Chicago Transit Authority 700-701
Chicago Transit Authority 700-701 are 2013 New Flyer XE40 buses built in 2014. These buses are used exclusively on route 79.
They are the first Xcelsior vehicles purchased by the CTA. These buses were purchased for a total of $2.5 million from the Federal Transit Administration’s Transportation Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) II and Clean Fuels grant programs, and a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.[1] Both buses were delivered to CTA on June 2014 and entered service on October 29th of the same year.
As built, 700 and 701 used plug-in, slow charging at the garage. It took about three to five hours to fully recharge the buses. The two buses were returned to New Flyer in 2018 and were converted to allow for overhead rapid enroute charging. They returned to service in 2019. They have since been parked out of service since 2021.
