The North American Bus Industries 416 (also known as 40-SFW) was a 40-foot high floor transit bus. The 416 was launched by Ikarus USA in 1989. Ikarus USA became American Ikarus in 1992 and then North American Bus Industries in 1997. With the completion of New Jersey's order and no other orders, the 416 was discontinued. In March 2014, NABI had removed the 416 from their list of offerings.

Official production by Ikarus USA started in 1989. Ikarus USA became American Ikarus in 1992 and then North American Bus Industries in 1997. With the completion of New Jersey's order and no other orders, the 416 was discontinued. In March 2014, NABI removed the 416 from their list of offerings.

The 416 is an American derivative of the 415, a standard transit bus produced by Ikarus in Hungary. The 416 most closely resembles the 415, however the 416 is longer and has a different drivetrain configuration. The rear fascia of the 416 has provisions for an HVAC unit or a rear window.

The prototype 416 was built in 1986 and demoed in Budapest, Hungary. It is unknown whether it demoed in the United States.

The 416 uses a steel structure that is phosphate coated to protect from corrosion. Wheel housings, stairwells, main electrical compartment and battery compartment are stainless steel. Body panels and access doors are either sheet metal or fiber reinforced polymer.
The 416 uses a steel structure that is phosphate coated to protect from corrosion. Wheel housings, stairwells, main electrical compartment and battery compartment are stainless steel. Body panels and access doors are either sheet metal or fiber reinforced polymer. The bus is available with a choice of wide or narrow doors.

In 2008, NABI introduced a redesigned 416 with a sleek curved front. The rectangular headlights were replaced with recessed, round headlights in a bezel that followed the curvature of the A-pillar. Its appearance is similar to the second generation 40-LFW. The rear of the 416 was redesigned to accommodate a high mounted radiator and charge air cooler as specified by New Jersey Transit, who first received the redesigned model.

The rear of the 416 was redesigned to accommodate a high mounted radiator and charge air cooler as specified by New Jersey Transit, which was the only agency to receive the redesigned model.

NABI 416 Front View (2007-2014)

The North American Bus Industries 416 (also known as 40-SFW) was a 40-foot high floor transit bus. The 416 was introduced by Ikarus in 1986.

Design

The 416 is an American derivative of the 415, a standard transit bus produced by Ikarus in Hungary. The 416 most closely resembles the 415, however the 416 is longer and has a different drivetrain configuration. The rear fascia of the 416 has provisions for an HVAC unit or a rear window.

In 2007, NABI introduced a redesigned 416 with a sleek curved front. The rectangular headlights were replaced with recessed, round headlights in a bezel that followed the curvature of the A-pillar. Its appearance was similar to the second generation 40-LFW. The rear of the 416 was redesigned to accommodate a high mounted radiator and charge air cooler as specified by New Jersey Transit, which was the only agency to receive the redesigned model.
