Regional Transportation District
The Regional Transportation District is the transportation agency serving Denver, Colorado and surrounding areas. Service is provided in Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, and Jefferson Counties, as well as portions of Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, and Weld Counties.
Timeline
- Incorporated in 1969 by the Colorado General Assembly
- Acquired bankrupt Denver Metro Transit in January 1974 and operated the service as 'DMT by RTD' until full integration occurred in September 1974
- Longmont Mini Transit was purchased in July 1974
- Englewood-Littleton-Ft. Logan Bus Line was purchased in November 1974
- Northglenn Suburban Bus Co. was purchased in December 1974
- Evergreen Transit was purchased in March 1975
- Denver-Boulder Bus Company was purchased in June 1975 and began operating under RTD branding in January 1976
- Boulder Public Services Co. was purchased in late 1975 and began operating under RTD branding in January 1976
- Platte Division opens June 2, 1977
- 16th Street Free MallRide began operating in October 1982
- Market Street and Civic Center Stations opened in 1983 and 1984 respectively
- Downtown Express Busway (later HOV lanes by 1996) opened in September 1994
- Metro Area Connection (Central Corridor) Light Rail Line began operating on October 7th, 1994
- Southwest Corridor Light Rail Line began operating on July 14th, 2000
- Central Platte Valley Light Rail Line began operating on April 5th, 2002. Introduction of separate C Line and D Line designations
- Southeast Corridor Light Rail Line began operating on November 17th, 2006
- West Corridor Light Rail Line began operating on April 26th, 2013
- Free MetroRide began operating on May 12th, 2014
- Flatiron Flyer Bus Rapid Transit service began operating on January 2nd, 2016
- East Corridor Commuter Rail Line began operating on April 22nd, 2016
- Northwest Corridor Commuter Rail Line began operating on July 25th, 2016
- I-225 Corridor Light Rail Line began operating on 2 February 24th, 2017
- D Line service to 30th Avenue curtailed to 18th Street and replaced by L Line (109L) which began operating on January 14th, 2018
- Gold Line (Commuter Rail) began operating on April 26th, 2019
- North Metro Commuter Rail Line began operating on September 20th, 2020
- 16th Street Free MallRide renamed to 16th Street FreeRide in May 2025
Routes
Bus Routes

Commuter Rail
The A, B, and G lines are operated by Denver Transit Operators (DTO) from the Commuter Rail Maintenence Facility (CRMF). The N line is operated by the Regional Transportation District using the CRMF for maintenance and storage and the 711 call center for operations.
- A Line: 111A - Denver International Airport to Union Station (opened April 2016; previously branded as University of Colorado A Line)
- B Line: 113B - Westminster to Union Station (opened July 2016)
- G Line: 113G - Wheat Ridge to Union Station (opened April 2019)
- N Line: 117N - Thornton (Eastlake/124th) to Union Station (opened September 2020)
Light Rail
Current
All Light Rail trains are operated by the Regional Transportation District using the Elati and Mariposa Maintenence facilities.
- D Line: 101D - Littleton/Mineral to 18th/California (service between 18th Street and 30th Avenue replaced by the L Line in January 2018)
- E Line: 101E - Ridgegate Parkway to Union Station (extension from Lincoln to RidgeGate Parkway opened May 2019)
- H Line: 101H - Florida to 18th/California (extension from Nine Mile to Florida station opened February 2017)
- L Line: 109L - 16th/Stout to 30th/Downing
- R Line: 107R - Peoria to Lincoln (formerly operated to RidgeGate Parkway until January 2021)
- W Line: 103W - Jeffco Government Center/Golden to Union Station
