Saw a very sad looking DE40LFR #6001 on global this morning.

This was a pickup truck that smashed into the bus drivers side corner at 83st and 82 avenue by bonnie doon corner. Drivers corner of bus has repairable damage but will take awhile.

Happened at 2am this morning.

EDMONTON – Three people were taken to hospital early Friday morning after a pickup truck smashed into the side of an Edmonton transit bus just outside the Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre.

According to Global Edmonton, Sherwood Park RCMP chased the pickup into the city, but had called off the pursuit just before the collision. However, the truck continued speeding through the Bonnie Doon area, ultimately colliding with the side of a city bus at Whyte Ave. and 83 St.

The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries and two passengers were also taken in for treatment.

RCMP have not yet released why they were chasing the truck in the first place or what charges the driver might be facing.

EDMONTON — The driver of a pickup truck fleeing police slammed into the side of an Edmonton transit bus, injuring several passengers.

An Edmonton radio station is reporting that the incident unfolded around 1 a.m., when Strathcona County RCMP were involved in a pursuit with the driver of a pickup truck.

According to CHED, police called off the pursuit after chasing the driver into the city's southeast, but continued to follow the pickup.

Shortly after that, the fleeing vehicle collided with an Edmonton transit bus.

The driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital in critical condition with face, head and internal injuries.

Several passengers were assessed at the scene with minor injuries, but two were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries

6001 will be back on the road, eventually. ETS has had other buses with worse damage that have been returned to service (such as the one that slammed into a house, or crashed into a tree). Based on where 6001 was struck, it likely just has some body damage. Combined with the fact that it's a pretty new bus, ETS will most likely invest in repairing the bus. If it were a trolley, GMC, 200 or even a 98 or 99 D40LF that got damaged like this, they would most likely be retired.

I doubt we'll see 6001 back on the road again. From what I saw of it on CTV news just now it looks pretty bad.

The problem with where 6001 was hit is all of the electrics and computer related stuff in that side panel beside the driver. Repairable yes, but it's more than just fixing the frame, and putting in new body panels and windows.

I've heard that as well about engine fires. Put in a new engine and whatever other mechanical stuff. But, if all of the wiring is melted to hell... your in for a lot more work!

I might have a pic somewhere of the electric stuff under that panel. There might also be one by Ken on Barp in Calgary section.

She'll be all right, we have had a few buses in Calgary hit bridges and get half the roof ripped off and there back on the road, but yes all the fuses and vital electronics are in the area of where the truck hit the bus...

The Vancouver E40LFR that was set on fire late in 2007 suffered extensive damage to its vital electronics, and it's being repaired. I would venture that impact damage to this sort of equipment is probably less costly to repair than fire damage.
