Final comments:

Going through the flight itinerary, there is an option for flight change along with flight change plus refund along with bundles if bringing on additional checked bags or preferred seat selection. Which gives a bit of assurance which the ULCC (ultra low cost airlines) like Flair and Swoop don't provide refunds. Only a flight switch if paying the additional fee.

I have attached screenshots of what the options looked like for bundles and flight change or flight change and refund option for those interested.

For me, I am willing to pay for the ability of having no middle seat along with other amenities that Porter Airlines has created in their fleet of new jets.

Starting with two round trip departures at launch. Ramping up to three round trip departures on May 24th.

Especially with an order of up to 100 E195-E2, Porter is planning on getting a lot of usage out of them. The current base order is 50 currently.

Porter Airlines has recently announced plans to offer flights at (an unlikely but positive) new destination, Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU) in Montreal's South Shore. This is in addition to Montreal Trudeau Airport (YUL) However, it won't be until 2024 for the service to start at the Saint-Hubert airport.

Porter Airlines is planning to ramp up additional flight departures from Pearson effective June 1st and August 1st having ramped up frequency.

https://enjoy.flyporter.com/2023/flex-your-jet-set/index.html

With additional new destinations within Canada and US to be announced soon. I did read a rumour that there were plans to add these new destinations in late spring or early summer pending training of flight crew to handle longer haul flights along with equipment. Here is the list below:

Within Canada:

  • Regina (YQR)
  • Saskatoon (YXE)
  • St. John's (YYT)
  • Victoria (YYJ)
  • Winnipeg (YWG)

US destinations:

  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Las Vegas (LAS)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • Orlando (MCO)
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL)

Final comments:

I won't deny that Porter Airlines has evolved from operating their major hub at Toronto Island Airport with limited infrastructure and distance with turboprop aircraft. Especially when COVID-19 happened and flight operations being suspended for almost 18 months, I didn't think they would survive being out of business for that long and not providing service without any cash flow. Having to rely on the federal government for relief loans to stay afloat.

Plus figuring out a way to expand even if it meant having to fly out of Pearson Airport due to restrictions on the runway not being long enough for jets. With a strategy on how they will gain market share from the competition by offering a very different product compared to the major and ultra low cost carriers. Considering that running an airline isn't cheap having to build a clientele along with loss leader sales to build the market.

Looking forward to what Porter will bring to the market. Especially with the amount of Embraer E195-E2 have been ordered. 50 firm orders and an option for an additional 50.

That is a lot of financial risk.

Porter Airlines is adding Toronto to Winnipeg effective September 7th.

Two flights daily.

From Toronto:

  • 10:05 AM arriving at 11:41 AM
  • 3:50 PM arriving at 5:26 PM

From Winnipeg:

  • 12:30 PM arriving at 3:55 PM
  • 6:20 PM arriving at 9:45 PM

Already holding a huge loss leader sale on the basic fare at only $88 to $89 for the first few days of the new service. In exchange, no carry-on or electronic boarding pass.

Final comments:

Slowly introducing new routes and departures pending available equipment and training of flight crews.

Porter Airlines adding five Florida destinations noted below:

  • Tampa: November 1st
  • Fort Myers: November 10th
  • Orlando: November 21st
  • Fort Lauderdale: November 30th
  • Miami: December 12th

Flights to all five destinations will operate from Toronto Pearson Airport. Ottawa, it will only fly between Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.

Final comments:

Looks like the scheduling is that the flight from Florida departs in the morning to Toronto. Then back to Florida destination in the afternoon with the newer Embraer E195-E2.

For the flights to Ottawa, seems there is a bit more flexibility since both departures from Ottawa and Florida destinations are in the afternoon.

Expansion of other routes planned for 2024. Considering that Porter has been pushing a lot of expansion along with status matching with other airlines such as Air Canada and Westjet and converting to a similar tier with Porter VIP program. Especially reducing the minimum spend required to retain a loyalty account to $500/year.

I wouldn't mind taking Porter when expansion ramps up. Especially with how they do differentiate between the major airlines such as no middle seats and more flexible ticketing.

Another long-term goal for Porter Airlines - is to offer a "branded credit card" (either VISA or MasterCard) and to team up with either Neo or (to a lesser extent) Brim.

While the former (Neo) already has partnerships with Hudson's Bay, Tim Horton's and (most recently) Cathay Pacific, the latter (Brim) has partnered with other banks/airlines like Air France/KLM (for it's Canadian customers), CWB (Canadian Western Bank) and the LBC Bank (Laurentian Bank of Canada).

Only problem is, will a future credit card that Porter will provide one day - appeal to customers? We'll see.

To be honest, I think they could go with a major bank instead of Brim or Neo. I know Aeroplan is split between TD and CIBC while Westjet is with RBC.

Though, as you mentioned if it will appeal to customers. I think it will be interesting to see what kind of welcome bonuses are offered since I know Aeroplan has been offering a lot of big welcome bonuses to entice consumers to upgrade.

Platinum: $500 worth of welcome bonuses including first year waived. Visa Infinite offering $1,600 in welcome bonuses and Visa Infinite Privilege (the top tier one) is offering $3,100 in bonuses. Of course most of the welcome bonus is tied to spending a certain amount in a certain time period.

Airlines are trying to compete especially for the high net worth business traveller.

Porter Airlines has announced two new destinations from Pearson International Airport.

LAX (Los Angeles): January 16, 2024

  • Toronto Pearson to LAX: 10:30 AM arriving at 1:05 PM
  • LAX to Toronto Pearson: 2:45 PM arriving at 10:32 PM

SFO (San Fransisco): January 25, 2024

  • Toronto Pearson to SFO: 10:30 AM arriving at 1:22 PM
  • LAX to Toronto Pearson: 2:50 PM arriving at 10:46 PM

One flight per day in each direction.

Tickets are available to purchase. Just ensure you select a date after the inaugural date to get the pricing.

Final comments:

I won't deny there is already a lot of uptake for these two destinations especially when Westjet has suspended Toronto to Los Angeles slowly reducing the flights this month. Air Canada of course dominates with a lot more flights and clientele. Giving a lot more flexibility regarding travel departures versus Porter only operating one flight per day.

Effective February 14, 2024 or Valentine's Day, Porter will be operating one daily flight in each direction between Ottawa and Calgary.

From Calgary (YYC) to Ottawa (YOW)

  • Departing Calgary at 8:50 AM
  • Arriving in Ottawa at 2:40 PM

Ottawa (YOW) to Calgary (YYC)

  • Departing Ottawa at 6:20 PM
  • Arriving in Calgary at 8:49 PM

Final comments:

Air Canada did eliminate the Calgary to Ottawa route along with a few others due to resource limitations. Porter Airlines is simply testing out to see if there is any demand for the route along with operating routes out of their Ottawa hub. Working to build the market in stages especially with how many jets they are adding to their fleet.

Plus building up the flight crew to work for the longer haul flights and different setup.

Effective March 5th, Porter will be operating one round trip daily between Toronto and Las Vegas.

From Toronto:

  • Departing at 1 PM arriving in Las Vegas at 3:04 PM

From Las Vegas:

  • Departing at 4 PM arriving in Toronto at 11:16 PM

Final comments:

Porter is playing it very smart with an afternoon departure which only Flair Airlines operates on select days. Whereas Westjet is only operating mornings effective late October until late April and Air Canada operating both a morning and evening flight to the same destination.

Trying to not compete against the same time slots while working to build the demand.

I know I always wanted to take Porter Airlines to Las Vegas, but it will be another few months. Especially with the amount of competition between multiple airlines.

Porter Airlines is exercising the right to purchase 25 additional Embraer E195-E2 for a total of 75 firm orders. An option for 25 additional Embraer E195-E2 jets are still available at the volume price discount if Porter decides to exercise those options.

Right now, 24 Embraer E195-E2 jets have been delivered so far.

https://www.flyporter.com/en-ca/about-porter/media-centre/news-details?title=Porter+Airlines+Orders+25+Embraer+E195E2s+2023+11

Final comments:

Nice to see the positive experience and strong demand considering it is a risk for Porter Airlines to expand beyond Toronto Island Airport. At the same time, focusing more on being different from both the major and low cost airlines in Canada such as operating with a different kind of fleet along with redesigning the passenger experience. Versus trying to rush in with an expansion plan without differentiation other than maybe cost or loss leader fares.

The original order was 50 firm orders with an option for an additional 50 units at the volume discount price if demand warrants those extras.

Porter Airlines is adding three new destinations from Montreal effective Spring 2024 per this tweet attached:

Here are the exact dates of the new routes:

  • Montreal to Vancouver: April 11, 2024
  • Montreal to Edmonton: May 1, 2024
  • Montreal to Calgary: May 28, 2024

Final comments:

Porter is definitely putting the investment of new Embraer E195-E2 jets to pretty good use along with an aggressive expansion plan. All three new routes will be one trip in each direction with mornings from the west coast and evening departures from Montreal.

Montreal is being built as a new hub for Porter Airlines along with Ottawa.

This year has been more of a foundation since Porter worked on building their domestic network along with inaugural flights before expanding into Florida starting November 2023. This is along with offering discounts that include new routes when they start service or what I call loss leader fares along with marketing the differentiation from both the major and low cost airlines.

2024 will definitely cement that foundation even further with new additional routes to the US along with rolling out additional routes to Ottawa and Montreal hubs. I know I hope to take Porter Airlines for my next trip.

Porter is adding a flight between Toronto (YYZ) and Saskatoon (YXE) effective May 16th

Departing from Toronto at 2:30 PM arriving at 4:04 PM in Saskatoon.

Departing from Saskatoon at 4:55 PM arriving in Toronto at 10:09 PM.

Final comments:

This brings the flights from Porter to cover all 10 provinces in Canada. Especially with the marketing of no middle seat along with other amenities to differienate between the major and low cost airlines. Rather than just marketing flights between X and Y that may be covered by the major airlines, Porter Airlines focused more on why they are different from the competition. Being many years in the making to where they are today.

Porter Airlines is launching two seasonal destinations from Montreal.

Montreal to Los Angeles from June 27/24 to October 26/24 with 4x weekly.

  • PD667 Montreal 7:40 PM arriving in Los Angles at 10:36 PM
  • PD668: Los Angeles 6:15 AM arriving in Montreal at 2:40 PM

Montreal to San Francisco from June 28/24 to October 25/24 with 3x weekly

  • PD673: Montreal 8 PM arriving in San Francisco at 11:12 PM
  • PD674: San Francisco 6:15 AM arriving in Montreal at 2:40 PM

Montreal to San Francisco is the longest route on the Porter Airlines network.

Final comments:

Air Transat has vacated those two routes. Plus it is a good opportunity for Porter Airlines to test the market with a seasonal approach if there is demand. Especially with Montreal Trudeau Airport is dominated by Air Canada which is where their headquarters are.

Air Canada operates 3 flights daily from Montreal to Los Angeles at 8:05 AM, 4:40 PM and 6:20 PM.

Montreal to San Fransisco, one at 4:45 PM and 8 PM or 2 flights daily via Air Canada.
