TheBus, is the public transit provider for Oahu, Hawaii. Paratransit is offered through TheHandi-Van, a shared-ride service for those unable to use fixed-route services provided by TheBus.

History

Administration

Guided by Honolulu Mayor Francis “Frank” Fasi, TheBus began life under Mass Transit Lines (MTL), incorporated on September 20, 1970, an amalgamation of private companies brought under city ownership. Through federal assistance, MTL purchased the private operators Honolulu Rapid Transit & Land Company (HRT), Wahiawa Transportation Company, and Waianae Coast Transportation Company into one publicly owned transportation service.[1] MTL took over operations of HRT on March 1, 1971, serving Downtown Honolulu and surrounding suburbs with any vehicles inherited through the purchase of the company. MTL would purchase and operate Waianae Coast services starting April 1973, and Leeward Bus Company routes starting March 15, 1974.[2]

Following the purchase of the four companies, MTL purchased 50 second-hand GM New Look buses from Dallas Transit System. The Dallas units wore a similar livery to the Ex-HRT buses, painted in silver, salmon, and turquoise. However, these units would eventually be repainted to match the existing fleet.[3]

Operations from MTL were passed to Oahu Transit Services (OTS) in 1992, with Mass Transit Lines being dissolved.

Operations

On September 17, 2007, Oahu Transit Services introduced a ferry service linking Kalaeloa with Aloha Tower Marketplace.[4] The new service was named TheBoat to match the existing branding of TheBus and TheHandi-Van. The ferry service took one hour per sailing, with buses making connections with the ferry at either terminal. The service was terminated on June 1, 2009 after 2 years of service.[5]

On June 30, 2023, the Honolulu Authority for Rail Transportation (HART) began service on Segment 1 of the Skyline rail service between Kapolei and Aloha Stadium.[6] Automated trains run every 10 minutes all day with service between 5:00 am and 7:00 pm on weekdays. Service operates between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm on weekends and holidays.[7] TheBus altered multiple routes along the Skyline route, taking effect the following month to allow patrons to acclimate to the new service patterns.

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, TheBus purchased 17 new battery electric buses which entered service in 2022.[8] Oahu Transit Services aims for a fully electric fleet by the year 2040.[9] In 2023, TheBus temporarily suspended operation of the fleet due to charging issues. The fleet has since returned to service.[10]

Branding

TheBus branding originated under the Mass Transit Lines administration when a rebranding was undertaken on March 1, 1971.[11] This livery consisted of 3 color layers Gold, Yellow, and Orange, starting at the bottom of the bus and working upward below the passenger windows. Alongside this refreshed livery, new uniforms in the style of Hawaiian “Aloha” shirts were introduced.

In 1980, the “tiger stripe” livery was introduced consisting of a gold skirt and three color bands swooping upwards. This livery would become the recognizable livery seen today. In the mid-1980s, Honolulu Mayor Eileen Anderson introduced an updated livery consisting of a grey skirt up to the rub line and thick yellow stripe extending halfway between the rub line and windows. This livery would not last and all buses reverted to the 1980 “tiger stripe” livery.[12]

Between 2002 and 2004, Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris introduced a refreshed livery in an attempt to modernise the fleet. The new livery would consist of a blue skirt and rainbow swoosh matching the style of the existing “tiger stripe” livery.[13] Mayor Harris also implemented new liveries for the Route E bus rapid transit route, called TheTransit, stylized TheTransit and commonly referred to as eTransit. TheTransit buses consisted of New Flyer 60 foot coaches and were painted with black skirts and silver bodies, gaining the nickname silver bullets. These coaches also featured rainbow fades on the rear half of the units. These liveries would not last due to the higher cost of decals and buses ordered post-2004 reverted to the traditional “tiger stripe” scheme.[14]

Popular Culture

Since its inception in 1971, TheBus gained the nickname Frank Fasi’s Limousine Service. Stemming from the lack of free school bus service on the island, many students would catch TheBus to school and formal events. While less prevalent today, many adults still use the term coined in TheBus’ early years.[15]

TheBus was recognised as “America’s Best Transit System” twice by the American Public Transportation Association. APTA awarded this recognition for service between 1994-1995, and 2000-2001.

In an effort to encourage and thank other road drivers for letting buses merge, TheBus began programming "Shaka Signs" on the rear destination board of buses. This special programming is activated when a driver pushes a switch on the side console and cycles for approximately 10 seconds per push. Prior to the sign’s introduction in 2010, operators would stick their hand out of the window to thank other drivers.[16]

Advertising

Due to a ban on billboards by the state legislature in 1926, TheBus does not carry external advertising of any kind. In 2013, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced plans to introduce exterior advertisements on buses, aiming to reduce fares and increase service. However, the proposal was not passed and internal racks remain the only advertising space on buses.[17]

In 2022, TheBus started a safety campaign partnership with Malama Kupuna (care for our elderly) after a passenger was injured due to a motor vehicle accident. [18] Following this partnership, the Honolulu Department for Transportation Services (DTS) and TheBus began applying decals to the rear of buses. These decals call for drivers to drive safely, slow down, and pass buses with caution.[19]
