38 Highland Creek Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 I noticed the TR's lights dim frequently. Most times going over section gaps, others from what seems to be load from the AC. Do all cars experience this? No, 'cuz they're not DC-powered like the Gloucesters from when Toronto had it's first subway trains.
D. DeLarge Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 I almost forgot, 5392-5395 were sitting at Wilson last week with BBD end caps, 5391/5396 MIA. Have they been sitting like this for a while?

38 Highland Creek Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 While I was riding the 545x train, I heard a lot of beeping coming from inside 5451's cab, but the only red light flashing on the panel was "SCS Bypass". There was nothing wrong with the train, so nobody panicked.
TTC12 Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 I've too heard the beeps coming from the cab, but there are two different types of common beeps I've heard. Most of the time it's the new "ringtone" of the phone/radio(?). the second type of beep is less common but nothing seems to happen . . .
Buurin Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 5491-5496 is in service now. Yes, I rode that to Eglinton that day, then rode 5401 for the return trip.
Buurin Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 I know this won't happen for a long time, but is it technically possible to shorten a TR train to 4 cars and run it on Sheppard line?

Sutharsan Posted December 17, 2011 Report Posted December 17, 2011 I saw the complete set of TR 5501-5506 was training when I passed by Wilson bus garage this evening around 7pm.
vivablue5215 Posted December 17, 2011 Report Posted December 17, 2011 Today: 544x on 109 run, 545x on an unknown run. 550x training, with the floor still half-wooden.
Orion9131 Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 I witnessed one car being trucked into Wilson Yard today at around 3:30.
Turtle Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 QUOTE (Buurin @ Dec 15 2011, 09:39 PM) I know this won't happen for a long time, but is it technically possible to shorten a TR train to 4 cars and run it on Sheppard line? It seems as if it is possible, yes. Dan What would you do with the left over cars? Wouldn't it be easier to lengthen the Sheppard platforms to 500ft instead of shortening the TR's to ~300ft?
D. DeLarge Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 What would you do with the left over cars? Wouldn't it be easier to lengthen the Sheppard platforms to 500ft instead of shortening the TR's to ~300ft? The TTC could always order more "A" cars to make more smaller sets. But it's probably cheaper to shorten the trains than to lengthen all the platforms (even though the stations were designed for future expansion). Throw in the fact that demand doesn't warrant running 6 car trains, and you get the idea...

I'm thinking it would cost considerably less to pull 2 cars out of the trains (considering this will be after they retire the T's which is probably 15-20 years away) or even order then T1 replacements with a 4 car variant if Sheppard is still the 'stubway' that it is now... then it would to knock out the temp walls, put down terrazzo, tile walls, wire new lighting, put in the yellow platform edge, mount luxalon and the countless other tasks associated with upgrading Sheppard to take 6 car trains. It all depends on the costs, ridership, the equipment and the politics. Its pointless at this stage to try and guess what will happen years from now.

Extra A cars would probably cost about $1.5 to $2 million each. You would have to split up two 6-car TR's to get four 4-car TR's, with $8 million worth of new A cars, before you even get into reprogramming the TR's systems to allow that. I don't remember the difference between the C cars and B cars, other than C has a horn. It may not even be possible because of this (A-B-B-C-B-A). Don't forget spare equipment for breakdowns. The only real benefit to running a whole line exclusively TR is going to be because of ato. You get increased passenger capacity per train and increased train capacity on the line. With Sheppard, if you need to move more people immediately, you just have to add more trains. Right now they are running about 6 minute headways, so there is room for more even before you talk about tearing down walls or changing the type of train. Plus, the TR's are slow uphill. Sheppard is all hill going westbound.

You would have to split up two 6-car TR's to get four 4-car TR's, with $8 million worth of new A cars, before you even get into reprogramming the TR's systems to allow that. How do you know exactly how much one car costs? I mean sure, A cars would be more expensive just because of the extra cab components, but I doubt they would be extremely more overpriced than a normal B or C car. I don't remember the difference between the C cars and B cars, other than C has a horn. A cars have cabs. B cars have another type of component (compressor?) that is required to be in ever second car. C cars basically don't have either... and they certainly do not have the horn in the middle of a set. It may not even be possible because of this (A-B-B-C-B-A). Don't forget spare equipment for breakdowns. The only real benefit to running a whole line exclusively TR is going to be because of ato. I think the TTC would rather expand the Sheppard line to 6-car trains before adding additional trains, simply for standardization of equipment. They don't need to worry about this for another 15 years though until the T1 cars are due to retire.
vivablue5215 Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 Plus, the TR's are slow uphill. Sheppard is all hill going westbound. You mean eastbound? Because I know as a fact Don Mills to Leslie is all downhill.

C cars (the fourth car) have a horn. B cars have air compressors, while C cars don't. And yes, I was aware that having a cab is what made the A cars special. You mean eastbound? Because I know as a fact Don Mills to Leslie is all downhill. Yes, Don Mills westbound is downhill to Leslie, but from Leslie to Bayview westbound (which is most of the trip westbound) it's all uphill and pretty steep.

But Given that if you are traveling in the opposite direction, you wont hear the horn from the 4th car if the one on the lead is not working...
TTC7595 Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 5501-5506 is now in service. Didn't catch run number
rocketdriver2019 Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 5501-5506 is now in service. Didn't catch run number Yeah it's been in service since the weekend.

Hahah, It stopped working at Spadina. Not that it matters to me, I don't need the train to tell me where to get off. :-P
