Does anyone know of a website that does free Canadian license plate and vin lookups?

Unfortunately, not Canadian license plates.  VINs are universal so if you search "vin reversal search" or something like that you should find plenty of sites that you can use.

It is now possible to obtain VINs from Canadian license plates using Carfax Car Care.

You will have to register an account but it's completely free. I used it to successfully grab the VINs for some newer TransLink shuttles.

Update: use sparingly or upgrade to a paid commercial account unless you want to get banned for "commercial activity" on a free account. See further down for more information

Thank you very much!  I will try this out for myself.

UPDATE: I have tried the tool on various BC, Ontario and Saskatchewan plates with some success.  However, no AB plates I type into the tool work at all, even plates on plates that I know are still active (such as my family's vehicles.)  Strange.

It does have its faults. For me it worked for some expired plates and ones that were on a vehicle that now has different plates; it didn't work for some that are active. I think it is dependent on shops/dealerships that record both the VIN and plate number of a vehicle in order to tie them together.

Update: only use it very sparingly; otherwise it will detect "commercial use" and effectively ban you from using the service unless you pay to upgrade to a commercial account. It's telling me to remove some of the buses I looked up but it won't actually let me do anything unless I upgrade because I was flagged as a commercial user.

Dispatch Control has now added Canadian plate lookups. I tried them out with some newer Canadian buses, hasn't brought back anything yet. That gives some hope.

Interesting.

So far this has been a good website. The USDOT reports heavily remind me of another website I once used a lot, Quicktransportsolutions. Good info, plates & VINs too.

Here's nearly a perfect replacement for how Vehiclehistory.com was from Feb. to June 2019 with the free NMVTIS reports. This site charges for them, but it's a flat subscription rate per month or per 3 months with unlimited reports! It's extremely affordable and fair. I tried it myself and I love it. Unfortunately you cannot get a VIN from a plate here (the only downfall). Give it a try and find more info on all of these bus VINs. Find out whether stuff went out of state or went to scrap.

2 extremely useful links for bus registration & disposition info:

https://www.bumper.com/ -> Official NMVTIS data. License plate option, but can't get a VIN from plates. Standard VINs only (no serials or weird check digits/typos). Affordable subscription fee.

- Removed the autocheck info link. PM me for the details. It also is currently down.

Is there any way from this to get specifically where it went? I can see what state certain units went to but not which company. I was hoping not to have to use the state listed as a clue and try to get the information from the DMV of that state if they’ll even give it.

It is not possible with NMVTIS. With Autocheck.com's VIN reports, I was able to get the city and state, which definitely makes it easier to pinpoint certain operators, organizations and owners (especially Transit Sales International). It is not legal for NMVTIS, Autocheck, Carfax etc. to give out names of owners/companies. You can try to ask the DMV, but I'm not sure how well that will go. In my case, I had prior knowledge from past research and I combine that research with new found info. I can also pinpoint where certain things went depending on the scrap yard as well. So far the only website I've seen that actually has names is specially for Ohio registered vehicles. This was the most recent link I've used, but is seems to have been taken down: https://bmvonline.dps.ohio.gov/Search/VinSearch This was the previous link, but even that one doesn't go to the new link anymore either: https://services.dps.ohio.gov/BMVOnlineServices/Search/Title I wrote down some company names on pages such as these: https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Western_Reserve_Transit_Authority_8801-8837 & https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Allen_County_Regional_Transit_Authority_26-30

EDIT: This is the new link that seems to work now: https://bmvonline.dps.ohio.gov/bmvonline/search/title

I found this for American and Canadian license plates:

https://licenseplatedata.com/

This site used to have Canadian plates (IIRC it was the one I used to look up an Ontario plate back in late September), but now only has listings for US states.

Anyone have a good site to use for both Canadian and American sites?

I find the CarFax Car Care mobile app is usually the most reliable.  I think some Canadian provinces flat out don't let you find the information by entering a licence plate.  I've even tried entering Alberta plates from family member's vehicles in Alberta that I know are valid and it doesn't work at all.  BC, Ontario work (and I believe Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan), thankfully and I have been successful gathering VINs from licence plates from those provinces.

Unfortunately none.  And trust me, I've tried searching for one that works in Alberta for years with no luck!

Thanks, I'll take a look! I have a large batch of plates to run (a few hundred) from a trip earlier this summer, trying to weigh out my alternatives...
