GOA transit news, info etc

Recommended Posts

OC Transpo has created a staff report for the Transit Commission on how Transit Scheduling works. This report was created in response to a question that was asked by a Councillor on the Transit Commission at a previous meeting.

The report will give details on:

  • Why scheduels are created in such large lead time
  • Certain scheduling terms used (like deadheading, interlining, etc)
  • Limited discussions bus operator work selection process (Booking)

(If for some reason the above link no longer works, go to this web page, and select the link titled "7.2 OC Transpo Scheduling Process")

The report will be discussed at the Transit Commission meeting on April 11, 2024. This is an Information Report, nothing to approve.

Very sad indeed. My condolences to the individual family. Bus 6518 was the bus involved according to CTV News segment.

Makes me wonder how fast the vehicles were travelling at the time... the bus had decent front end damage but the car looks to have been completely destroyed...

I mean it's also a bus, they weigh like 100x more than a sedan.

OC Transpo bus 8137 went into the ditch on Frank Kenny Road per this tweet attached:

Final comments:

Reminds me of the two double deckers in the 8000 series that ended up on their side a decade ago along Woodroffe near Fallowfield due to the open field.

8022 on December 21, 2012 and 8010 on April 12, 2013.

The DDs are probably sensitive in crosswinds. Then again, so were the beloved GM New Looks; one driver said they were "like a kite".

OC Transpo ridership and fare revenue continues to miss projections:

https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/oc-transpo-misses-ridership-targets-in-first-2-months-of-2024-1.6842748

In the same article, there were an average of 104 undelivered trips out of 8,000 weekday trips.

The three most cancelled routes are:

  • Route 6: 131 trips cancelled
  • Line 2 replacement: 129 trips cancelled
  • Route 12: 110 trips cancelled

43 percent of trips cancelled were due to no operator available. 32 percent of trips were cancelled due to traffic conditions requiring an adjustment.

Final comments:

With fare capping on credit cards to not charge more than a day pass ($11.75) or adult monthly pass ($128.75), there is simply no need to purchase a monthly pass anymore. I know the discussions regarding how some people can't afford the high upfront payment or unsure if they can reach the break-even point to make the cost back.

There is a new transit project in the works that is to concinide with of Stage 2 LRT in order faciliate bus operations in the future once it is open. This project is called "Jeanne d'Arc Blvd Transit Measures"

The City plans to modify the existing intersection of Jeanne d'Arc Blvd at Fortune Drive/Vineyard Drive from a signalized intersection to a roundabout in order to allow buses to turnaround. As well, they are planning to create a bus bay on Jeanne d'Arc Blvd southbound between Fortune Drive/Vineyard Drive and RR174 (presumably to allow buses to lay-up).

OC Transpo's new GTFS-rt feed is now available for developers to begin testing with: https://www.octranspo.com/en/news/article/new-real-time-data-test-feed-available-now/

The feed includes vehicle positions and trip updates, but no service alerts (though it had been previously announced that this would come at a later date).

I haven't seen anything official from OC Transpo, but apparently Ottawa Race Weekend has been able to negitiate with the City (OC Transpo) to have LRT Line 1 on begin service at 5am instead of the usual 8am start time on Sunday, May 26.

Parking, roads, traffic and transit

The organizers of Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend and OC Transpo are pleased to announce that O-Train Line 1 will open at 5 am on Sunday, May 26, to help runners, volunteers and spectators travel to the start line of the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon.

Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend is the biggest multi-day race event in Canada drawing in thousands of out-of-town visitors and 200,000 spectators. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Ottawa’s marathon and participants registered en masse for this milestone event as well as for the half marathon. It is the first time in several years the marathon has reached maximum capacity. With 35,000 runners taking part in Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, runners are encouraged to start off on the right foot by travelling to the event using transit.

During Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, skip traffic, forget about parking downtown and avoid road closures by using O-Train Line 1 to travel to and through the downtown core. With three O-Train stations within 15-minutes of the start line, OC Transpo is the most convenient, accessible and eco-friendly way to get to and from the event safely. O-Train Line 1 will run as scheduled on Saturday May 25, from 6 am to 2 am. On Sunday May 26, O-Train Line 1 will open at 5 am ahead of the 7 am start of the marathon.

If travelling from outside the downtown core, there are many Park & Ride lots(link is external) across Ottawa that offer free parking for attendees using transit. Paying your fare is easy and convenient with O-Payment. All fare readers on buses and fare gates at O-Train Line 1 stations accept credit card and mobile wallet options such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Race participants can also take advantage of free OC Transpo service on May 24 and 25 when traveling to pick up race kits at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend Health and Fitness Expo being held at Aberdeen Pavilion in Lansdowne Park.

To plan your trip in advance, visit octranspo.com(link is external). You can also connect with OC Transpo through Facebook(link is external), X (formerly Twitter)(link is external) and Instagram(link is external) for the latest service updates on this year’s event.
