Line 12 Saint-Jérôme is a commuter rail line operated by Réseau de transport métropolitain in the Greater Montreal, QC area.
Details
Line 12 operates between Gare Saint-Jérôme and Gare Lucien-L'Allier in downtown Montréal. Trains operate over the CP Westmount, Adirondack, and Parc subdivisions, and the exo Parc subdivision.
Service is provided seven days a week. Most departures occur during weekday rush hours; one trainset provides limited frequency over part of the line on weekday middays and weekends, while two trainsets provide service over the full line on weekday evenings. Trains typically only operate to Lucien-L'Allier during peak periods and weekday evenings; during weekday middays, trains terminate at Gare Parc, while on weekends they terminate at Gare De la Concorde, both of which are connected to Métro stations. Trains are operated by diesel locomotives (either Bombardier ALP-45DP, GMDD F59PHI, or Siemens Charger) using 7 to 8 car consists of Bombardier BiLevel or CRRC Bilevel coaches. Consists are stored overnight at the Saint-Antoine yard (southeast of Gare Saint-Jérôme), while heavy maintenance and daytime storage takes place at Lachine Maintenance Centre.
History
CP previously operated commuter service on the line as far as Sainte-Thérèse, using RDC cars; this service was discontinued by 1979.
In July 1997, Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) introduced a temporary commuter service along the corridor between Blainville and Jean-Talon (now Parc) stations, to mitigate traffic issues caused by construction on the Marius Dufresne Bridge. The temporary nature of the service was evident through the construction of stations, using wooden station platforms, gravel parking lots, and limited passenger amenities. Despite only offering an initial 3 round-trip departures using a single consist, ridership was successful enough to warrant introduction of a second train consist (doubling departures to 6 round-trips) by September 1997. The service was quickly decided to become permanent, and new stations were added at Sainte-Rose, Henri-Bourassa (Bois-de-Boulogne) and Rosemère.
Initially, connections to downtown Montréal were provided via connection to the Métro or STM train-bus route 935. Partially owing to a bus shortage in 1999, AMT extended trains to Gare Windsor in downtown Montréal.
New Bombardier BiLevel coaches were introduced to the line in 2004. The line was extended from Blainville to Saint-Jérôme in 2007.
The AMT was abolished in June 2017 and was replaced by the Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM). Shortly after, in July, Bombardier Transport took over the operation and maintenance of all commuter trains. The Saint-Jérôme line was rebranded as "exo2 - Saint-Jérôme line" upon introduction of the exo branding in 2018. The number was adjusted again in 2023 to "Line 12 Saint-Jérôme". A new simplified region-wide fare zone was introduced in July 2024, which replaced the older fare zones (1 through 7); Line 12 is now within zones A, B, and C.
