306 Carlton
My mom has a 2004 Civic 4 door and its pretty good. Took it to Halifax from Ottawa this past summer and it did fine other than some of the larger hills out east Got about 54XXXkm on it now. My grandmother recently bought a 2009 Civic after the tranny gave out on her old accord. Apparently she loves it but is taking time getting used to the gauge cluster Haven't been in one yet though. Is it just me or has anybody else seeing any resemblance here?

Board Admin A. Wong Posted January 9, 2009 Board Admin Report Share Posted January 9, 2009 Is it just me or has anybody else seeing any resemblance here? You think that's bad? Acura TSX Kia Magentis / Optima Why Dodge of all companies? Of the domestics, I think they've got the poorest quality. (And lousy seats too)Are you looking for a minivan, or would a Sedan be fine too? If you're looking at a minivan, don't go domestic: Ford's electrical likes to catch fire (and tranny problems), Chevrolets did poorly in frontal crash tests until the 2006 U-bodies. Our van is pretty reliable, it just has its quirks now which seem to be worsening. Don't get me wrong, it's still driveable and runs alright, but it's time to start looking for a replacement. I am fine driving it, but it starts to get irritating and worrisome after a jaunt when the oil light comes on and the warning chime starts going off. It does remind me of New Flyer buses slowing down and having the RETARDER ON light come on though. (The light usually goes off when the RPMs are higher, but sometimes it persists) It would have to be a minivan as we cart around family sometimes. We are not even looking at Windstars/Freestars, and I hate the new Uplanders. I don't mind the Dodges, and as I said our van currently was/is still reliable after 250,000+km so there is some reputation in my mind.Japanese and German are too expensive. I think going through another minivan is fine, and we might be able to downsize. Rust is going to be inevitable, as it will be stored outside. My current van is rusting, though it has been stored in a garage for most of its life (until 2006).
6688
BTW, what do you guys think of the new Civics? I have rode is quite a few Civics in my life. One of my uncle's had a 1999 Civic, my other uncle had a 2001 and right now one of my friends at school has a 2006 Civic. It looks way better than the 2001-2005 design, I was never that big of a fan of that look but the 2006-present design looks very nice. The only problem that I have with the Civics is that the back seating is not that big and cannot fit 3 people very comfortably, although I guess if you wanted a Honda sedan that fits 3 people comfortably in the back you'd have to go for the higher priced Accord. The current generation of Civics I find are the absolute best. They look good, I love the electronic speedo, guages, etc, and they drive wonderfully. They have plenty of passing power, are quite peppy, and are really good on gas, even when driven to the floor the way I do. The small steering wheel is just the right size (go figure the Fit has the bigger wheel!) It handles as close to a sports car as you can get for a compact. The resale value on them is also quite high, which is typical for Honda. There are many things I really like about this generation of Civics, but I will stop short for now, otherwise, you'd probably stop reading it due to length... Overall, it's currently my favourite compact to drive. Try getting 3 people in the back seat of a 4 door Golf! It's doable (hehehe), but VERY cramped for whoever has to suffer in the back! Those Civics unfortunately have poor quality exhaust components and break/rot. mtltransitguy's dad has one and at 6000km, the exhaust is already needing work. Many Civics of this gen have this problem, but not the Acura CSX. I drove a 2002 and a 2008. I like teh older one for better quality interior and for its simple design. 2008 drives nice but that digital dash can get annoying at times. First Civic we had was a 1994 and it lasted up until 2004. It died because it got to the point where the repairs were going to cost more than it was worth so we just ran it until it died. In late 2003 we bough our 2004 Civic and its had no problems yet. The only problem we have experienced was a pebble or something getting stuck in between the caliber and the rotor as we were pulling off the highway to a rest stop. Thankfully we manged to get it out and continued home. Also the battery was starting to die so I replaced that no problem and its fine now other than the fact I need to find that damn radio code to get that working again... M.Wright
No, the starter just clicked. It's happened before when it got that chilly.Anyway, I drove it around town today - on the way down to my destination it did start with the oil light and chiming again. However, after taking photos and driving back home, everything was fine and how it should be! Sounds to me like it's home sick lol

I don't know if other companies offer this, but my friend got his with the stereo controls on his steering wheel which I found to be a pretty cool, that way your hands won't leave the steering wheel. Speaking of the Fit, what do you guys think of that. I rode in one for a couple minutes and I never thought much of it, probably because the ride wasn't that long. It felt almost crammed in the back and there was only one other person with me . I prefer the Civic over it for sure. Overall, I like Hondas since I grew up riding in quite a few different ones from a 1989 Accord to a 2006 Civic. When I go shop for my first car one day I plan for it to be a Honda, preferably an Accord but I wouldn't mind a Civic.
Board Admin A. Wong Posted January 10, 2009 Board Admin Report Share Posted January 10, 2009 I don't find the Fit to be too squished. This was the first generation model though, and the person in the front was short.

It felt almost crammed in the back and there was only one other person with me . I prefer the Civic over it for sure. The Fit isn't a bad little car. The main selling point on this car is cargo space. Being a hatchback, it inherently will already have more cargo space. The rear seats fold all the way down, similar to the Caravan Stow-n-Go seats. It's because they moved the gas tank to below the front passenger seat, that they were able to do that. The Fit also drives nicely, but lacks power. It's excellent on gas. The instrument panel and center console leave much to the imagination I find. It does have more cupholders than almost any car I've driven, being 2 up front, 1 in the center console for the rear, and 1 in each of the rear doors (2) for a total of 5. Of course, cupholders not being the make-or-break decision  ... It does seem well built as well, and handles pretty good on the highway. Although it does have a slight swaying at highway speed. The one major problem with the car is price. Even trying to find a used one at this point is quite difficult, looking on autotrader.ca I have yet to yield more than 2 results, ever. But even for the high price, they are well equipped. If you're looking for a small car that is exceptional on gas, the Fit is GO. Otherwise, stick with the Civic or Accord. Also new for 2008 with the Civic was the Si trim for the 4 door sedan, previously only available on the 2 door coupe. The Si is by far the nicest trim, but I still have yet to see a 4 door with it.. Double T
I have some big plans for my little escort wagon. Since i work in a junkyard i get used parts at a discount, so far i have a cold air intake, & a performance muffler. I plan on getting a tie bar, performance plugs & wires, custom wheels, high flow header, & a 'hot' cam kit. Interior upgrades are going to be kept to a minimum, CD player, & a tach. I may upgrade the headlights to xenons but i havent decided yet
wil9402
This is a bit off topic, but has anyone here ever used a cassette adapter in their/a car's cassette player so that they can play music off of their mp3 player? When I found out about them I thought it was a great invention. It is great for those on a budget you can't afford to install a new system into their car. When I found out about them I thought it was a great invention. It is great for those on a budget you can't afford to install a new system into their car. That's what I did for my first car... a 1989 Pontiac Sunbird with enough rust that you could stick your fingers straight through the door to unlock it! Best 600$ i ever spent (that includes registration and the ticket I got for failing to lock your doors), even if it only lasted 7 months before the tranny died. I have a 2002 Ford Focus Wagon now... very practical for schlepping the kids stuff, but a bit thirsty for city driving, and the fancy independent rear suspension has cost me some money. Great handling, no other complaints or problems that weren't caused by my own foolishness. Has anybody else gotten any WTF traffic tickets? Like getting a ticket for not locking your doors when the locks are obviously broken? Mike

2-8-2 Mike
I didn't even know you could get ticketed for not locking your doors... I live in the province of Quebec. 80-040_Guy-Concordia
I didn't even know you could get ticketed for not locking your doors... It started in the Downtown Montreal area as a by-law to prevent people from leaving valuables in the car and leaving it unlocked. And you receive the ticket on the seat so you'll notice and prove it really was unlocked.

So far my mom's Civic has been fine as well as my dad's Jetta but both are garaged. My uncle though has had to have his car plugged in.
