These two photos showing old bus stops in the Baseline/Clyde area were posted in the Facebook album Older pictures of Merivale Road in Nepean Dave asked me to check and were taken in the mid- to late 1980s.  I noticed that the 177 stop on Clyde Avenue has both a 560 number on it and an orange Sunday service band at the top.  That would put its installation at 1982 at the latest, but route 177 didn't start operating until 1985--it had previously been route 96, then 134.  Of course, it wasn't unheard of back then for OC Transpo to cover up the old route number with a new number sticker.  The other stop with routes 55, 117, 118 and 151 on it is on Baseline Road with Laurentian High School in the background.

Judging by the photo. It was taken when both Canadian tire occupied the now defunct Value Village and before the remaining part of 1370 Clyde plaza was completed.

Here's a st view of the same spot.

This photo might pinpoint the time frame ? (When did Octranspo get what looks like a 30'' Orion 1's?)

Eastman Colour, Clyde and Merivale. looks like the breaker mall had been built, but the other blocks still had converted houses. With Hertz Car Sales and SCUBA Consultants among the businesses. Mr. Lube had opened, Gas was 43.2 cents and the 177 bus was made by ORION.

OC Transpo got their first 30' Orion buses in 1978 and the ran until about 1993, so that's not very precise.  A better clue is route 177, which ran along Clyde Avenue between 1985 and 1989. :)

in any case, I looked at all of the photos in that Facebook album and they seem to cover several years from the mid- to late 1980s.

That sounds about right as he has pictures of the Woodroffe (Now Baseline ) Stn being built along with what I believe to be Queensway Stn being built in a 1984 album ?

Some old OTC & OC Transpo bus shots.

Photo's via Google search used without permission. photo's credit on  copy right  on photo.

Note 6006 IS NOT a OC Transpo original bus. Its an ex-TTC bus, not sure of the TTC original bus #. OC bought 12 from the TTC in 1980, when OC first got their first double rear doors. I can still remember   people jumping up and down on the 8001-80?? as they where push doors, while the ex-TTC where automatic with the floor plate senors. Some thought both where auto doors.

Also notice the red stripe on 6112 is different then the red stripe  on the other OTC GM New Looks 6568, 6684, 6833?

I've seen all of these photos before except for this one of 6835 stuck in the middle of the Queensway.  I'm having a hard time dating the photo, but the priority seating stickers in the window mean it's at least 1980, and the Dodge Omni behind the van in the foreground mean it's at least 1979.  In addition, all of the buses in the photo appear to be Fishbowls, and the ones I can see better have two-digit rollsigns.  It's also appears to be before the Queensway was widened to eight lanes in the mid-1980s.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that the photo appears to have been taken from the Woodroffe Avenue overpass, looking east toward Maitland Avenue.  The sound barriers on the left side, what appears to be a school play structure on the right side, and the curve to the left on the background point me toward this location.  Also, the car with the Canada flag front plate seems to be trying to merge with traffic as the lane peels off to the left at an apparent exit.  One this is clear, though: rush-hour traffic certainly hasn't improved over the last 35 years, even with a wider highway!

BTW, the photo of 337 is one of mine.  Yes, you may use it. :)

337 was put on display again the following year at the next Open Doors Ottawa function.  This photo was taken behind the St. Laurent garage on June 4, 2005.

  • First-gen New Looks like 6112 had a protruding trim strip that most systems left unpainted.
  • OC first got 6001/2 for parts, but found them serviceable and bought 10 more. Their number rollers were taken from retired 5105s and scrolled horizontally instead of vertically.

Here is a photo of 8420 sitting at a garage on October 2, 1986:

That's the St. Laurent garage before its expansion in the late 1980s.

Here's a promotional photo of 6331 in front of the St. Laurent garage in the early 1960s:

1987 OC GM Classic 8782 back in August 1987 (Photo by mbernero)

OC Transpo 8782 8-1987 unk photographer

This photo confirms that the 1987 Classics did not come with the "CLASSIC" emblem below the left headlight but rather those GM emblems above the OC Transpo logo. The prior 1984 and 1985 orders came with the "CLASSIC" emblem below the left headlight.

I've always preferred the Classics without any logos on the front; they just look cleaner that way.

Here is a photo of 8411 back in 1986 doing a 5 Downtown.

One thing I notice about this bus is that there is a silver thing above the ad rack.

Could just be a "front boarding only" sticker just placed way too far to the right.

I don't think so, it's just blank. Fishbowls also came with this, interestingly enough.

I think they repainted the fishbowls and 84xx Classics later on and that got painted over in the process. 85xx and 87xx Classics didn't come with this silver piece unpainted. Instead, there's a slightly darker shade of red where the silver piece used to be if you look closely.

Here's another interesting thing: This photo was taken before the GM Classics got retrofitted with the rear lights similar to those on Orion Vs. 8411 in that photo doesn't seem to have a light at the rear.

AFAIK, it's an air vent used in the A/C system, and it was first used on factory-equipped air-conditioned GM Old Looks in 1958.  It looks as if all 35' and 40' GM New Looks had the vent, whether A/C-equipped or not, and it was carried over to the Classics. Can anyone confirm this?

The vent is clearly visible in this photo of Fifth Avenue Coach Lines 3100:
