The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority or WMATA operates transit service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which also includes parts of Maryland and Virginia.

History

WMATA was formed in 1967 to plan, develop, and operate public transportation in the Washington, DC, metro area. It began bus operations in 1973.

Divisions

There are 9 divisions in the Metrobus system.

Bladensburg: The largest garage in the system located in Washington DC, also is a CNG bus facility.

Four Mile Run: This garage has a fleet of only Orion VII CNG located in Northern VA

Landover: This garage is based in MD and is a diesel only garage with hybrid's,and no artics.

Montgomery This division is located in MD and serves Montgomery county and Bowie. This garage has a fleet of diesels,hybrids,and artics.

Northern: This division is located in Washington DC and has a fleet of diesels,hybrids and artics.

Southern Avenue Annex: This division is based in the border line of Washington DC and MD and has a fleet of diesels.

Western: This division is located in Washington DC and has a fleet of diesels and hybrids.

West Ox: This division is located in VA replaced the Arlington division, and is also the newest garage in the system.

Royal Street: This division is located in VA and has a fleet of only diesels.

DC Circulator

DC Circulator is a downtown circulator bus system in Washington, D.C. operated by First Transit. It is owned by a public-private partnership by DC Department of Transit, WMATA, and DC Surface Transit.
