1993 and 1994.

The entire series was overhauled at Greenwood's shops from circa 2005 to 2008. They had their Motor Alternator sets replaced with Static Converter Units which the TTC found to be more reliable.[1] The most noticeable changes from a passenger perspective are the omission of the black paint around the class lights (some cars have the incandescent lights replaced with LEDs) and the replacement of the padded vinyl inserts with unpadded synthetic inserts. A wheelchair area set up like that on the T1 was also added to the cars.

On May 6, 2010, city council approved the purchase of an additional 186 TR cars which would allow for the replacement of the H6 cars.[2] In 2009, the TTC Staff was approached by a company interested in negotiating a potential purchase of the H5 and H6 cars.[3] The parties involved remained undisclosed until May 2011 when media outlets reported on a visit of Nigerian officials to inspect the TTC's subway system and future surplus H5 and H6 cars. The intention was to use these cars on Lagos' light rail system which is under construction.[4] Ultimately 75 H5 cars were acquired for the project and the remaining H5 cars and all the H6 cars are being scrapped.

It is worth noting that in the last year or two of H6 operation a renumbering or two took place, with one or two cars assuming a new identity and mated to what would be its "normal" mated pair car. An example would be the original 5847 retiring for whatever reason, and 5831 being renumbered 5847 (the second use of this number, or 5847(:2)) and mated to 5846 to run in service. This was possibly done to keep a set in service without making any repairs to a car that has undergone a major failure, thus the car that experienced a major failure would be retired, and a "good" car that was either previously retired or otherwise would be renumbered and mated with the existing married pair car. Known occurrences are noted separately in the Renumbered Units list below.

The final H6 train, composed of cars (from west to east) 5858-5859-5908-5909(:2)-5899-5898, made its farewell run on June 20, 2014 with one full trip along the Bloor-Danforth line in the late morning. The train entered service at approximately 10:00am at Greenwood Station. With that, all the original "H" series cars would be retired from revenue service (though some H1 and H4 cars may live on as work cars).

Renumbered Units

Fleet number Thumbnail Date Serial Division Rebuild Date Notes
5847(:2) 1986-1989 84-75-1463 Greenwood
  • Renumbered from 5831 to 5847(:2) to replace the original 5847(:1). Mated to 5846.
  • 5847 noted in May 2013 as featuring several markings of another subway car[5]. Later confirmed 5847 was a "new" car renumbered from 5831, by serial number and other spotting features[6].
5909(:2) 1986-1989 Greenwood RETIRED
June 20,2014
  • Renumbered from 5893 to 5909(:2) to replace the original 5909(:1). Mated to 5908.
  • 5909 was noted by a CPTDB board member during the retirement run (06-20-2014) with its top bar-code reading 5893 (likely of this car's previous number) instead of 5909 as it would normally read [7]. This renumbering likely took place sometime in 2014 or possibly 2013.
