Line 11 Vaudreuil-Hudson is a commuter rail line operated by Réseau de transport métropolitain in the Greater Montreal, QC area.
Details
Line 11 primarily operates between Gare Vaudreuil and Gare Lucien-L'Allier in downtown Montréal. Three trains per day originate or end at Gare Hudson, instead of Vaudreuil. Trains operate over the CP Westmount and Vaudreuil subdivisions, and the exo M&O subdivision.[1]
Service is provided seven days a week. Most departures occur during weekday rush hours; one trainset provides limited frequency during weekday middays and weekends, with a single round-trip on evenings. Trains are operated by diesel locomotives (either Bombardier ALP-45DP or GMDD F59PHI) using 5 to 7 car consists of Bombardier MultiLevel double-deck coaches. Consists are stored overnight at the Vaudreuil yard (west of Gare Vaudreuil), while heavy maintenance and daytime storage takes place at Lachine Maintenance Centre.[2]
History
The line dates to 1887, when Canadian Pacific Railway began operating commuter trains on the "CP Lakeshore West" line, connecting Rigaud and Montréal Windsor station. Competitor Canadian National Railway also operated a "CN Lakeshore West" service to Vaudreuil along its own trackage to Montréal's Gare Central, until the service was discontinued in 1960.
In 1982, operation of the line was passed to the Commission de transport de la Communauté Urbaine de Montréal (CTCUM); at the time, the Vaudreuil-Rigaud line and CN's Deux-Montagnes line were the only remaining commuter rail operations left in the Montréal area.[3] CP continued to provide train crews and maintenance operations. In 1985, the CTCUM became the Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM). The current stations were largely built or renovated during the 1980s.
In 1995, the newly created Agence Métropolitaine de Transport took over ownership of the line from STCUM. Service to Rigaud was discontinued in 2010, with trains only operating as far as Hudson.
The AMT was abolished in June 2017 and was replaced by the Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM). Shortly after, in July, Bombardier Transport took over the operation and maintenance of all commuter trains. The Vaudreuil-Hudson line was rebranded as "exo1 - Vaudreuil-Hudson line" upon introduction of the exo branding in 2018. The number was adjusted again in 2023 to "Line 11 Vaudreuil-Hudson". A new simplified region-wide fare zone was introduced in July 2024, which replaced the older fare zones (1 through 8); Line 11 is now within zones A and C.
